    openxcom
I would recommend ironman as well, it's much more fun

Openxcom plus the final modpack plus openxcom extended. It's basically Vanilla+ and fixed literally every problem with the game that you can think of.

I don't recommend iron man for a first playthrough though.

Nice you all seem to be in agremeent.
      >plus the final modpack
      >plus openxcom extended
      I think I'll skip these.
It's my first time playing and seems like those things are more for later when I want to expand the experience.

I actually highly suggest playing with them over vanilla. I had the same mindset as you did when I picked the game back up, but I can safely say that the final modpack and openxcom extended are just flat out superior to the base game. It's like they looked at every "blank" in the base game and filled it in.

Yeah, don't bother with mods. The vanilla campaign isn't that long, finish it and see if you want more.

openxcom all the way. Once you've played it, then you can start adding mods. There's a bunch of good ones out there. Xpiratez is overhyped, because the average coomer just sees boobie and immediately thinks it's the best mod ever. But there's plenty of other mods to play instead.

      What mods do you suggest?

Do you have severe autism and too much time on your hands? If yes then either Xfiles, Xpiratez or ROSIGMA
        Do you like wh40k?
        Then Wh40k mod
        Want some smaller scale mod?
        UNEXCOM and all its submods

ROSIGMA is an absolute shitshow. But true 40k fans probably like it, because if they didn't like atrocious games, they wouldn't be 40k fans in the first place.

Hardmode Expansion. Its keeps the vanilla flavour but the difficulty is cranked to 11.

i cant play without less dense smoke mod, it just obscures too much when rescaled on modern screen sizes. Also the unit path with AP costs needs to be activated in openxcom its off by default.

Play the original unmodded version, don't listen to zoomers who tell you to download mods that make the game easier

Man, I tried the new XCOMs after finishing a months long run of Xcom Files and I dont understand who could possibly like them.

Worst part is the narrative-based missions with hidden triggers designed to be GOTCHA moments and stuff like that, worst fricking design.

The Nucom games are a step back gameplay and mechanicas-wise from the original. Between the pod system with aliens always being in groups and getting a free move, the awful "one move one action" game design instead of based granular Time Units, and the ridiculous accuracy system over vector projectiles is just ridiculous to see in a game made 20 plus years later.

They're fun for what they are. I think Firaxis did an all right job translating the overall structure of X-Com into a game that felt modern in 2012.
