I have never seen anyone explain why it's bad outside of being severely overrated due to the le ebin plot twist and randian stuff.
And yes, BS2 is superior in every aspect and BSI is shit

It's not "bad". It's just a huge disappointment coming from both System Shock 2 + knowing how the Alpha version was meant to be.
tl;dr: the game was dumbed down, a lot, for the Xbox consolikids of the late-00s.
what was the alpha version?
The place was meant to be a old undersea Nazi mega bunker where experiments were being done on these huge parasitic insects, that had gotten out and made human-insectoid hybrids that haunt the base.

The game was meant to have much more focus on Bio-engineering and body alteration. Some stuff did survive, like the BEE ARM splice, but obviously it's all different beast now.
Darker visuals and story, less silly Rick Morty flair, larger more open world, real time teleportation
It's alright.
generic console shooter that got overhyped because people think having voice logs = immersive sim
>immersive sim
oh my god did he just use a word that describes a specific thing Black personman im going insane
I think the game is amazing, idc what contrarian /v thinks. they don't decide the games I like.
those mini puzzles when hacking things are horrible
>BS2 is superior in every aspec
Having played through them both recently, I think BS2 relies too heavily on hitscan enemies. Not that it matters with how you can upgrade the drill in the end. And Sophia Lamb is a boring retread of the what they were already doing with Fontaine and Ryan.
I liked Lamb because I like villains who do all sorts of horrible vile acts without giving a shit.
At the very least she's not Comstock
BS2 is the definition of mid and it's a meme to say it's good. No idea why people started thinking that.
Its just System Shock 2 again but with lobotomized map design for console gays and respawn tubes to erase all challenge
It was graphically impressive both aesthetically and technical side.
If you came into it without playing system shock and without giving a shit about the story and philosophy it was a good shooter with satisfying weapons and like you could shoot a revolver with one hand and lightning from the other.
for sure, art design is some of the best ever in vidya, it still looks stunning
>BS2 is superior
>BSI is shit
It's true
BSI is by far the worst from a gameplay perspective. I don't care if it isn't realistic that someone can carry 8 weapons with them, the whole two weapons at a time was pure cancer to play. Especially with how they tried to keep the same kind of upgrade system where you didn't know if you would even see the gun you want to use and upgrade at that part of the game. I'm sure some marketing shit head had some focus group that said they liked Halo and decided to neuter the gameplay late into development because it just doesn't feel right compared to the previous two games.
it's a good game, I do like it, outside of the obvious israeliness* of it all. But it's obviously dumbed down from System Shock 2

You haven't been browsing here long then. Some of the complaints are warranted but the game is still superb overall and imo among the best video games ever made.
It's not a comprehensive reason, but I think a big part of it is how you view its placement and relation to its spiritual predecessors and sucessors.
If you're a pessimist, it was the death-knoll of the immersive sim: being a console exclusive on launch, removing inventory management, certain RPG elements, and substantially lowering the difficulty to make it more accessible. Its critical success said to the industry to move further away from the older design philosophy and make imsims more like popular shooters, which is why we've only gotten a few great ones in the 16 years since.
If you're an optimist, it was a welcome return of immersive sim design elements when they had become less popular. Multiple ammo types, research and hacking mechanics, multiple gameplay styles/builds were packaged up in a game with widespread appeal that introduced seventh-generation console players to something that was previously a PC-exclusive niche, ensuring its survival. Its critical success said to the industry that players still enjoyed more traditional single-player RPG-hybrids and not everything had to be Halo/CoD/Gears of War to make money. Which is why we've gotten any in the 16 years since.
It's fine. Just not as smart as homosexuals say it is. I like the world and old timey design everything has. it's just not that engaging to play. a pretty generic shooter, if you ask me. the second game feels WAY better to play, since you can use guns and plasmids at the same time and drill people's faces off.
>it's just not that engaging to play. a pretty generic shooter, if you ask me.
I've found that the game is what you make of it in this regard. The same could be said of SS2 if you just stack points in Standard Weapons/Repair/Modify.
One thing I like to do in BioShock 1 is unbind the medkit key. Healing has to be done through Gene Tonics, food, hacking, or the health stations, and it completely changes the combat when you can't trade hits in conventional firefights anymore.
I think the first has a better story but BS2 is more enjoyable to actually play.
Was fine but felt very xbox 360'd which was common at the time and often unfortunate.
This game was so boring i cant force myself to finish it.
Its incredibly easy and i really didnt care for what they were doing with the story at all.
>takes control away from the player CONSTANTLY to watch cutscenes
>extremely linear, insultingly so
>gunplay feels like absolute garbage
