I use CreamAPI for Repentance (I will never, ever pay for AfterbirthMinus), and I can subscribe to mods on the Steam workshop and have them installed directly into my pirated Isaac folder. Works like a charm.

Its difficulty is obnoxious imo unlike other games that are supposed to be "hardcore". You also need lots of mods for some basic qol stuff that should've been in the game by now (item description). So pirate it until Edmund makes it more casual

I did. I was a fan of super meat boy and gish as a kid, and I saw the tboi trailer on steam (maybe?) when it was uploaded. It REALLY intrigued and unsettled me, I was so excited to see how it would play and what kind of game it would be (trailer was cinematic) I waited for it every day, then Edmund uploaded it on Newgrounds. I played it, was a huge fan, but was also a huge gay, so I immediately pirated it when it came out. I absolutely loved it. My first roguelite. Played it so much coming home after getting beat up, humiliated, bullied by the homosexuals and homosexual teachers. I lived in it. There was nothing like coming home and braving the dungeon. It was fun and creepy, and I could really relate to Isaac, having a narcissist mother. I loved creepy and weird shit, partly because mother hated it and forbade me from partaking in anything like this, she hated it, hated fun, hated me having fun, so every time I delved into the basement, I felt free. It felt sacrilegious, I was breaking rules, it was so taboo. It had satanism, criticism on religion, abortion, suicide, violence, and a fat, ugly moron of a crazy mom. Mother would throw a shit fit, cry, scream, beat me up, guilt me for getting beat up and make fun of me for crying, restrict computer usage and cry to my dad, then ignore me for 3-4 days, then cry, hug me and make my favorite dish to bribe me if she saw any of this. It was my cathartic little world, I reveled in it. I also bought it later. Thank you, Edmund. It was beautiful. It was a mood, no one would get it. Isaac is literally me. The game really influenced my sense of humor and fed my curiosity regarding symbolism, mythology, the occult, and edginess, all things macabre and odd.

And it was so great because I had (and have) a vivid imagination, so I really felt like I was there, in the basement. Jumping down a hatch into the unknown took my breath away every time, making me wonder what horrors await beneath. Beating the boss felt so good, a nice dopamine hit every time. Finding Polyphemus and Sacred Heart and Brimstone felt amazing, I savored every moment. Getting these was such a rush. The music, the art, sound effects, enemy design, it was astonishing to me, the game was so huge for my little cranium at the time.

Having dug through the original Flash game's sprites myself, it feels kind of weird to have idolized them as a kid since a majority of them were rushed or Frankensteined together from other sprites to meet the 3 month dev time. Ed has repeatedly called the art in the Flash version sloppy, but I used to spend like days trying to imitate them on pencil and paper. I think the one important thing I picked up from doing that so often is that slight asymmetry is the key to looking natural.
Ed is genuinely an excellent artist, it's just that he does things quick and dirty.
Still a huge inspiration for me.

Since we're both bizarrely anal about capturing some of Ed's distilled essence, might I suggest looking at the media that influenced him? He's cited things like Mad Magazine, Garbage Pail Kids, and Ren & Stimpy, but most importantly is probably Clay Butler. He's the guy that got Ed making comics and doing independent art in the first place way back in the 90s.

I started playing when they released the Wrath Of The Lamb DLC for the flash version, I randomly clicked on a review article and the artsyle got my attention. I was in highschool.
Fastfoward to 2023 and I just 100%'ed the final DLC for the Remake.
I played every content as it got released, I played Antibirth when it was just a mod. I love this game like you wouldn't believe, and I'll be there when Ed releases Isaac 2 in 2040.

And then Rebirth happened, OST was shit, game was easy as your mom's c**t and style was lost on me. That flash-ify project was promising, but couldn't keep up with constantly releasing DLCs, so I think it went nowhere.

Understand that he was such a big deal at the time, that SMB's popularity was so huge, that he was already being filmed to co-feature in Indie Game: The Movie before Isaac even released. We simply don't have indie devs with "star" power like this anymore, for better or for worse.

To this day, I still think the flesh artwork in the original is better than the pixelart in Rebirth.
the art is definitely more charming in flash although I think Repentance went a long way towards restoring some of the SOVL
Currently the sprite I think I hate the most is Isaac himself. It looks too neatly symmetrical and something about the shading looks really off and weird. At the same time though, I understand why they wouldn't fix it, because:

If you're making a new base for Isaac it has to be 100% PERFECT. I can understand why Nicalis made it symmetrical as it's probably far easier/more modular.
Here's my attempt. I at least think Nicalis should've tried to get the colors more right at least, that would go a long way. Isaac's flesh is more peach-toned rather than the pale tone he is now.

I did acknowledge this which is why thy didn't do it. You are probably right about the modularity though.
There was some big overhaul/expansion mod that did an isaac resprite in a way that I liked but I don't remember what it's called. Your sprite is really good though.

It's a shame that McMillen's artistic output has kinda come to a crawl. I'm looking forward to Mewgenics but I feel like Isaac's rampant success has tuned him down a bit. I still bemoan Rebirth's artystyle change.
It's worth saying that Edmund is (was?) actually an excellent artist, even if he hardly draws much nowadays. The collection in here titled Cerebral Discharge has some excellent illustrations, and there's a lot of good stuff in the Art Dump folder.

My favorite item in the original was Cancer, easily. Machinegun builds (Cancer + something like Odd Mushroom -Small- or lemon pee) are absolutely kino.

It's funny because a lot of good ideas are great because they can lead to a gamebreak. Libra is a lot of fun if you get it with something like Monstro's Lung, or if you get Placebo and have good pills in your pill pool.

I've honestly grown sour on Small Rock because of the speed down. If I don't have more than 1.00 speed I probably wouldn't take it unless I'm really itching for damage. A speed down is honestly more demoralizing than a tears down is.

i love hp-based items in any game.
hp gaining/preservation item like maggys bow, wafer, and vampire charm, or items with berserker mechanics like razor blade and bloody lust are real fun to me.
also, im also very happy getting any run-defining item even if i dont even like it (anything that will change your tear mechanics- things like ludovico or tiny planet)

Don't use Guppy's Paw unless you are in the Cathedral

What will newer roguelikes have to do to standout against Isaac? Taking softlocks into account? More thoughtful item pools and synergies? More handcrafted levels with some sections spliced with RNG?
Competing with Isaac in regards to content is a large feat since it's had roughly 12 years to trial and error their way to now.
Isaac was the first (at least, as far as I know) to combine top-down real-time shooter gameplay and roguelite-ness and has had the most time to mature. Once something's been established, it's very hard, if ever, to dethrone it because anything that tries to be like it will just be compared to Isaac. If someone's got a problem with Isaac, why not just make a mod to it rather than a new game?
The only roguelite I think has stood out since is Noita.

Enter the Gungeon almost pulls it off but falls flat on its face because the developers literally balanced the fun out of the game as hard as they humanly could. All in all, Nuclear Throne stands out as the logical conclusion in ways I'm too lazy to describe because it's late.
you need ways to make every run really seem different, isaac has so many variables that can be changed or altered it's hard to have two runs feel exactly the same

Type of room no longer has any bearing on hearts that spawn from destroyed active items so you can't do this anymore

Pretty much, don't craft anything until you've cleared the floor and see if you have enough good pickups to get a guaranteed Q4. Otherwise you're using the hearts/bombs/keys to craft bad items that become good when stacked like the wiz, guillotine, boom fly, halo, etc
It only really sucks (a fricking nightmare actually) to get the timed marks (boss rush and Hush). Every other mark with T.Cain is fun and easy enough.

It's so easy to break the game using scapular and resource dropping items that I basically just cheesed T. Lost and T. Jacob by making T.Cain broken and then using click to be a worse character.

it's a trade-off, if it's a red heart character he can't have red hearts for the rest of the run, and for non-red heart characters, you now have a use for them.

The dev is quite literally a professional con artist. Apart from stealing mods and implementing them as 'free updates', he'll ban you from the forums if you bring it up. Interestingly, he outsourced the iPad version to some indian company who fricked it up and he claimed it was Apple stopping him bringing updates but somehow when he gets a bunch of morons to implement a paid mod, the mean Apple company is ok with his game now.
Not to mention the whole 'sorry guys, Xbox/Sony/Nintendo are refusing to allow it on their stores so can't update' or 'Steam is blocking me from updating the game since I have it on Apple's store'
All in all, a fun, very fun game, with mods to unfrick the unholy amount of RNG the game is designed around
