Plays more like a slow console shooter with arenas. But for a slow console shooter it ain't tactical nor engaging in any way. I kinda feel bad that it's not outright awful but it's just not fun.

the first episode has a lot of those needlessly large levels, but iirc things tighten up as the game goes on and you get more indoor environments to explore. it has been a while so maybe I'm misremembering; it could just be that it is that way and it just didn't bother me when I played it.
I also forgot to say but I really enjoyed that the basic mooks could be headshot for quick kills. It's minor but it added a lot to the basic combat loop for me.

Blood's length isn't nearly as long though. Blood keeps encounters feeling pretty fresh, or maybe that's just the result of having one of the best, most satisfying FPS arsenals of all time.

Ion Fury was my favorite among these retro revival shooters, but Zortch just mogs it hard, for starters, by having actual enemy variety. To me, it's like the best gameplay elements of Quake and Doom II combined.
Hated both Prodeus and Ion Fury. Prodeus has some of the blandest level design imaginable. It makes sense though since its pulling from DOOM 2016. Everything just looks the same. Super boring.
Ion Fury has the problem of the environments being so overly detailed and colorful that everything blends together, including the enemies. It doesn't help that a lot of enemies are kind of stagnant and don't seem to move a whole lot.
Anyone who hasn't yet should play HROT. One of the better shooters in recent years.
Cultic is also pretty good.

They're "beautiful" in the same sense Bob Ross knockoff paintings you can find in the home of just about any old person are. They're inoerfensive to the eyes and are generic rnough to where you can't recall any individual one's features. They're also nothing more than backdrops. The escher labs isn't just unique visually but also in terms of layout and traversing it. Ion Fury is nothing but a bunch of bland, featureless, loosely interconnected shooting galleries that could take place just about anywhere.

I can't really remember at this point, I tried several but bailed very quickly because I just couldn't get into any so the names faded quickly. One was called Proteus or something? Dusk is the only one I forced myself to stick to because it was shilled over and over again so I thought surely I'm missing something, but it's just bland weapons that don't feel fun to use and uninspired level design. The green glowy crossbow as the final weapon was just lol.
In comparison I still frick around in gzdoom with custom wads once or twice a year, replayed the original SShock 2 and even the ancient Red Faction (this one hasn't aged too well tho) and had fun in all of those.
I suppose it's just a (you) issue for me but boomer shooters just don't hit the spot for whatever reason
So it's fair to say that they weren't mediocre, they just didn't click for you. That's understandable. I'd say give some of them a shot again (particularly prodeus, I'm rather fond of that one) but if you've already done that and it didn't work out then I guess that's that.

I'm not even sure what your post is trying to convey, but indeed not having to press the epic cooldown refill animation is better.

The double shotty is simply more efficient than the normal shotty in standard fire (2 ammo for 3x damage), and pistol standard fire is worse than single SMG in all ways.

Felt too much like nuDoom towards the end and trying to 100% everything is absolutely miserable, but otherwise it was really fun. Music in episode 3 is 10/10.
It's a Doom Eternal clone, except even less compromising on Nightmare. Hit those weakpoints or run out of all resources. I respect that. Beautiful aesthetics, but runs like shit on my 1050Ti.

It honestly caught me off guard. The first couple levels are super easy and tutorial-ish, but once you get some weapons and gadgets it gets good and then continues to get more fun as it goes on. I'll be sad when I finish it. I'm already in episode 3. I'll have to see what that custom map browser is about afterwards. Also, the game can be pretty easy on normal, so you may want to up the difficulty once or twice BUT the difficulty setting in this game increases enemy projectile speed and damage, not enemy count. Be aware of that.

Yes they do, it doesn't matter if you can run around enemies when you can go through or over them. Restrictions are important. Water without a glass is just a puddle.
It's only a problem when the enemies move and shoot slowly enough that they clearly aren't balanced around your abilities, but they are so it's not a problem. If the enemies moved and shot like Quake then you'd have a point, but they don't and you don't.

I've been playing through turok 2 on pc and it's great. I love boomer shooters. there's room for both but I sort of agree. There should be more half life clones.
I'll be honest, I like my FPS grounded. Even Duke Nukem didn't have million colorful explosions all at once. That's why I liked Ion Fury or Cultic, it was action, but didn't feel like some indie ADHD Doom Eternal

Pure fun. The weapons are great and the movement + chainsaw sliding feels smooth as frick. Also love the overall look of the game, even if the art is a bit hit and miss, wish it would have focused less on the cheesy 80s like elements.

But that's not Ion Fury. Ion Fury's levels consist mostly of needlessly oversized open areas and long corridors. The level design has far more in common with Halo than it does Quake.
the first episode has a lot of those needlessly large levels, but iirc things tighten up as the game goes on and you get more indoor environments to explore. it has been a while so maybe I'm misremembering; it could just be that it is that way and it just didn't bother me when I played it.
I also forgot to say but I really enjoyed that the basic mooks could be headshot for quick kills. It's minor but it added a lot to the basic combat loop for me.

Blood's length isn't nearly as long though. Blood keeps encounters feeling pretty fresh, or maybe that's just the result of having one of the best, most satisfying FPS arsenals of all time.

Hated both Prodeus and Ion Fury. Prodeus has some of the blandest level design imaginable. It makes sense though since its pulling from DOOM 2016. Everything just looks the same. Super boring.
Ion Fury has the problem of the environments being so overly detailed and colorful that everything blends together, including the enemies. It doesn't help that a lot of enemies are kind of stagnant and don't seem to move a whole lot.
Anyone who hasn't yet should play HROT. One of the better shooters in recent years.

IF's environments are frickin beautiful, ya c**t. It's like the one thing the game has going for it: Overly proactive mapmakers.
They're "beautiful" in the same sense Bob Ross knockoff paintings you can find in the home of just about any old person are. They're inoerfensive to the eyes and are generic rnough to where you can't recall any individual one's features. They're also nothing more than backdrops. The escher labs isn't just unique visually but also in terms of layout and traversing it. Ion Fury is nothing but a bunch of bland, featureless, loosely interconnected shooting galleries that could take place just about anywhere.
Down on the Farm, Ghost Town, Grainery and Into the Thresher are literally all wide open shooting galleries, along with Erebus Reactor.

I can't really remember at this point, I tried several but bailed very quickly because I just couldn't get into any so the names faded quickly. One was called Proteus or something? Dusk is the only one I forced myself to stick to because it was shilled over and over again so I thought surely I'm missing something, but it's just bland weapons that don't feel fun to use and uninspired level design. The green glowy crossbow as the final weapon was just lol.
In comparison I still frick around in gzdoom with custom wads once or twice a year, replayed the original SShock 2 and even the ancient Red Faction (this one hasn't aged too well tho) and had fun in all of those.
I suppose it's just a (you) issue for me but boomer shooters just don't hit the spot for whatever reason

There is no reason to, ever.
The double shotty is simply more efficient than the normal shotty in standard fire (2 ammo for 3x damage), and pistol standard fire is worse than single SMG in all ways.
This is one of the things I don't like about the game, some weapons and augments just aren't meaningful.

Again not much use after first levels. Explosives or chegg are more effective against enemy hordes and it is useless against splitters aka one of the nastiest enemies on murder machine. I can only see it use against high tier enemies for damage boost but again you have micromissles which can oneshot sloth and with damage augment even more than 1, sniper max charge shot, rl's rocket barrage.

It honestly caught me off guard. The first couple levels are super easy and tutorial-ish, but once you get some weapons and gadgets it gets good and then continues to get more fun as it goes on. I'll be sad when I finish it. I'm already in episode 3. I'll have to see what that custom map browser is about afterwards. Also, the game can be pretty easy on normal, so you may want to up the difficulty once or twice BUT the difficulty setting in this game increases enemy projectile speed and damage, not enemy count. Be aware of that.

The hallmark of a doom was it's fast movement, when you add slides and dashes you reduce movement to a braindead button press. Funnily enough, CoD has slides now, so I guess you should just have a nice day.

you're lopsided summary of doom aside. slides and dashes dont reduce movement to a 'braindead' button press you fricking idiot. especially when the TTK for ur character is much lower and the projectile avoidance requires extensively more effort over Doom.

Yes they do, it doesn't matter if you can run around enemies when you can go through or over them. Restrictions are important. Water without a glass is just a puddle.
It's only a problem when the enemies move and shoot slowly enough that they clearly aren't balanced around your abilities, but they are so it's not a problem. If the enemies moved and shot like Quake then you'd have a point, but they don't and you don't.

'doesnt matter'? but the projectile avoidance is literally THREE DIMENSIONAL compared to doom, with faster moving projectiles, more patterns to them, enemies that predict your movement, etc. running ONLY on an x axis literally means you are going to fricking die. you NEED to move on a y axis to avoid sufficiently too.

you wouldnt understand when its important or why they are even implemented. you explicitly have a bias towards the original doom games and they arent even the most impressive when it comes to 'projectile avoidance' nor the most interesting when it comes to video games.

I'll be honest, I like my FPS grounded. Even Duke Nukem didn't have million colorful explosions all at once. That's why I liked Ion Fury or Cultic, it was action, but didn't feel like some indie ADHD Doom Eternal

The entire justification for this genres existence is that it's like doom while simultaneously playing nothing like it. Ironically the only "boomer shooter" I can think of that plays like Doom is a low budget 2hu fangame.

Actual super boomer here. If wuake is my fav singleplayer fps what would you guys recommend me to play? I looked at amid evil due to the artstyle, is it good?
I'm playing the DLC now. It's really nice looking. Gameplay is pretty basic but the game is fun. It's also one of the only shooters that feels like it's meant to be played on the highest difficulty.
Gonna get that than, ty anon. I really dont want anything other than solid old school gameplay on imaginative maps.
There are no tools or special movement tech, you just make things die.
If you haven't you should check the Arcane Dimensions mod for Quake which is legit better than the main game. It's just Quake but pushing the engine to limits that were unrealistic in 95 so it should be safe for you to like.

The engine in 1996 straight up couldn't do what AD does. And you're selling it short by saying "legit better than the main game" when it blows the main game out of the water. It blows pretty much everything out of the water.
