A lot of games look neat when the best of the best are playing, see fighting games for a great example, but sadly games like this just have people button mashing nost of the time and is why people hate it as they never got good
Mashing will get you stale combo points and on Hard and higher you will have to perfect parry with sound cues in between different combo strings to avoid doing stale strings. The biggest thing is you can avoid a lot of the game with supers and using the right string of assists with hard hitting moves you unlock later.
Once you meet the samurais, you can't really go full Action Game flow chart on them due to armor and how they force rhythm elements on you.
All that, plus being on the beat encourages damage multipliers and score means you can't just face roll through challenging modes.

hi-five rush or whatever its called was made by a small developer studio that sold itself to bethesda to raise capital, which in turn is one of three of microsoft's gaming studio holding companys (blizzard, activision, bethesda), and microsoft decided to release it day 1 to gamepass as part of their console strategy. Their is no profit goal, bethesda will use some other metric to judge the developers, like player count or attention in the hobby, and at the very least I imagine will have them develop something else since it received enough attention to be known

I like that certain characters do more damage to/stun certain enemies, but Z shield and fire are fricking obnoxious. Barrier did it right: it doesn't stop you from keeping your combo going if you engage, but you're doing no damage. Z shield should act like barrier, barrier should do minor enemy damage but drain your meter rapidly, and fire should do a lot of damage to Chai per hit instead of making him stop.

It is not a fricking rhythm game, it's a character action/hack n slash game with bonuses for attacking on-beat.

It's the best kind of rhythm game. One that's action AND story. It's not just endless games like Osu or Muse Dash where it's all about the score and getting perfects. It's about hitting shit to the rhythm, having fun while doing it and enjoying a story and characters while it unfolds.
Shit like Hi-Fi Rush barely get made anymore and it's fantastic when they do. Last game that was like that I can think of was probably Mad Rat Dead and before that probably Rhythm Thief or Harmoknight.

Personally, I just enjoy having games that have an ending to work towards. I feel there aren't a lot like Hi Fi Rush out there with unique gameplay (admittedly, a beat em up with rhythm elements), entertaining characters and an okay story.
I'll admit that it doesn't have to have an story honestly. I think Rhythm Heaven is a fantastic game and that's like 50 Rhythm Games in a row, but each of them are unique or have a spin on stuff you've done before to keep it fresh and interesting.
I'm just not a fan of games where the entire premise is that it has over 500+ songs, the gameplay doesn't evolve after the first time you've played it and your entire goal is to just get better and better at it. I feel that's what a majority of rhythm games are about.

Personal taste aside, Chai consistently puts himself in harm's way to help others, and throughout the game he grows in maturity, becoming a capable leader and supportive friend. The story acknowledges his poor qualities and has him overcome those flaws. Even if you don't like his brand of humour, he is a solid protagonist.

There are plenty of serious story beats with SPECTRA, Korsica's turn, and Peppermint's history. Aside from that the setting is a good satire of corporate culture, with references to things that actually happened like copyrighting the directional arrow.

There is never much downtime between fights. Secrets require thorough investigation but not to the point of annoyance. Platforming isn't complicated, but forces the player to pay attention. Rhythm feedback and the dash item pull makes movement satisfying. The only problem I can think of is that it's annoying to bust barrels since they take two hits, but otherwise you'll have to be more specific.

I think timed presses and staying to the beat, playing to enemy boss patterns, is basically what all action games already do. So I enjoy the context of getting good at keeping up a rhythm to keep up damage multipliers, also NiN and the Prodigy is in it which is nice.

eh, there's collectables but honestly getting from combat to combat has a lot of platforming, platforming puzzles and some on rails segments. There's a not-Bloody palace and arcade mode, and unlockable costumes for everyone. Also also, Hard = Normal, Very Hard = Hard, the game is pretty easy.
