    >Sonic 1
Green Hill. Should be pretty self-explanatory.

    >Sonic 2
I am fond of Chemical Plant because it feels like an active attempt at looking at Sonic 1 and figuring out what the appeal was. It's very big, slick, and there are lots of sloping environments. Yes, the rising chemical section is annoying, but it's a very solid level that sets the stage for the rest of the series. I also really like Casino Night because I think its unique style and originality truly solidifies the idea that it's a sequel. The whole game is good. Yes, even Metropolis has its place.

    >Sonic 3 and Knuckles
I'm not really sure what to say, because pretty much the whole game is solid.

the rising chemical section is also completely avoidable (in three different ways)

Top 3 are Hydrocity, Flying Battery, and Chemical Plant in no specific order

The rising chemical section is really easy if you don't do it the way you're supposed to. If you walk into the vertical corridor that you gotta climb just enough that the door doesn't close but the water starts rising, you can turn around and go a little to the left and once it's done rising you can spin dash and jump off one of the hills at the right angle. The water physics will carry you high enough that you'll jump out of the water and clear the annoying part where you have to wait for the platforms to hover across

    I concur with hydrocity/chemical plant.
They are basically the same level as said by the devs themselves.
The rest of 3&k is rock solid as well.

      >Mario invented giant mushroom landscapes
He can't even bounce on them most of the time, talk about lame

I don't think any of he Sonic levels are amazin to play on their on. Obviously Green hill for the first time is. But it's the pace of the levels and the way they compliment each other that makes them standout.

S going from Hill Top to Mystic Cave zone, or Chem plant to Aquatic Ruin, you go from overground to underground (obviously) and from an industrial poluted landscape to clear fresh water and leaves in Aquatic.

I think probably the best level sequence in this case is the opening of Sonic 3 all the way to Marble Garden where it gets repetitive. But Hydrocity is the most fun level, in terms of where it is amid others and if you were playing alone.

Knuckles Sky Sanctuary zone is great too as you rise through the level for a final fight with the fate of the island hanging in the balance.

      >Knuckles Sky Sanctuary zone is great too as you rise through the level
Knuckles' Sky Sanctuary is literally a three screen wide flat surface

You're correct, but I think he just meant Sonic & Knuckles's

I'm partial to the first five Zones of Sonic 2, so probably one of those. Chemical Plant I guess

I still find it weird that we have to clarify we're talking about "classic" Sonic to differentiate from all the other monsters that came after the 32-bit era.
Anyway, it's Spring Yard Zone and I'll accept no questions.

I don't know why they didn't do more things like the moving block activated by the switch in Spring Yard where you actually race something. The only other examples I recall are the beginning of Scrap Brain 3 which was a massive shortcut and the switches in Sandopolis and SA2's pyramid which were just mandatory competence checks.

    >Sonic 1
    Scrap Brain
    >Sonic 2
    Metropolis
    >Sonic 3&K
    Death Egg
    >Mania
    Studiopolis

I don't know what it is but seeing Robotnik's influence on full display was always captivating to me. Studiopolis beats out on the Titanic Monarch solely because the act 1 music is extremely good.
