The only games he was actually in charge of was Bayonetta, Wonderful 101, and Sol Cresta. Everything else is him just supervising.

Project GG was supposed to be his but it probably got cancelled and that's why he left.

Forgive me for wanting the romance to be developed instead of the story fricking around with repetitive basic b***h multiverse jumps for 90% of the duration while cramming the payoff for non-existent buildup at the very end. They managed to write a story where absolutely everyone is underdeveloped, from Jeanne who goes on a sidequest and gets killed like a moron, to Viola who gets shafted despite being set up as the new main character, to Luka who gets one short scene being himself before turning into the most obvious "mysterious" action game rival imaginable, to every Bayonetta/Rosa/Jeanne from the multiverse who only exist to die and give the main Bayo their demons, to the main Bayo who barely has a reaction to the above and doesn't get decent interactions with anyone including her love interest, her daughter and the villain.

        https://www.gematsu.com/2023/08/granblue-fantasy-relink-and-versus-rising-interview-with-tetsuya-fukuhara-and-yasuyuki-kaji

        >Gematsu: Granblue Fantasy: Relink was announced in 2016 and faced numerous delays, even switching developers from PlatinumGames to Cygames Osaka. Can you guys talk a little bit about that long period of development and what it was like taking over full development from PlatinumGames?

Tetsuya Fukuhara, Granblue Fantasy General Director: "As far as working in PlatinumGames in the beginning, there were contracts that were ending and organizational things that needed to be reconstructed, so the fact that we stopped development with PlatinumGames was not negative at all. There was no falling out or anything of the sort. It was more scheduling that was the issue. As the game began to expand, and the volume of content that we started to put into the game became more and more, we decided that's an amount that Cygames should be handling on its own, as PlatinumGames had other games on their docket to start preparing for. So with their schedule in mind, we took over development at Cygames Osaka. And originally, the team at Cygames Osaka didn't have enough organizational strength or numbers to really support a game of this level, so we really had to start from the beginning—getting the necessary structure together to really get the development of a game like this off of the ground."

          Anonymous

We can't say for sure if there was truly a falling out. We gotta remember that Platinum and Cygames were also working on a new mobile game together, but after they got the boot from Granblue Relink that game just stopped recieving updates.
Maybe in a few years a new interview will give more insight on what happened at Cygames that made them almost redo the whole game while keeping Platinum games combat.

            Anonymous

even if that interview is just some corpo doublespeak it sounds like Cygames just decided it was more valuable to them to build up some in-house devs for larger games instead of continuing to hire outside studios for their IPs

            Anonymous

The whole reason platinum exists was to make their own shit and be free of working on other peoples IP. It's not a surprise that company with that ethos would be flaky and constantly trying to shift their time and energy away from mercenary work. The problem is kamiya kept fricking up and wasting time and resources on vaporware, thats probably why he just gave up, platinum will probably go back to doing nier, and MGR tier mercenary work with the odd original release.

I’m guessing he wanted to keep making really wacky shit but with the way PG has been on the verge of bankruptcy I’m guessing the executives said no.

Yeah, he probably left because Platinum was getting too corporate, working on shit like live service games and mobile shit, and not enough resources for his own project.

        > and not enough resources for his own project.
And for good reason. Wonderful 101 was his last project and that sold insanely bad. Like I mean even the Remaster of the game for the Switch failed to break the top 30 in Japan of the week it came out (it sold below a 1000). Not wanting to lose money and sink your company doesn't mean the company wants to become corporate.

          Anonymous

That's something I've never been able to understand. The game was great, in my opinion anyway, so why did it sell so terribly? Surely there's something terribly wrong with it, but I can't figure out what.

            Anonymous

            1. Maybe it just wasn't great and you have the extreme minority opinion shared by a select few.
            2. Maybe it was great but all the people who wanted to play it already did and it doesn't have enough replay value to move remaster copies.
            3. Maybe it was great but is primarily appealing to an audience that normally wouldn't touch Nintendo content at all, walled garden and everything, and so it only reached out to a tiny intersection of people who did touch Nintendo hardware. Then the remaster issue may be explained away as a marketing problem.

Number 2 is the answer. People who wanted it already bought it on Wii U and the remaster didn't feature anything to justify double dipping. It also ended up competing with its own Wii U version, which of course was cheaper.

Even Nintendo themselves understood the necessity to entice people with new content which is why their Wii U ports almost universally have extra content added onto the package.

all executives think they can just shit out an infinite money game, not understanding that the reason a game becomes an infinite money machine is because it's the only game people put serious money into

            >very vague, up her own ass about being Bayo, calls for a boycott, moronic call to spend that $60 on charity or something
            >Bunch of upset, Kamiya gets dogpiled
            >Kamiya replies "Sad and deplorable... BEWARE OF MY RULES"
            >Platinum makes a retort that shoots down her claims

            >Everyone quickly distances themselves from Taylor, Kamiya vindicated

Coincidentally the "PAY VA'S WHAT THEY'RE FRICKING WORTH" movement carries on right after that, even though the debacle highlighted that despite being paid "just a few thousand dollars", the typical union VA is getting $400~ an hour, less than a week of talking into a mic for a single role.

Why would you get in an union to get less money?

The VA union is a mafia. You join them or they will block you from 99% of work opportunities because they push their union VAs into the roles first.
The union forces fixed rates that are more than the VAs deserve, but less than they need, so all the big union VAs' real job is promoting themselves at cons for fans to give them money directly. The union financially kneecaps you as a means to keep everyone in line paying them regular dues.
Only Hollywood stars have the luxury of big money deals, not a one-role chump like Hellena Taylor.

She did not get less money for being in an union, Union set the minimum. You can get more. problem is, she was asking an hourly Rate equal of that of a CEO.

She claimed Platinum was being greedy by offering her just several fold of Union standard, when "Bayonetta was a super money printing franchise" (Bayonetta is a cult game, not a popular game)

There's something about japanese culture which drives directors and producers to present themselves as an eccentric person. Yoshi P has a kpop haircut and wears big rings on each of his fingers, Nagoshi turned himself into an IRL yakuza and Yoko Taro is Yoko Taro. Even Nintendo producers are starting to become eccentric.

Yes, having 3 unique characters is better than having 2 unfinished ones.
Yes, having unique bosses for all of them is better than fight only 4 of them 3 times.
Yes, having unique maps for every missions without separate sections is better than the same rooms being reused ad nausem.
Yes, having enemies that are designed for all 3 characters is better than if they were designed for 1 of 2.
Yes, having a steady supply of character progression for both Dante and Nero is better than having frick all for both.
Yes, having a story that involves all 3 characters, even on the levels, and pays off perfectly at the end is better than having Dante do nothing and then Nero having a nap.
Yes, having the environments be destroyed by the demon tree and always having it as par of the far-off landscape is better than basically going "a wizard did it" for all the shitty gimmick sections that look and play stupid.
Yes, having Nico and Griffon as fun sidecharacters is better than having the cardboard cut-outs of the Order and Kyrie is much better reassuring Nero than as a damsel in distress.
Yes, all characters sharing their orbs is better than the fricking proud soul system.
                Yes, the music is better.
Yes, the atmosphere is good, if optional.
                Yes, the game looks great.
Yes, it's the best action game of all time.

I don't think that really matters because Nintendo would want them to help with a potential Astral Chain 2. Also Nintendo still owns Wonderful 101, they're just allowing Platinum to port it to other systems.

        Anonymous

Even if nintendo got platinum back it means that platinum makes significantly less money from it. They don't get a chunk of the pure profits unless nintendo gives them a bonus

Stability is better if you can't sustain yourself, see Retro Studios which would've closed five years ago were they not on Nintendo's payroll despite delivering frick-all for a decade. Also Platinum doesn't own the rights to any of their biggest games nor did they publish them, so they're constantly at risk even if they put out relatively successful games. They even mentioned the breakout success of Nier Automata saved them.

For me, it's Bayonetta 3. The moment I saw demon slave I knew it was going to be shit. And I was right. Kamiya needs a tard wrangler, there is a reason why his best games were low budget games without expensive cutscene set pieces. Because they had to rely on combat mechanics and combat set pieces to make them interesting and fun. Bayo 3 is full of cutscene set pieces and has the most minigames in a P* game after W101.
      >inb4 what's the difference between gameplay set piece and cutscene set piece
      Gameplay set piece example:
Bayo 1 introduces walking on the walls and wants you to fight against several flying enemies that way. You still use Bayonetta's combat mechanics, game doesn't take that away from you.
      Cutscene set piece:
Riding Phantom and web slinging accross a big city. You don't use Bayonetta's combat mechanics, game takes you away from gameplay.

I'm still confused about what the hell exactly Scalebound was meant to be. Okay fine, the core was an Ubisoft template open-world with some RPG elements, but then on top of that you had DMC/Bayo combat with a big AI dragon plus multiplayer dungeons that'd turn into Panzer Dragoon or something? Sounds like about three games forced into one - a big mess.

They kept citing Monster Hunter as an influence during promo interviews, but I really don't know how that would work with DMC-style combat and then on top of that you have the big dragon following you about. I agree with you honestly, Scalebound sounded like a bunch of good ideas thrown into a blender to create something unpalatable.

Didn't last game make it essentially so bayo is straight in all timelines? How would you even retcon that?

          Anonymous

By just retconning it. Bayo 3 is a stupid multiverse plot, so a dumb retcon with very little actual explanation wouldn’t even be so bad. If they’re gonna make Luka her one true love, maybe they could actually give the two more genuine screentime together instead of making Luka into a Gary Stu.

          Anonymous

She’s tied to Luka via her story with Lukaon in Origins, so while nothing’s explicitly said, there is an implied great force that draws the two of them together. Strangely, even 2 may have been hinting at something like this given that Luka seems to run across Bayonetta by chance in that game given his dialogue when he sees her.

They’re still obscenely fun to play, but it feels like there will always be some insane unrelated controversy that taints people’s perception of the series…

Yes, that is indeed the case and intentional one. Both W101 and the cancelled Scalebound were financial sinkholes for the company and the best way to deal with Kamiya was to place him in a position where he wasn't intrusive to the development of games.

Kamiya and all the games "from the creators of Diablo!!" are the reason why I don't trust game developer/designer/whatever credentials. It doesn't mean shit if you made a good game in the past, every single time I see a game come out with some bullshit like "from the creator of x/y/z" it's always shit. Just because Kamiya made some good games over a decae ago doesn't mean he'll make a single thing worth playing in the future. His name, along with everyone else's in this industry, means literally nothing.

      Anonymous

Well that's ultimately due to the fact that videogames are created by a team of talented individuals who rely on each others strengths to compensate for each of their weaknesses. Capcom had good management skills of assembling teams of talented individuals with deadlines. Once many of these dudes left Capcom, it became clear that Capcom was one of the major reasons of success.

Nice schizo theory, but no. He left because he was not in a creative position since Scalebound's cancellation almost 7 years ago. A "supervisor" role is a position where you're basically in a passive position and not in a critical one. Since Kamiya was a creative person with ambition, this frustrated the shit out of him.

    It's multiple things:
    >Platinum becoming corporate and wanting to make live service games.
    >Him not being in creative position for years.
    >CAPOM, the studio he left because it went to shit, is now insanely successful and makes a hit after hit (whether you think their games are good and deserve it, doesn't matter), while Platinum deteriorates and just recently they got mogged by Itsuno with DMC5 when they made Bayo 3 (good game, but not as good)
    >Working with westerners who try to censor shit he makes in games.
    >Probably getting old and burned out and wants to make a game before he completely retires like Mikami.

they can if the assets are cheep but stylish. the problem companies have with live service games is not having the work force to pump out content fast enough or when they do have the workers the game has a ugly artstyle like knockout city or rumbleversus.
