Best graphics from a 90s video game?

Which video game(s) had THE greatest graphics you can find on a 90s video game? This one is an interesting question for me because there were crazy leaps between the Snes/genesis era and the N64/PS1/saturn era, and then the Dreamcast era. I'm also curious to see what PC game(s) you guys think had THE best graphics from the 90s?

That's BARELY the 90s. The 90s were literally less than six months from ending.

And here we see the problem with the question.

Because November 1999 is still 'the 90's' and pretty much no matter where you draw the cut off for the decade, the best-looking game is going going to be right on that cut off.

        How is that a problem?

          Because it's not
          >best graphics from a 90s video game
          it's
          >best graphics from a Q4 1999 video game

Could've just made a thread about Soul Calibur.

Yes that's how techonological progress works.
There's lots of games to pick from 98-99

But it makes no sense to delimit your relevant time periods for technological progress by a metric that depends on how fast the Earth goes around the Sun, how many fingers humans have and when rabbi Jeshua was thought to have been born (but actually wasn't).

The bigger problems is that there are only three decades of video game history that are fully included in the definition of "retro" that this board uses, only the last one of them has 3D games and no one cares about the first one any more. Like

        Because it's not
        >best graphics from a 90s video game
        it's
        >best graphics from a Q4 1999 video game

Could've just made a thread about Soul Calibur.

said OP should have just made a new SoulCalibur thread because the last one got archived.

      >released Summer of 1998
      >still the good era of anime
      >strong use of primary colours and high saturation
      It counts.

The arcade version of Soul Calibur's graphics are widely acknowledged to have been utterly BFTO'd by the DC version.

I hate that b***h in SC2. Who thought it was a good idea to give both ranged attacks that can reach through half of the map as well as extremely strong grabs to the same character? It doesn't matter if I try to get close or keep her at a distance, I get fricked anyway. Rolling her at Stage 5 or 6 almost always kills my 1cc attempt. She's much easier to fight against in SC1 and SC3 though.

This is easy as there is one obvious correct answer and if you say anything else you must be moronic as there was no system more advanced than this one in the 90s. picrel

Gotta be Shenmue. Even though a lot of the non essential npcs look like ass, everything else is amazing for the time especially for a console game. The level of detail in every room and environment is crazy and still unmatched by a lot of the garbage that comes out today, and the character models and animation for the important characters is really impressive for 99.

Jurassic Park the arcade game looks the best to me, even if Quake 3 is technically better it looks really ugly in comparison from todays perspective.

The MDK reflection area is also stunning on pc, its a pretty simple technique but looks great.

The intricate detail is amazing, you can just walk around and look at stuff. It has a hand made look to it.

Jurassic Park is very close to being visually stunning, but the low resolution and too many un-animated enemies really hurts it.

Best graphics of the 90s is hard because it depends on what you're looking for. Fighting games definitely have the most style, best animations, biggest sprites, etc, but there's not a whole lot else going on, so it seems lame choosing one over, say, a Metal Slug game or the Dungeons and Dragons games, where there's a ton of animated characters on screen. How can you determine which one is "the best"? Kind of depends if you think the Marvel style of Marvel vs. Capcom looks better than the original anime style of Vampire Savior. I hate the style of Street Fighter 3, but has extremely good animation.
