Yes, the animation and general visual aesthetic improved tremendously between the two shows. The fighting is also a lot cooler because they do more than just slice people down the shoulder. It's still a kids' anime though, but I love it for the nostalgia.

The older Captains having a multi-form Bankai with little drawback makes sense given their years of experience and training, while it's perfectly in line for Hitsugaya, Renji, Rukia and Ikkaku to have clunky Bankais with drawbacks, even Hollow Ichigo laughed and said Ichigo's body was struggling to cope with the strain of the Bankai the first time he used it.
Rewatching the show I see it, in a lot of ways, went for a lot shorter of a time than other shonens, we see less asspulls for "Have to be stronger because it's the new arc." We are introduced to all soul reapers in arc 2, we get to see them both job and not job against espada in arc 3, so it's natural. It's been a while since I saw the fullbring arc, but I feel like a lot of soul reapers didn't participate because there were like six or seven fullbringers and his friends fought most of them. So because it's been ten IRL years and a new are we get to see Rukia "No but my cold is stronger now," and Byakuya's "No my senbonzakura is just sharper each arc," and Mayuri "Lol I'm just smarter and can manipulate essentially time with heckin' science." I remember in the espada arc we see some cool shit where the lieutenants get a fricking crazily well written power up where they actually have limiters on so they don't fry living humans around them so they just take them off. >TL:DR Shounens are lazily written because the Japanese are a placid audience. Unironically I like Boku no Hero because it has good writing.
