Theres dozens of these in every stage to the point that if you did a normal 120 star playthrough and NEVER had this happen at least one time you are insanely lucky.

I don't get why its such a huge surprise to people that some of the first 3D games that were drawing traingles were held together with duct tape and good wishes, people don't generally get it right the first time.

At the time no one watched multi hour documentaries on how walls work and so no one knew or cared that there were issues with the collision detection. This shit will only frick you over once in a casual run if you're unlucky and you probably wouldn't have even thought anything of it.

You can divide them into three types

      >invisible walls you will never encounter unless you look for them
      >invisible walls that you might encounter but you will be at worst temporarily inconvenienced by
      >invisible walls that just fricking kill you while playing normally

Most of the insta-death walls are in the later levels so anyone that isn't going for 100% could dodge them simply out of expedience

Fair, but me linking you the video is.
          An actual QRD is
          >There's floors, walls, and ceilings. The angle of the triangles determines the types.
          >ceiling extend infinitely upward unless stopped by a floor. Walls won't stop ceilings, only Mario. 99% of ceilings in the game are blocked by floors and work fine, but that 1% is quite troublesome
          >the ceiling leakage can be caused by a lot of things. Messy floor triangle placement is the most common, but it can also be moving platforms doing weird things, weird floor priority to determine floor height, or buggy seams
          >some are worse than others. Some are literally a couple of units in abjectly worthless spots you have to go out of your way to hit. Some are complete messes and make entire areas speedrun nightmares. TTM and TTC are especially bad.

      Anonymous

sm64 is riddled with invisible walls, most of which are actually exposed ceiling hitboxes (which extend upwards until they hit something) or out of bounds hitboxes. in either case you can't see it, but they are visualized in the image. they are pretty hard to actually hit because they are very small and you will simply go through them at most any speed, but it can happen every now and then

      Anonymous

      >In order to make you unable to go "inside" a platform, devs made it so that the "ceiling" of its lower part (think of it as bottom of a barrel) has collision going infinitely upwards, until it meets another "floor" (in the barrel example, cover it up with a lid)
      >due to a combination of negligence, coordinate rounding issues, and primitive tools the devs had to work with, tops of these mushrooms aren't perfectly aligned with their bottoms, leading to a lot of holes for the collision hitbox to leak through
      >as a player, you have no idea these exist because actual 3D model of the mushroom has nothing to do with collision triangles
      >if you try approaching this mushroom from any of the walled sides while not being fast enough, or from unlucky distance, you will bump into these walls and fall to your death

Pannenkek's autism hyperfixated itself to Mario 64, but it's not the good kind of autism due to his whole inane half a-press speedrun shit. Look at Kaze for the good kind of hyperfixated autism, as you both learn practical things from his videos as well have tons of amazing romhacks to play that he puts out.

The invisible walls are mainly caused by the 16-bit integers though

Yeah, by rounding floating points due to the fact they take more computational power to process.

      Anonymous

They can be very useful but I think they're overused.
I like languages that have rational numbers built-in. Some went all-in and the basic divide operator returns rationals. It's slower but I think it's a good default. If you want speed you figure out what it should do instead and ask for it explicitly.
But you can't just use rationals for everything. It's slower and the size of the denominator can just grow out of control. You have imprecision and numerical stability issues with floats, but automatically trimming your numbers also solves a lot of issues and it has to be done one way or another when you don't want unlimited precision to build up. For scientific/engineering calculations they always made sense.
