Oh God his video made me realize how on tracks rdr2's missions are. Frick I love the story and open world but the juxtaposition to the story missions was so jaring.
And it's weird cause they put all this effort into npc systems and world design and then make you do these super cinematic things and it feels like the story mission designers are not talking at all to the open world gameplay designers

I said it was poorly written because the game never even tries aligning these 2 separate conflicting states and just outright ignores it. A major issue is the engine, it can't handle it. After No Mans Sky you can't be an AAA studio and make an space game where you land on a planet via a loading screen.
I still wouldn't have cared about landing with a loading screen. So long as they'd let me fly the fricking thing across the planet AND cut it down on a billion other loading screens and hidden loading screens/animations.
Starfield is shit but I frankly don't take his "X is outdated" shtick. It's like saying McDonald's is outdated. The reason companies like Rockstar or Bethesda are so successful despite their gameplay being identical is because people know what they get and they want it. It's perfectly fine. There are games that innovate, sometimes successfully and sometimes not, and games that do the same thing successfully (almost) every time. Starfield has very different issues, in fact straying from the formula is one of its problems.

I'm gonna give you something much simpler, just the concept of multiple existing questlines relating to character archetypes you can choose to play as, which I would say is one of the cores of Elder Scrolls by this point [alongside the whole "NPCs with routines and settlements that try to give off the feel of being alive" thing that you could argue until the end of time whether it succeeds at or not]
Feel like playing some kind of fighter, Companions/Fighter's Guild is there. Mage, Arcane University. Assassin, Dark Brotherhood/Morag Tong. Thief [which impressively enough is treated as a different thing from Assassin, which I don't think most games would do], Thieves' Guild.
Just something to dig into the fantasy of "I am playing this kind of character, and going off into the world, and potentially have the change to join with organizations of like-minded people to advance in and gain power and learn my craft", which can be quite cool.
It's because making Skyrim clones requires a big development team and a big budget. Still, we have Avowed coming soon, it will blow Gaythesda out of the water
Skyrim skirts by with nostalgia and that initial hype despite its flaws. Instead of trying to patch up those flaws, it feels like Bethesda doubled down on the weakest elements of Skyrim and then Fallout 4.
If a 420 person company is considered relatively tiny, it surprises my that it doesn't see more competition. That there isn't a jumbo studio that sweeps in and makes a Not-Elder Scrolls and Not-Fallout. And every time anybody gets close to trying, they get deflected away into making something fundamentally different.
When Gearbox took a shot at it, they made Borderlands, which is all looting and shooting with no world. When Obsidian tried, they made Outer Worlds, where the tone is all fricked up, the atmosphere is nonexistent, and the world is shattered into tiny planets.
For an industry that's supposedly so good at regurgitating the same things over and over again, it seems to catastrophically and mysteriously fail at trying to come up with new versions of this one concept, and it's not like it's niche since Skyrim has probably sold more than the goddamn bible by this point

A major issue is the engine, it can't handle it. After No Mans Sky you can't be an AAA studio and make an space game where you land on a planet via a loading screen.
I still wouldn't have cared about landing with a loading screen. So long as they'd let me fly the fricking thing across the planet AND cut it down on a billion other loading screens and hidden loading screens/animations.
Starfield is shit but I frankly don't take his "X is outdated" shtick. It's like saying McDonald's is outdated. The reason companies like Rockstar or Bethesda are so successful despite their gameplay being identical is because people know what they get and they want it. It's perfectly fine. There are games that innovate, sometimes successfully and sometimes not, and games that do the same thing successfully (almost) every time. Starfield has very different issues, in fact straying from the formula is one of its problems.

I'm gonna give you something much simpler, just the concept of multiple existing questlines relating to character archetypes you can choose to play as, which I would say is one of the cores of Elder Scrolls by this point [alongside the whole "NPCs with routines and settlements that try to give off the feel of being alive" thing that you could argue until the end of time whether it succeeds at or not]
Feel like playing some kind of fighter, Companions/Fighter's Guild is there. Mage, Arcane University. Assassin, Dark Brotherhood/Morag Tong. Thief [which impressively enough is treated as a different thing from Assassin, which I don't think most games would do], Thieves' Guild.
Just something to dig into the fantasy of "I am playing this kind of character, and going off into the world, and potentially have the change to join with organizations of like-minded people to advance in and gain power and learn my craft", which can be quite cool.
It's because making Skyrim clones requires a big development team and a big budget. Still, we have Avowed coming soon, it will blow Gaythesda out of the water

If a 420 person company is considered relatively tiny, it surprises my that it doesn't see more competition. That there isn't a jumbo studio that sweeps in and makes a Not-Elder Scrolls and Not-Fallout. And every time anybody gets close to trying, they get deflected away into making something fundamentally different.
When Gearbox took a shot at it, they made Borderlands, which is all looting and shooting with no world. When Obsidian tried, they made Outer Worlds, where the tone is all fricked up, the atmosphere is nonexistent, and the world is shattered into tiny planets.
For an industry that's supposedly so good at regurgitating the same things over and over again, it seems to catastrophically and mysteriously fail at trying to come up with new versions of this one concept, and it's not like it's niche since Skyrim has probably sold more than the goddamn bible by this point
