Aria of Sorrow is the best Igavania bar none. Symphony is simply mid tier, and Dawn is among the worst. Super Metroid is better than all three.

My point is that they also reward exploration - you know, the main aspect of a metroidvania. Dawn barely does it at all and everything is put into grinding souls instead.
Adding onto this - SotN and AoS will introduce new enemies in newer places. You find new enemies by exploring, and these new enemies will also have new, potentially better items and random drops along with them. Thus, finding a new enemy in itself becomes a reward for exploring.
Dawn's soul leveling is absolutely antithetical to this design. Leveling up your souls is probably the best way to improve Soma's abilities overall, simply because a max level soul is better than most lv.1 souls, and because those same souls can be invested into weapons as well. But the way it works completely discourages exploration. Instances of an enemy tend to be confined to one specific area, so if you want to improve that enemy's soul, you need to STAY in that area and GRIND. Discovering a new enemy is now much less of a potential reward because if it drops a soul, that new enemy's lv.1 soul is almost guaranteed to be weaker than the leveled up soul that you're already using right now. You need to stick around and grind that new enemy's soul too, in order to find out if it's actually an improvement. Sure the other games had grinding but multiplying that grinding 10x is just miserable. The soul level mechanic is just shit.

That's only the last tier of a weapon type, you still need to craft all the tiers below that and you also lose the boss soul in the process.

all of them except CotM and OoE have an alternate Belmont mode
actually my bad, now that i think of it, CotM already has subweapons, and an entire alternate mode that specifically makes subweapons more powerful and adds a homing property to daggers

i got to the second-to-last level of this and uninstalled
and i finished ix2.
bloodstained fricking sucks though. the only good thing it has going for it is the ridiculously good ost and cool character style. I fricking hate all those portraits with the financial backers and that big dig head enemy like you wouldnt believe. so fricking stupid it hurts.
Hollow Knight is way better than either of them.
