The thing is how Cloud already had severe low self esteem issues, he always saw himself like trash even when he becomes a competent grunt
So failing to become a soldier, the embarassment to appear before Tifa again as a failure, the destruction of his village and mother's murder by the hands of Sephiroth, and being experimented by Hojo for 5 years with absurd mako levels destroys his psyche
So when Zack dies saving him, Jenova crafts a new psyche for Cloud based on Zack's. So this is why Cloud copies the way Zack acts and behaves, but not perfectly, knowing how Cloud isnt Zack.
Part of Tifa's doubts comes from both ways, sure Cloud knew things because he was one of those grunts, but Cloud remembers the memories as if he was Zack with all the confidence in the world. When you see someone tellling a story with so many details, you get doubts.

Sephiroth isnt even schizophrenic, he's just problematic in many ways and manipulative. He isnt insane. The actual schizo in the cast is the protagonist.
The most interesting aspect of FF7 is how some party members do realize how Cloud's perspective doesnt make sense. But he's so unstable and tells it with so many details that Tifa gets afraid of doubting him and starts questioning herself if her memories are true.

So failing to become a soldier, the embarassment to appear before Tifa again as a failure, the destruction of his village and mother's murder by the hands of Sephiroth, and being experimented by Hojo for 5 years with absurd mako levels destroys his psyche
So when Zack dies saving him, Jenova crafts a new psyche for Cloud based on Zack's. So this is why Cloud copies the way Zack acts and behaves, but not perfectly, knowing how Cloud isnt Zack.
Part of Tifa's doubts comes from both ways, sure Cloud knew things because he was one of those grunts, but Cloud remembers the memories as if he was Zack with all the confidence in the world. When you see someone tellling a story with so many details, you get doubts.
Cloud is one reveal away from being one of those black robbed guys. The only difference is how his mind protects itself from it.
FF7's story is poorly written[/the game itself doesn't explain a lot of these things properly.
