Best controls and camera ever

Boy, do i sure love and enjoy pressing L1 every couple seconds. This was very innovative for the time; to actually being able to see where you’re fricking going by spamming L1 all the time. And the controls are so ahead of its time; you equip a weapon by pressing x, o, triangle or square and then u use the right analoooog to use the weapon! This is truly a brilliant idea because if you were to equip something like the fricking stun club with x then press x to attack with it, that would be convenient but we dont want any of that, so the x button becomes useless while the weapon is equipped. Truly an intelligent design in this game for both the camera and controls.

never played this game but repositioning the camera with l1 doesn't sound too different from manually repositioning it in a first-person shooter. swinging a melee weapon with the right stick sounds cool if it can influence the arc of the swipe. In any case this sounds like another person who can't appreciate a game's rules, many such cases on /vr/ these days

Really hate this shit as well. But there are even many PS2 games that don't have a Zelda-tier camera AI

      >there are even many PS2 games that don't have a Zelda-tier camera AI
There's tons of modern 3rd person games that don't have any form of automatic camera even today and you're expected to adjust the camera constantly

        literally perfection

Make no mistake - developers would have done the same back then had they figured out the tricks to making good camera controls.

I hate automatic cameras like this because they often use awkward angles which in turn requires of the player to use awkward angles angles on the analog stick. I'd rather set the camera myself, or have tank controls. and devs knew this or else they would have done this everywhere, note how you don't have this type of camera movement when there is combat.

the whole gimmick of the game was to utilize the right analog stick for fluid swinging motions. trying to use the stun without the analog stick sounds fricking HORRIBLE and while you are an idiot, at least you're playing a retro game so i can't entirely fault you.

Interestingly Skyward Sword HD adopted this control scheme and it makes the game 10x better than with motion controls. I respect Ape Escape now. It just needed a better automated camera.

    >finally make a controller with not one but TWO sticks
    >still do nothing but nonsense with it
what even was the first 3rd person game that had a proper camera control on right stick while moving with the left stick?

Mario 64 already had it conceptually, just clunky and with the C buttons instead of a stick. It's weird that developers always needed so long to agree on such obvious things

Third person is a bit tough, the biggest examples were all first person. I know Crash 3 uses it for aiming, Stuart Little II for camera, uhhh couldn't you use it in Tomb Raider games to look around? Those are the only non first person games I can think of with relation to the camera.

but either way, yeah, it wasn't used very often in the first generation which makes sense given it's timeline.

Some of the level design was made so you could always arrange the camera to stay behind you, that's much more from what I've seen from that gen

don't know what you all mfs are on but ape escape has great control once you take some minutes to get to know the layout

This game is way better than any platformer on the N64. Stop crying and learn good taste.

I am enjoying it so much but it would’ve been even better if the controls weren’t made by apes. Also yes N64 is garbage top to bottom and the PSX handed it its ass

It takes 2 minutes to get used to the controls and then what's left is a barebones af platformer. Whoever wrote this has motoric disabilities

        >barebones af
        lol

lmao, perchance. needing to do certain things for individual monkeys (due to various personalities) immediately invalidates whatever you said. compared to every other platformer in that gen it is a ton more involved.

You could press L2 and R2 to move the camera, left and right, you fricking moron. L1 was just a quick option, most action games have this option, unless it's a shooter.
