And it was universally accepted that Shepard is a dude wearing Mark Vanderloo's face. All the fan videos and machinimas all had male Shepard with Vanderloo's face. It wasn't even a "man vs woman" thing, people just instinctually recognized that Shepard is that guy.
It took until ME3 for female Shepard to even get her own unique face (which was still just a mismash of stock features rather than anyone's face being scanned). For the longest time femShep also had the exact same walking/running animations as male Shepard and it looked ridiculous for her, because those animations were made for a taller bigger skeleton with a more musclebound silhouette. And the cutscenes were clearly made with male Shepard in mind, it's obvious in that Garrus scene where the fem Shep version just looks like she's trying to flash her crotch to him.
I know why Bioware are trying to rewrite history and pretend it was always female Shepard, but I was there and I know it's bullshit so it's not gonna work on me or anyone I know.
