4 is where most newbies start and that's where the nocturne hatred comes from.

Same vortex world. The pillar you see next to Tokyo tower is from the ending of Nocturne where Kagutsuchi shoots out all its pillars and crumbles.
Not the same. TDE is canon in V's continuity. Demifiend destroyed his original world because that was the cost of becoming a new demon of darkness. V's world was invaded by Lucifer with Demifiend who destroyed Kagutsuchi long before V starts. I suspect that V's world was Nocturne continuity Lucifer's original world where the real YHVH was, but there's not much in the game to support that.
It'd probably make the most sense for V to be set after Demon ending of Nocturne, with TDE having also happened in another world in the Amala Network. All the humans are already dead, Kagutsuchi is gone, sets up for YHVH to come in pissed off they've broken the world and a Law vs Chaos fight, and YHVH just tries to recreate the Freedom ending reset but without Kagutsuchi around and him dead afterwards, it's on a time limit.

V. V is kino
V is very... empty.
IV's difficulty can be harsh for a beginner (and then it fall off quickly once you actually understand what to do, while V is much better balanced), but IV's story has a lot more going on.
If you think the lack of story won't bother you at all, then go with V.
I personally started with SMT1 and was so enthralled by it that I decided to marathon the rest of the mainline series (and Strange Journey). I know some people will say "oh the gameplay is bad" but as my first FPDC, along with its subject matter, I had a very hard time putting it down. I've enjoyed every other Megaten game I've played through since then, even Last Bible (which could really stand to be rebalanced to be more fun, it's what I would call an "almost good" game).
Its pretty funny when you think about it. SMT 1 and 2 are extremely fast pace compare to the new games, and the OST really push that rush.
They do have a brisk pace to them, part of why I loved them. The OST's are just fantastic too. SMT2's battle theme doesn't get enough love.
I played SNES first quite awhile back, but life got in the way of completing the game so I took a break. Later, when the GBA version was translated, I played through it that way. Sure the music is worse, but having an official script seemed better and I was right. Compared to the SNES version dialogue was much better overall. Funnily enough the Diamond Realm is where I put the game down too on my initial attempt on SNES but it had nothing to do with the game itself lol.
Did you play the PSX or SNES version? I couldn't make it through the SNES release and put it down by the time I hit the Diamond Realm. Years later decided to revisit it and blasted through the PSX port and honestly loved the game. I desperately want the PSX ports of II and if.. to get translated so I can finally play them.

divine arrowfall is pretty good for a while, but thalassic calamity with a dragon race demon for amogatoki: dance is the best magic damage for beano.
what I found was that you only get to allocate 1 miserable point every level so regardless you always have enough magic for magical skills and enough strength for physical builds.
So just pick whatever.
You're better off dumping the first 16/17 points into Vit and putting everything else into Str/Mag. Unlike the other games, Vit actually does make a difference in your bulk and being well ahead of the curve does a lot more for you than doing marginally more damage early game.
skill slots are at a premium for a while though. phys will probably end up running both because you don't exactly have a lot of options to use, but magic has no reason to use sakanagi instead of just going for weakness fishing/utility.

Likewise Divine Wrath at the time you get it and for quite a while will be the single best single target spell you have for anything that takes more damage from magic than physical skills and for generally pressing turns.
From there the remaining skills can be whatever you need, be it support or healing skills or whatever's useful for the current area you're exploring.
there's only like 3 enemies in V that aren't weak to some form of element and magic has an easier time hitting weaknesses than phys. hence they don't really need to bother with almighty outside of probably divine arrowfall if you want a cheap aoe for midgame.
phys on the other hand, does not have as many options, so it makes sense that you'd slot in stuff like ruinous thunder and divine arrowfall in your build. arrowfall in particular because you want to buy almighty up for sakanagi/murakumo anyway.
its a subtle difference in build style.
Aramasa has an effective power of 160. If you get that singular crit, its more like 170.
Scratch Dance hits for a minimum of 165 against any remotely relevant target.
And on crit turns, Bestial Bite is dumb and turns into 200.
I just use Aramasa because its cool but its one of those things that's kind of wimpy when you look at it numerically.
The thing is that building demons is easier than ever, and you always have 3 demons to cover up for whatever. So having Beano have a source of really fricking strong almighty damage that can crit is always a valuable option. Specially since you have the option to force all your attacks to crit.
I think it's rather valuable to keep beano as a jack of all trades that carries than pigeonholing him into only a damage dealer or a press turner. When push come to shove if you need to press turns you can just use a stone.
The point of Aramasa crit fishing is just for the extra press turn, anon...

SMTV has a Neutral path feels like a Law path, a Law path that feels like a Chaos path, and a Chaos path that feels like a Neutral path.
I think it was very deliberate for Law and chaos to get tangled up.
Onmicidal Neutral has always been a thing, though.
Living under the protection of Japan's gods was the neutral path in IV, and working in harmony with demons was a neutral path in tbh. Really, the biggest problem I have with the true neutral path is that you have to do a bunch of sidequests where you help out friendly demons to unlock it, only to banish them all from the world.

SMTIV has a bunch of Strange Journeys references but doesn't really commit to it.
SMTIVA (mostly) sticked to Kaneko's original lore for SMTIV world, which had no ties to Strange Journey at all. You have reused props from IV, but it's pretty noticeable stuff like the Gaian's worshiping Mem Aleph, Mastema having a story role and the foreigner Demonica team that's stronger than Japan's is never mentioned.
To be honest, IV and IVA storyline are all over the fricking place. They had a nice idea of redoing the first two games, I and II, but with a twist: Law are backwards imitating medieval Europe and Japan is cyberpunk-rish with all the low life-high tech. But aside from that nice idea for an inversion everything is messy.
Fricking Masakado wank on Neutral path ruined the game and fricked the entire political take because the MAH TOKYO'S SPIRIT bullshit confuse itself with the BAKA GAIJIN JAPAN NUMBER ONE Chaos criticism, to the point where you've questlines in IVA trying to fix the issue.
Also, SMTIV's tweaking Kaneko's original lore and then IVA walking back and going all in on it results in some story mismatches.
Originally, in Kaneko's outline for IV, the law forces themselves were supposed to create and spread the demon summoning program as part of their plan to make people yearn for God's salvation, with the whole cycle happening due to them like revealed in Apocalypse. You have one random npc in Infernal Tokyo in the final game that claims the demon invasion was all due to the law forces' plan as a leftover of that original plot.
The actual IV changed it to Stephen distributing the demon summoning program, including an old report that mentions the program being spread and the demon infestation getting even worse afterwards. The law forces genuinely seem to want to wipe out all demons/humans influenced by demons.
Then comes Apocalypse and we're back to the law forces being behind the demons spreading in the first place... but Stephen is still kept around and credited for the Devil Summoning program, but he's never blamed for the demon infestation. It's all just credited to "God's plan" and the reactor. Even though the ones in control of the reactor in IV were the White.

IIRC the demons spreading was due to the Yamato Reactor being pushed by a military general who was paranoid of foreign influences and resorted to use human sacrifices and demonic rituals to give an edge to japan technology.
I found it this aspect of Apocalypse story quite interesting because a good amount of Apo's story is spent in thematically and ideologically counterpointing the IV's Neutral Ending.
I'm glad IVA stopped IV Neutral ending from happening, because it felt like they straight up did not consider how terrible it was. Like there are multiple topside cities outside of Mikado, with no modern tech and no demon summoning programs, just middle ages farmers and fishermen. The dome falls and demons just spill out, like they did nothing to reduce the numbers that had plagued Tokyo for 25+ years, they'd actually gotten worse due to formerly placated ones not getting Reds and the gate to the expanse being reopened at least 2 more times.

That's because they went absolute boinkers with Masakado masturbation where the Tokyo's samurai spirit just told the foreigners to get off his goddamn back, which makes the Neutral path almost an endorsement of the Chaos path what with nationalistic demons cannibalizing people and shit. Hell, i think they even mentioned that Masakado was one of them.
the thing is that beyond the facts, it's about the symbol. The symbol of Tokyo being finally free from the firmament and the liberation of a city that's been shackled.
The way Apocalypse went about was pretty genious in my eyes. By turning Flynn's role as a symbol of hope for Tokyo into a huge weakness by making people reliant on him rather than themselves, as seen by how skinsuit Shesha was able to eat their souls after the mexican standoff.

It's not very much like DS, it's very Ogre Battle explicitly (not Tactics Ogre either). Personally not a big fan of it, it's a sort of RTS with autobattling that you have to set if/then conditions on characters to have input on them.
Units are made up of multiple characters you assign together, so that's the part that's kinda DS, but the way battles happen, huge focus on matchups (nearly all unit types are just hard countered by other units to the point they die near instantly to what they're weak to, rock paper scissor style), and real time aspect to movement felt awful to me.
Gotcha still sounds pretty interesting

Yeah, strategy games usually filter the frick out of me but the mainline-inspired battle segments made it more fun. Battle theme's totally rockin', too.
However I'd say the story/characters got me through it moreso than the gameplay, it's not the greatest or anything but the setting of a demon-infested lockdown, and choosing how to spend in-game time in a way that really made me feel like my choices mattered, kept me captivated

Most of the world was fricked up in Armageddon, but the Shekinah Glory's pretty much hitting the reset switch, like how the Freedom ending in Nocturne is to the Vortex World.
But since YHVH was also killed while doing it, that reset is starting to fade away across the world and revert back to post-Armageddon (essentially a vortex world).
And TDE Demifiend absolutely lets himself get used by Lucifer, he becomes a general for him. If SMTV's in the same world as Nocturne, then if it's after a TDE ending then Demifiend simply left the world through the Amala Network because he has bigger things to do. If it's after any other ending, Demifiend's probably just dead from Armageddon and not brought back to life by YHVH's Shekinah Glory (or if he was, brought back pre-magatama so he'd just be some random 35 year old dude by SMTV).
Demifiend still has his power in the Freedom Ending, Lucifer says as much. He just hasn't lost his humanity. Demifiend is never truly depowered in any of the endings, so in theory, any of them can lead into SMT5.
Him being around's not really important to any of them though. Armageddon happens 18 years before SMTV and most assume that's around where Nocturne happened (since SMTV released 18 years after Nocturne).
All of humanity got wiped, so sounds like another Conception that never had anyone reach Kagatsuchi, then a shaky reset for 18 years before it starts going back to shit. So he either died or got reset, else he'd at least get a little bit of attention.

SMT V Vengeance is coming out in June, but it gave me the sudden urge to play SMT V now after having it in my backlog all this time. I see that you can choose at the beginning to play the original route or play the new route. So, I wouldn't be missing much by playing the base game now, then just playing through the new route when Vengeance comes out? Or are there a bunch of minor changes to the base game too that will make it worth waiting to play?
the only base game changes would be the demon on the compendium because they added a few, but its the same game overall the normal route
QoL, performance, and other various things will be in the SMTVV version of the original story, might be better to wait in case those make it feel better.
Then again, if you don't think it'd burn you out or anything to be doing another full playthrough in 4 months, doing the original now and new route on Vengeance puts you in the same boat as anyone who played the original.

Komori was right, the main appeal of SMT for me is the monster collecting.
It's more concerning that it took this long to figure out what the true appeal of smt is and it's always been the atmosphere and the demons. You don't have to go in that hard with the human characters. Make them likeable and give them a story of course, but add tons and tons of demon interaction on top of that. It's really what the people want.
Base V already did a good job with the custom conversations between certain demons, hope we get more of that in VV.

My only experience with Shin Megami Tensei is reading novelization (?) of the events of the first game, as well as playing a little bit of Strange Journey before getting thoroughly filtered in the shopping mall. Is SMT 1 worth playing? I really like dungeon crawlers, but from what I understand the dungeon crawl-style SMT games are incredibly complicated and difficult. I really liked the story that was in the novel version, though. It was very interesting.

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei and Shin Megami Tensei 1 aren't the same. SMT 1 is made to steer away from the novel and the copyright non-sense. As for the game, SMT 1 is a blob RPG. Most SMT in general are Blob RPG. I play the PS1 translation version and I love how fast pace it is. The story is okay, there are times when the enemy spawn is stupidly crazy. There are puzzle and it can be annoying, but there are gamefaq guide for that if you're really stuck or lost. OST are really good.
If you want to play the RPG base on the novel, look into
Kyūyaku Megami Tensei, which is Megami Tensei and Megami Tensei 2

honestly it's just the tokyo focus that they need to get over. it was one thing when it was just mainline where it'd get fricked and rebuilt from the ashes but now every single subseries is set there, Persona 5, Soul Hackers 2, SMTV. more stuff like strange journey or even a globetrotting game would be cool but even the era of fictionalized japanese cities was better.
Just sounds like you're jealous that no Americans or Europeans make games with similar premises that take place in their home nation. I doubt there will ever be a Megaten game that isn't made for the Japanese first and foremost. The rest of the planet's just an afterthought.

In Devil Survivor, Japan is ground zero for the demon apocalypse, but if you can make it through, then Japan is basically the only nation with Devil Summoners, turning them into an international superpower that no one can hope to rival.
