Really? I'd believe it. You can tell the Devs just loved making every single ounce of this game. There is literally nothing in this game that feels like it was forced to be there or like filler content to make it seem like more. It just feels like a purely joyous project. Wish more games were made with this approach, but I guess only Mario can be that (Pokémon could be that too if Gamefreak weren't such lazy fricking hacks that hate Pokémon)

        https://www.nintendo.com/us/whatsnew/ask-the-developer-vol-11-super-mario-bros-wonder-part-1/
        >Hayashida: Yes, I remember Mouri-san saying during the early stages of development that we shouldn't use the same game engine as in the New Super Mario Bros. series but rather create a new game engine that would serve as a foundation for future 2D Mario games. Thankfully, Tezuka-san also told us to prioritize content over schedule.

        >Tezuka: We wanted to create a game with much more to offer than ever before, so this time, we didn't set a fixed time period for development, which is usually decided before we kick off. To create something truly enjoyable, we decided to take our time and dedicate ample budget for development without having to worry about the production schedule. So at first, we only had a small group working on the development.

Pokemon fans aren't happy with Pokemon, despite sales figures. The games will always sell no matter what. Literally the biggest media franchise in the world and all. But that doesn't mean they need to maintain some intensely strict release schedule. They need to take a couple of years to fricking just catch up already. Every generation since 6 has felt like they're constantly trying to keep up because 3D development isn't something they were used to, and it still isn't. Let people complain that they won't get a Pokemon game for a single year. If it means it doesn't release as a broken mess with awful performance and terrible graphics, then I say it's worth it.

              Nintendo's basic strategy is
              >we like having staff so we're going to give everyone pay raises and benefits so you keep wanting to work here
              vs
              >great we shipped the game time to fire everyone to avoid bonuses
And then you end up with shit like Halo Infintie or Battleflield 2042 where nobody that worked on previous titles is there to get staff up to speed and there's a serious dearth of technical knowledge and you have to plug in gaps with contractors and other random studios.

              Dread is very solid.
It has some shortcomings holding it back from being truly great, but it delivers to be worthy of being put next to the other metroid games.
The normal playthrough can be quite linear, being made in a way to always lock you into the main path by closing gates behind you, but it has a few intentional skips that open up the game to be played much more freely

Actually I changed my mind, even another regular Mario Maker 3 would still be a good idea as long as they can migrate onto the current engine powering Wonder. Because MM2 has the shittiest online ever where it's implemented like a delay-based online fighting game except with four fricking people so it's impossible for it to ever be smooth. Meanwhile Wonder clearly has netcode that works properly and seems to sync on the game state instead of on inputs, so if they could get that in Mario Maker game, the online would actually fricking work.

        >Wonder
        >you guys are new, give us your fresh ideas for what you'd want to see in a Mario game

Why can't Pokémon be like this. I'll literally ask /vp/ now how they can be happy with the current state of Pokémon while Mario gets this

GameFreak is a shit dev as evidenced by how their non-pokemon games are even worse but the other half of it is the Pokemon Company makes most of its money off merch, not games. So they have to crank out these games so they have a new set of starters and legendaries and shit to slap onto plushies and t-shirts and keychains or whatever. Pokemon is on a schedule and they have to meet that schedule every few years.
Now, why does Game Freak have less staff than fricking Monolith Soft who are constantly expanding to work on Xenoblade and damn near every Nintendo EPD project? That's all on them for not hiring thousands of people or bringing in more studios for gruntwork.

Not only doing what it does on the hardware it does, but having such an unbelievable and interconnected physics engine that DOES NOT BREAK no matter what you throw at it. No weird clipping, no bug-out glitches, no melting character models, no random hard fails while using the Superhand stuff.

It just WORKS. If you can think of it, you can try it, and the game will accommodate.

It's amazing. There's absolutely nothing else like it in the world. The closest thing are sandbox builders like Beseiged or Kerbal Space Program and those are so niche and even then still have a fair amount of bugs and frickups.

Frick off, I don't care how technically impressive a game is when at a gameplay level it's uninspired and boring. I only care when it's used to make a good game, like what DOOM did for PC gaming. Hell, even within the same franchise Majora's Mask was technically impressive and used the real-time clock for some actually cool and interesting gameplay scenarios. I still haven't seen another video game with such a detailed npc schedule. Terraria does more with it's world than TOTK and Terraria can be played on an Xbox 360.

          https://www.ign.com/articles/game-developers-share-the-most-mind-blowing-inspiring-elements-of-tears-of-the-kingdom

          >"Tears of the Kingdom is overwhelmingly impressive," he says. "The bar is set so unbelievably high. Even for me, having worked in AAA for 17 years, I see that game and I'm jealous. Because clearly they got the time that they needed to make it really good."
          >When trying to pick just one element of Tears of the Kingdom that stands head-and-shoulders above the rest, our interview subjects had a hard time choosing. In fact, we got five different answers from our five different developers
          >The praise reaches a whole new level when incorporating Tears of the Kingdom's building and physics engine into its meticulously-designed open world. At EA, Mumbach worked as a producer where he was in charge of breaking development processes down, including figuring out how many people and how much time was needed for development to go smoothly. But even with that experience, he says he can't begin to imagine how things work behind Nintendo's tightly-shut doors.
          >"To make these vehicles that work the way they work with the physics, like the gliders? And the fact that you can put rockets or fans on the back of this glider, but then it's also understanding where I am standing on the glider at all times? And constantly updating the trajectory of the glider based on my little tiny stick deflection movements? That's like a whole game to me. Go make that and you win an award for making that. And that's just a little part of this game."

          >Not as in, how did Nintendo make a great game after a history of making great games. But as in, the actual game development of it, because things that you can do within Tears of the Kingdom have baffled many game developers who simply do not understand how Nintendo could do everything they’ve done

Only compared to the mass AAA slop pile, which isn't much of an achievement. I could write a shooter in ASCII and have it be better than Call of Duty and Battlefield combined, it's not exactly a high hurdle.

An actually competent dev surpasses Nintendo easily. It's just that competent devs are in short supply in this industry. if that's what you were getting at, then I agree.

It''s common knowledge that 99% of the industry is bankrupt, so praise from them is meaningless. These morons can't even figure out how to compress game sizes underneath 100 gb, so why ever link to them as if they had any merit?

It's also dishonest to imply that no other games came out this year, or that not a single one outside of Nintendo is worthy of consideration. You're purposely discarding many good games because of it.

I can't believe people keep saying this kind of bullshit when if you've ever messed even a little with physics in a game engine you would know its very straightforward and not cpu intensive at all. You could make whats described here in an afternoon in unity. For example
            >glider that rolls and pitches based on player standing point
Literally just add a torque based on where the distance between the player contact point and wing center are. Add a resisting force that is stronger the greater the wing angle. DUH.
            >you can put rockets on the back and it propels it!!!
            fricking this is just GMOD
            >Mumbach is a producer, not actually a physics producer
Holy shit duh. And the other turd theyre interviewing literally just makes retro 8bit top down games. Fricking interview someone that actually knows the subject material.

          It absolutely is.

I was running Garry's Mod on a potato 14 years ago perfectly. I am begging you Nintendo fanboys, play other video games.

Then you should be extremely familiar with how 2004-era Havok physics breaks catastrophically in complicated situations. And that's Source engine where the physics are incredibly good and Half-Life 2 is still kind of a technical masterpiece. But it still fails all the time, particularly in situations where actors interact with physics props. Which is how you get things like prop-flying.

            Anonymous

2004 havoks clip all the time because the player is not physics based. It is the kinematic. You can push chairs into the ground because the chair cant push back the player back the proper force. It's bad implementation.
In TOTK, link is mostly a physics body like everything else so this problem doesn't occur. Also notice that ultrahand can't be used to push objects. If it could, clipping and shit would happen all the time. Also notice that just about every object is a very basic primitive, like a cylinder or cube. Something more complicated like a chair with thin legs is very prone to ugly collision. TOTK is smart with its use, using small physics steps and simple, typically very large objects, and avoiding mixing kinematic movements with physics. Also very important: Ultrahand assemblies break their joints if put under enough force. If that didnt' happen, you'd certainly get shitty clipping bugginess all of the time. It's smart implementation. Though granted it does still happen occasionally, when I played it.
Idk maybe this is what counts as "technical masterpiece". To me it just seems like nintendo as usual being one of the very few large videogame companies that is actually creative.

              Anonymous

The engine can handle objects pushing objects because the magnet power in BotW did that no problem. Also in TotK you have vehicles and Zonai parts that rely on that. For example using the reverse pendulum Zonai item to make catapults only works since objects can push objects. I don't think Ultrahand doesn't do it because of clipping reasons, but because it'd be really annoying and horrible if rotating objects caused them to flip with significant force and launch stuff. Particularly when you can make giant structures and bridges.

Pikmin 4 is easily my favorite game out of 2023 and one of my favorite games of a ll time, other than the babby-mode overworld difficulty and the weird ability progression it's exactly what I wanted out of a Pikmin sequel and more. Easily my favorite out of the series. The Dandori challenges and Sage leaf trials were gaming nirvana to platinum rank. Only thing that could possibly upstage it this year is Pizza tower, when I finally get around to playing it.
Wonder is also really good but some of those special world stages are not going to be fun to replay. It's still the best 2D Mario game since World, I'm having a great time.
Tears of the kingdom was even worse than BOTW, and I'm not especially fond of BOTW

It is weird considering World is a 33 year old game. I'm considered a zoomie newbie by a lot of people here at the age of 26, and that game is seven years older than I am. The last sequel we got after World was Super Mario Land 2 in 1994, after that a ten-year hiatus until NSMB on the DS. Wario Land 1 is great but that subtitle isn't fooling me, it's not at all a Mario game. The last 2D mainline game was NSMB U, a launch title for the Wii U is 2012. Or Luigi U if you want to be generous, a decade ago in 2013. Mario Maker 1 and 2 are excellent, but they're more like sandbox tools to goof around with then they are full-blown games. Mario tends to go through some pretty big hiatuses, Mario 64 didn't get a followup for six years.

Mario Wonder is definitely a fun Mario game, and the presentation is great. As someone who has played Mario games for like 30 years, the gameplay is far too easy and bland, especially compared to something like Tropical Freeze. I wish there was more challenge gatekept at the end of the game, even the Secret World isn't that difficult and there are only a handful of levels.

Anyway, it's a great game and a great introduction of 2d mario to the younger generation, and probably fun for zoomers who grew up with new super mario bros. I hope they keep doing more like it

I don't hate that Nintendo has Mario as a widely accessible 2D platform and Retro making tough-as-nails Donkey Kong games. I haven't played Tropical Freeze but DKCR had me nearly whip my wiimote through the wall with some of the challenge levels.

Yeah I don't disagree. If you have a switch play Tropical Freeze, it's the best modern platformer other than niche indie shit.

I can't blame them for tailoring it to their audience. You and I might think it's too easy, but play online and you'll see the gormless ghosts that spawn in with you die repeatedly to basic shit almost as a rule. The difficulty level is geared to the modal moron and you can observe this in real time.

I'm genuinely surprised how fun it is to watch other morons play Mario as ghosts in real time in the background. Really enjoy helping people bad at video games. I'd more of this passive multi-player like in Wonder and Dead Stranding.

    >how can Nintendo do it?
Because they realized their cultists will buy whatever they make. They don't need ~~*outside*~~ money, which let's them make free creative decisions. Then some smart people at Nintendo realized that good games are actually cheaper than shit games (HYENAS cost $100 mil before being scrapped) so it's a win win. If they maintain faith by making some good games, it will insulate them against the invariable bad games.

Nintendo fans *are* cultists. But they are members of a cult that serves non-poisoned kool-aid more often than not

So far the game is great, my only complaint is what the ACTUAL frick were they thinking with the Petal Isles special level where you're a Goomba? What were they THINKING when the most difficult and inconsistent part is right at the very end of the level you have no way of rushing through?

      Anonymous

Might be my favorite level in the game. Wish there were more actual 5 star difficulty levels. I remember taking like an hour or so to beat the level where it switches block colors to the beat and thinking this game would have kino difficult levels, but nothing else even came close to satisfying that besides the goomba level. I know I was hoping the whole time they were gonna have a secret kino 6 star difficulty level.

        Anonymous

I like difficulty, but I hated the pacing. There was no way to speed through the level. "Climb to the beat" was even harder but I liked that one a lot more for at least being fast, the Goomba one just bored me.

          Anonymous

          >I like difficulty, but I hated the pacing.
a fair take, i actually disagree with you that the last part was the most difficult but i'm saying that because i did it once and once only - if it's inconsistent like you're saying i can see how the pacing of that level would be annoying. regardless i just wanted to say that i really wish there was more levels that were as difficult as those two, they feel like the hardest the game ever gets which is a bit disappointing considering how early they are.

            Anonymous

it's both relieving and dissapointing the Goomba challenge and Climb to the beat were the hardest. The Second Piranha plant parade stage was really tough, but not nearly as much as the other two. Haven't played through the whole game yet, just taking time and enjoying my retail copy. I will say, it's very cozy.

Nah it's cool, I figured not much of the game would be harder considering I'm not seeing people crying in rage about the special world in the catalog like they were when Mario 3D world was rereleased and people were having to do the absolute BULLSHIT puzzle box challenge marathon and Champion's road world crown stages all over again

                Anonymous

Yeah Champion's Road took me like, four hours over two days or something to beat. The final final level in Wonder is like 30 minutes to an hour.

Champion's road and the puzzle box gauntlet were beyond cruel, I don't know if I want want to play 3D world to completion again. Pretty much every other Mario game I 100% multiple times without issue, only one I didn't was Lost levels

It will win shit like "best family game" but it's impossible for it to win GotY no matter how good the game is. Because the jury are "big boys" and they find the game too childish to win their "big boy" awards.

    >How does Nintendo do it, Ganker?
While their A team are off doing r&d for the next zelda/mario odyssey sequel, the b team put together lesser mario games (like wonder, "new" super mario, 3D world etc). They are only given permission by the producer to use assets left over from old wii and wiiu games.
They stitch these leftover parts together as cheaply as possible and shit a game out to market regularly.
The brand recognition alone is enough to drive sales and reviews through the roof and keeps nintendo going for years in between their actual real releases, which these days only happen once every 5 years.

I didn't care for Mario Maker that much, never bothered to try nsmb, didn't really like world at all so I barely played it
1 and 3 are the only ones I played a decent amount but I never got that far and didn't care for them much either

They made Wonder specifically because they were trying to have a game that couldn't just be made in Mario Maker.
It'd be funny if they just kept doing that and folding the previous game into new Mario Maker installments. Like if they just keep making their own jobs harder.

Neat. But your wording doesn't fit the articles narrative.
Rather than you saying they didn't want something that could be slapped into mario maker. It's that they believed they could make something fresh that mario maker has not provided.

Funny part is in the end while that was their aim, it wasn't actually necessary. NSMBU Deluxe's port sold 16m which is double what Super Mario Maker 2 did.

Regular 2D Mario is so popular that Super Mario Maker having its style doesn't actually replace the demand for it. They could make Super Mario Maker 3 with Wonder's style, then put out a Wonder 2, and Wonder 2 probably wouldn't have any difficulty selling.

It makes the game more forgiving but also a lot of fun to see others in the same levels as you and to lend a helping hand. It's pretty cute when you see the same player fricking up again and again and you linger around to help them.

Co-oping the last couple of really hard levels with strangers is a cool experience. You get a bit of that Journey feeling except the game is actually challenging. It was cute when playing the final final level, there was one other person who was staying in after like a dozen attempts and would wait around for me at checkpoint flags if we both died and we cleared the level together.

the type of multiplayer it has is something I never even knew I wanted
it's completely unobtrusive but I still get to feel like I'm playing the game with other people and it feels a lot less lonely
I wish there were more ways to interact though, or at least a separate mode with more traditional multiplayer if I wanted that but just being able to play the game with other people around feels nice

      You underestimate brand power

Mario will never really be compared in any capacity to other games, even other platformers, simply because it's fricking Mario.
Same thing with Zelda and Pokemon. They don't really get compared with anything else, Zelda maybe with Fromsoft games but that's it.

The cult of brand is just that strong.

        Anonymous

Zelda picks up a few comparisons, but most AAA devs feel like they're "too good" for the Zelda formula or something.

Darksiders and Okami were both hugely influenced by Zelda games.

          Anonymous

Okamis a good example since it did actually get compared favorably to Zelda back in the day but I think that got stomped when BotW came out. No one is really ever going to say "yeah Okami is way better than Zelda" nowadays and especially since Okami isn't part of a larger series/canon that's persisted into the modern era in the way "From soulslikes" are.
Darksiders, no lol. Tendies don't even know what that is, Chuggaconroy never made an LP of that highly obscure gem of a game not from their childhoods.
Note I'm not talking about "game with big dungeons where you unlock abilities to go further" I just mean any action adventure game period. Nor any RPG to Pokemon or any platformer to Pokemon.

            Anonymous

There have been a few indie games that try to borrow heavily from BotW. Praey to the Gods and Sable come to mind. No AAA game will even encroach on nuZelda's territory though or even risk comparing themselves to it because it exposes how dated and badly developed they are.

Ubisoft made that one game that was directly trying to be BotW.

                Anonymous

No, Sony makes Horizon, and that's not really trying to be BotW, it's just generic open world third person whatever.
I was thinking of Fenyx Rising or something? Some forgotten Ubisoft title that was very clearly ripping off BotW.

And Zelda was influenced by Ultima and Hydlide.

The same people that prefered old Zeldas over BOTW could perfectly prefer Okami.
Here's the thing with tendies: even if they enjoyed Okami more than Zelda... they wouldn't admit it because of console wars and fanatism.

Skyward Sword was universally panned, which led to the formula being ditched altogether for BOTW. Everyone loves it, but I don't much care for it personally, which is very much a minority opinion.

Skyward Sword's reception is nutty. Critics went absolutely bonkers over it, Fanboys couldn't stop slurping it off because it added a ton of heckin' epic lore, and then pretty much everybody else despised it. The common take was motion controls everywhere sucked, fanboys dismissed it saying it worked fine, the more nuanced take was that the linearity, pacing and backtracking were awful, which also just led to a bunch of fanboys saying they're just made about Fi, then when the remake fixed both Fi and the shit controls and people still realized it was a shit game is when the fanboys finally calmed down and accepted it's the worst console Zelda.

I couldn't even play it because the motion controls weren't being read properly for me. It took hours to land on the target in the falling tutorial.

I lost over 100 lives on the last special world stage. Today I decided to retry it and died maybe twice before finishing it.

Those 100 times dying really got me to memorize the level.

Probably one of the most toxic video games in recent years. Bullying 5 year olds who die and try to touch you to revive by dodging them and taunting them with emotes is way too satisfying.

They actually try to make good games, as opposed to political pandering TV drama refuse with minimal video game mechanics thrown on top with disgust and disdain for the medium. It's remarkable what you can achieve when you actually try!

Wonder is good and all, but I think Nintendo should have been a little more daring with its design. But that's ok, it's a good game (especially if you play for free on the emulator).
One thing I think Nintendo should do now is release updates with content like it does with games like Splatoon, Mario Maker, etc. This helps people stay interested in the game for longer.
Imagine if every 3 or 4 months they released an update with new levels spread around the world for you to search for...

It's better because it's more creative. A true piece of art where you can really not find any fault. TOTK and BG3, while impressive, feel like "regular" games compared to it

            Anonymous

            How?
Mario is the literal definition of regular game.
Nintendo won't give you a wage for being a homosexual for them

Wonder Seeds. Literally every single level has a creative twist that completely throws the Mario formula on its head and surprises you in a way you can't even imagine. You get this for your entire playthrough. It's truly an amazing experience and I don't think there has ever been a game as enjoyable to play through as this game. Even TOTK and BG3 had moments when the game felt more like work to complete, but Wonder is a true fun experience through and through. You can only be impressed by the experience delivered by it.

TotK is all bells-and-whistles with little substance in a barren reused survival-crafter BotW map, Mario Wonder is straightforward 2D Mario but with effort and new ideas in every goddamn corner. I won't say there's nothing good about nuZelda or that the Gmod powers are without lots of experimentation, but as a game it still loses to Mario, hell even the recent 2D Metroids too.

What's the fricking point? I think Call of Duty and Fifa fricking suck, so I don't even play them. I'm not going to pretend we should be some toxic-positivity circlejerk, there's shitty games I like to gripe about like Tears of the Kingdom but what level of autism has you play every single major release from a company just to complain about every major release? Wouldn't it be more productive to find games you like so you can have fun with them? I can always have fun in a Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Pikmin, or Killer7 thread.

Ummm but Mario is for KIDS, sweetie. troony-Man 2 is for REAL ADULTS like me. BTW are any of my fellow adults who are adulting going to see The Marvels?. I'm so HYPED for it!.

Yeah I don't disagree. If you have a switch play Tropical Freeze, it's the best modern platformer other than niche indie shit.
