the level design is literally just poorly integrated assets that look out of place haphazardly placed around small rooms/zones. half-life was like 75% progressing forward and 25% solving a room, and when you were solving a room it didn't feel like "puzzle time". the missile silo doesn't feel like "puzzle time," even though the objective is to go around the room and click buttons, and the assets didn't look out of place.
but then you get to xen in black mesa and it's like 75% puzzle time and 25% boss fights + escapes. and the boss fights & escapes are also basically just puzzle time. nobody wants to jump around a tree clicking the 3 magic tree buttons or to start the magic portal by solving the 3 puzzles in the mining room in order to start the magic laser. it was such a jarring departure from the intended half-life level design.
gonarch was cool though, I really liked the idea of being chased by him rather than chasing him. he was much more interesting in black mesa and I liked that he got more screen time.
I'm tired and asked the question like a moron. Last I played the game a year ago the performance was weirdly unstable and would go from 165fps to 80 to 120 yo 90 to 180, you get the idea...
i played it 3 months ago and it ran fine but i do remember in xen specifically it would drop below 60 sometimes
i turned down either shadows or something else that had to do with the lighting to medium and that fixed it, everytrhing else was maxed out still
2nd this
I had to mess with a bunch of individual combos or shadow settings to optimize xen esp
frame generation now had bumped the performance on a lot of single player games tho
I checked the patch notes and its just shit nobody cares about >LE PERFORMANCE LE UI LE BUG FIXING LE DSO FX UI SOMETHING LIGHTNING LE HASDIAHU
Why are you making shit up?
did you fix xen or is it still complete dogshit (even worse than the original somehow)
what makes you think that

I'd prefer the latter..
yes
you can enable "alternative xen" upon game startup and it's completely new levels aside from the gonarch fight and final boss
Oh that's pretty based of them. It's due a replay anyway.
isreal?
what?
I swear you people literally just say the wrong opinion to look cool, I wonder if there's a word for that...
Yeah but why does it run so poorly

the update fixes performance

Fog and lighting is completely broken in my machine
Game is unplayable
i don't play fanmade slop
Before the thread dies I just wanna say
Black Mesa > Half Life 1
+1
You're fricking correct anon, well done
I should replay this sometime but goddamn Xen drags on and I don't even dislike Xen in the original
Opinion: they should have added more combat to xen
>try out MMod
>see this
