Just because the content is good doesn't mean the writing is, I like how depressing the scenario in 3 is but its a massive stretch to say its well written. But as always you have no idea how the translation is. Many of the later games were absolutely butchered especially V.

        Anonymous

As someone who played these in JP I'm pretty sure you're overreacting pretty hard. It's Etrian Odyssey there isn't much of a writing and this is not the localization's fault. Even if they had gotten the whole mars thing right in the localization it wouldn't have suddenly transformed the whole thing into god writing.

He's right though, nobody cares about a game's story more than the writer themselves, and often times the best stories are those the players themselves tell.

Disagree, Dragon's Crown's playable characters are bursting with personalities and the camp cooking are a nice addition, both enhance the roleplaying and help with stirring and reinforcing the imagination of players.

What Ninou said here sounds like a cop-out, the inn is just a several seconds soulless menu screen with some dialogues from the owner, no need to excuse the game with, "Uh, uh, your party eat something at the inn, uh uh, and ninja eats using chopstick and uh uh uh landsknecht laughes so loud uh, and and... Any advice for using the story Highlander in the EO1 remake?

It's so alien to have a party you're forced to use.

        Anonymous

Bloody Offence is his most broken skill. At the start of boss fights, get him, Ricky, and Arthur in the same row and use (preferably boosted) Bloody Offence. Easy game.

        >It's so alien to have a party you're forced to use.
Well why'd ya pick story mode then dummy

Do I need to worry about Grimore stones in order to beat the story mode?

I've beaten the superboss without a single grimoire, so no.

gotcha! thanks for explaining anon! feeling confident about this

Good luck anon! Don't neglect the sea exploration, beating those bosses can give good equipment and limit skills that are super helpful for the main game.

        Anonymous

Get used to moving all your attackers on the same row to get bloody offense going on all of them. Spear assist, delay charge, and cross charge are what you should mostly be focusing on. I think I eventually swapped Simon to troub for the healing song to counteract the constant damage you'll be dealing to yourself every time you attack.

          Anonymous

Wait you can change character classes in story mode?

            Anonymous

Yes, reclassing is a thing, not only for story mode but for regular classes as well. It keeps their portrait and changes the class but base stats stay the same, so don't go changing an alchemist into ronin or something.

it's a completely normal party other than having a forced medic

Do I need to worry about Grimore stones in order to beat the story mode?

depends what you mean by "beat the story mode"
just getting to credits doesn't need any grimoires whatsoever dealing with superboss is a different thing though

  10. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

I tried 4 as my first one. I didn't like how slow exploration felt and it felt like my party was terribly weak with barely any of their good shit yet. I beat the first stratum or whatever it was called, but I never felt like picking that shit up again afterwards.

I'm sure it gets addicting and much better, but the slow exp gain and the level up system where you choose a particular perk/skill when leveling up felt too weak to give a shit. Doesn't help when the Fortress class has what sounds like an absolutely required skill, which is passive by the way, and it was basically "take less damage by 10%" or some dull shit. Makes sense the tank would pick it, but holy shit that kind of stuff makes leveling up feel wack.

Untold games are both great unless you are a hardcore purist. 1 especially is pretty much a complete upgrade aside from the grimoirse stones being dumb as frick.

The map and classes had complete different designs between originals and remakes so they are all worth playing if you love the series.

Very much so. QoL, grimoire stones (which most of the playerbase derides anyway), different maps especially in 2U, class rebalancing with modified kits to work with and their overall tiers in the games.
Like Landsknechts are borderline garbage in og 2 and serviceable in 2U.

It is on switch I think too, get whichever one you give a shit about.

Anyway non-exhaustive list of shit is basically higher resolution screen, enemy weaknesses displayed before you attack, ALL of the Plus Disk content included with the bugfixes, increased map speed, shortcut for stat increases for 10/100 at a time, idk probably some other shit im forgetting.

How is this game challenge wise? I know little about touhou outside of the music.

Bit grindy in some parts, bosses vary between "hyper pad a single defensive stat to neuter them" to "Don't fricking try to buff yourself/debuff them or they'll enrage and instakill someone"

You don't really need to know much about 2hu to get the gameplay but some of the character combinations won't make sense, like for example theres a "SDM Members" skill you can learn that passively increases all your stats if the front line has other SDM Members in there (Sakuya, Remilia, Hong, Patchouli), this would be a oh yeah duh moment for people familiar with the series but anybody that isn't would have to go into each skill page and figure out who the frick an SDM member is. Other things like "Why does this bird use fire attacks" or "Why is this white haired b***h literally immortal" would just be oddities to others.

Also a ridiculously large cast that all interact or replace eachother in some way so you can waifugay a bit and not miss out. Don't like Aya? Mystia, Chen, Orin, Sakuya can all play a sort of similar role. "Tank" selection is a bit more limited especially as you near endgame but otherwise your selection of nukers is massive. Also your party is 12 characters with 4 active at a time that you regularly swap in and out mid-battle.

Also the steam version for LoT2 is an official english translation rather than a hackjob patch so all the text stuff is fixed.

Theres a few really unique ones, a lot of overlap between some attackers.
You WILL need a "tank" which is likely going to be Momiji or Komachi for like 50% of the game, though theres other sufficiently chunky characters that can be turned into tanks with enough effort. Parsee has a ridiculous base MND stat so she can literally solo most magic-only enemies and take no damage.

if you can read and have half a brain you will find an OP strategy once you have a party of 12 and use it to unga bunga 80% of the game, but the remaining 20% aka the bosses are pretty good and enjoyable even with ungatard abuse

That's an artificial problem with both atlus and the console itself.
Normally, autistic people would just grind someone up, savesplit before spending anything, spend resources in this new save, see if it works, load the savesplit before spending anything, repeat.

EO is a dead franchise whose only purpose (like all normalgay triangle shit square/atlus/nintendo put out) is to funnel people into actually good games

I swear people like you are so terminally online.
Average people don't even know games like Persona or SMT exist, let alone fricking EO.
The entire franchise has only sold a combined 1.5 million copies across every game worldwide. Like really homie, you are fricking moronic.
Furthermore, even if it IS a dead franchise, it's a GOOD franchise. "actually good games" isn't 2hutrash.

I just looked at a guide quick and I was using all the shittiest categories of skills lmao. Frick that shit, what the hell

The best games are 3 and U2, the good games are 4 and V. I don't see the value in recommending people start with 4 though, one of the best parts about the series is the difficulty of regular encounters and 4 is just straight easy all the way through.

How is 4 both good even though no challenging? With two recommendations I'll play it. Knowing my luck I'll pick the crappiest classes and skills accidentally which will add to the difficulty

          Anonymous

Lots of good synergy between classes, the game being easier means you can make everything you want work easily, all kinds of parties work including safe/stall comps. Just a shame the exploration is a bit weak and there's not a lot of challenge in it.

I love to play as a summoner in games, what's the best EO game for me?

V for necromancer and rover. Wilding in 3 is extremely underrated too.

what the other anon said, ailments are overpowered in EO games and 3 is no exception, I stunlocked most of the bosses

            >ailments are overpowered in 3
Kek no they're fricking not. Stun locking with shogun/buccaneer is great, but stun is the only good ailment. 3 is balanced in a way where ailments and binds on enemies and bosses simply don't work after they land once.

More memes from someone that didn't actually use a Wilding. Accumulated Resistance doesn't mean anything when you can rotate panic, paralysis and binds to get 10 free turns when fights end in under 20.

Don't forget to make a bunch of farmers with the passive XP trait you will absolutely need those later

Ninja sub Zodiac is pretty much needed in the final floor to be a tp battery. Plus Ninja is a fun class.

        Anonymous

I never used ether past stratum 2 or so, hell even in stratum 1 you can farm amrita thanks to trading. Later you have so many curatives it just seems excessive to dedicate a party member to tp recovery only

        Anonymous

Why anon? Amritas are cheap and plentiful. Even a normal zodiac is good enough for TP duty, and can actually do damage in boss fights.

I think EO3 ninjas are at their best when they're phys tanking, as they get a 100% phys negation skill + 100% redirection. Combine that with hoplite/zodiac and you can nullify most attacks in the game. Pretty cheesy though

              Anonymous

Eh. It's EO3. If you aren't cheesing the game, the game's cheesing you.

        >Glad
        >Ninja
        >Arbalest
        >Monk
        Good enough?

Don't forget to make a bunch of farmers with the passive XP trait you will absolutely need those later

How important is that? I've only played 4 before and didn't bother. Is it make a party of farmers and farm stuff?

          Anonymous

          >Good enough?
Yup. Very strong and straightforward classes to build. Just be wary that arbalest is your only (good) source of elemental damage, so make sure to pick up limits like Hellfire that your Monk can use as well.

          >How important is that?
Ok, here's what you do. Make 5 farmers and put combat study on them. Also make 5 ninjas and put combat study on them too.
When the farmers reach level 5 passively, rest them (for FREE - no lost levels) and respec into some farming skills, making sure one gets the monster avoid skill, and the rest split between getting rarer items (don't get too much of this) and getting more items at gather points. This will be your farming party until subclassing.
When you can subclass, sub those Ninjas into Ninja/Farmers. Get the TP reducing skill and all the good farming skills. You can now effectively farm infinite items in a single trip, limited only by your bag space.

While I do prefer the original map design, (well, apart from not even having enough icons to map the floors properly), the enemy formations in Untold are way stronger and there's no broken immunize to fall back on, and also surprise attacks are more likely in Untold (cause Survivalist got nerfed) so you're more likely to wipe and lose all progress. Two sides of the same coin, I love both incarnations of Claret Hollows

because they want to be hardcore but forgot that making your game hardcore by actively developing mechanics which punish people for playing well is unfun

a lot of people liked the first one because it was trying to be different, but it was still a frustrating game, and them doubling down with the second one is even more moronic. thankfully people are beginning to more openly talk about how shit it is
