i wouldn't really use bethesda as the standard for western game programming. western studios were light years ahead of japanese studios in terms of technical prowess for like 2 decades between 1995-2015. you had maverick studios like id writing space magic game engines while japanese programmers never really progressed due to their culture favoring conservative corporations and seniority over merit. like the japanese didn't know how to write rollback netcode up until recently, whereas it had become industry standard in western games by the year 2000.
you can kinda see a funny example of this in the dark souls series: DS1 didn't have rollback netcode. DS2 was developed by a newer, younger team, and they implemented rollback and other networking fixes, and the online actually worked. DS3 was developed by the original team again, and rollback was gone and online was broken again. same with elden ring. either the senior team didn't understand the netcode, or they didn't care enough to try to port it from the ds2 branch, or they just flat out didn't like the idea of implementing something that the newer guys cooked up. either way it shows how regressive the japanese tend to be in terms of technical stuff.
recently the japanese have caught up, partially due to being forced to bring in western consults and western studios have gotten worse due to brain drain.
