Bought this during the last Steam sale and I have to ask, did I get bamboozled? So far this game is boring as frick and the time looping is just annoying. I'm about to hit the time limit for a refund so I need to ask, is the entire game like this? Just going to planets and reading text?
Outer Wilds is the ultimate NPC test. npcs do not have the curiosity drive that makes them want to explore and discover things of their own volition. There are no immediate dopamine rewards that most games have, like cosmetics, unlocks, and leveling up. You play because you want to explore and uncover the mystery, NPCs are physically incapable of doing this.

if you haven't had the ending spoiled for you then my advice when you get there is to hold on tightly to your balls and take the leap
I don't agree with this. The game presents all the answers as the written passages. As a result, the player has no opportunity to figure anything out on their own. Mind you, I only made it through the first few planets, but what I saw was a walking simulator with hoops to jump through. I am huge into puzzles and figuring things out (my day job is in science...chemistry), but this game gave me none of that. I'll have to try it again and I think I have to approach it without the mindset of a scientist and more like visiting a museum/amusement park.
Ganker here, the game is absolutely Ganker (specifically quantum physics) but you probably played like 5% of the game.
You're supposed to try to figure stuff out yourself: the texts spelling shit out directly are to help brainlets get something out of the experience too (and it's necessary given how many people complain about the ash twin teleport, tower of quantum knowledge and black hole forge puzzles)
The ash twin project teleport is bullshit though
I think that's part of the point, it's something so important that the player shouldn't be able to find it by chance. It made me feel stupid when I realized how it worked tbdesu.
There's nothing to "realize", it works the same way as the other teleporters. The bullshit part is - there is no puzzle to solve. You don't stop the sand or anything like that, you just awkwardly sprint on top of the teleporter platform while the sand pillar is still on top of it.
It actually doesn't work the same way as the other teleporters so it's even worse - the cores are always aligned so you should be able to warp at any point, unless i misunderstood something completely about how they work
No it works the same way as the other teleporter towers - they activate when the tower points to the destination celestial body. The "trick" to the ATP teleporter is that it's on the same planet as it supposed to point to. But in case of the hourglass twins it has to point at the center of mass, which lies between the two planets. But it's easy to figure out even without the unambiguous hints in the text notes in the game.
Or at least that's how it was for me. Actually going through the teleporter was the trickier part, since I tried it a couple of times and it didn't work. Maybe my timing was off, or I got lifted off the ground a centimeter too high or something. But that made me think I had to take a different approach and block the sand pillar somehow. But there's no solution to that.
>it has to point at the center of mass
ahh, i didn't make that connection. I also tried and failed to time it correctly and assumed that wasn't the solution. I do think it's a little inelegant but whatever
>I do think it's a little inelegant but whatever
It would've been just a small nitpick, but it happens at the climax of the whole game - entry to ATP. So this small issue is magnified several times.
in the noclip documentary they specifically point out that part, sounds like it was changed at some point.
It's the only thing in the game i would even think of changing, but i have no idea how it could or should be done
They've added a small niche inside the teleporter room. Where from you're supposed to sprint to the teleporter pad. Before it was just the doorway arch at the tower entrance that could shield you from the sand pillar. But you still have to sprint to the teleporter all the same.
ah that's pretty minor but it does at least point you in the right direction.
I've re-read the relevant clues and I think I was just too stupid to parse the difference between the receiver and alignment point tbph
>the Hourglass Twins are so close together they function as a single astral body, with a shared alignment point in between them
yeah i mean that's the whole ethos of the game, you could land on the quantum moon on your first run but no one would ever do it without knowing how.
They had to make it hard to enter ATP or else people would find it on their first loop and spoil the entire game. Maybe if they removed the massive wall scroll that outlines the nomai plan from beginning to end they could make it easier?
The thing is - the hints you find throughout the game don't actually make it easier to enter the ATP. The mechanics of the "puzzle" remain the same. Which is a necessity, I guess, considering this is a sort of "roguelike" story driven game, so you should be able to operate all the devices in the game as is, to be able to complete it in a single 22 minute "run".
>Actually going through the teleporter was the trickier part
This was my problem as well, I tried a couple times and failed so I dismissed it as not being the right thing to do, feels bad. After that I just hold the crouch button and it worked fine.
69 of truth.
/thread
You literally need the sovl of a researcher/adventurer to appreciate the master piece that outer wilds is
This, NPCs get filtered because there is no quest markers pointing you through the game. You have to actually think for yourself based on the info you are given to progress.
I swear half the posts in this thread are bots. This is a copypasta
fpbp
H*ckin vtubers have more drive to explore and passion for video games than modern day Ganker.
What Vtuber has played Outer Wilds?
couple of ID hoe-girlvers and some vshojo i cant remember.
Ah, I never pay attention to Indonesia. That explains it.
Limes.
just went and checked for you because i was also curious:
Hoe-girlve:
Amelia (EN)
Anya (ID)
Lamy (JP)
Nijisanji:
Elira (EN)
i'm surprised how few have played it
So hard playing this game as a vtuber. Getting the exact amount of hints needed every single time there's a puzzle just by looking at the chat. If I was a vtuber I'll have negative trouble playing this game.
Playing story based games on stream is always a gamble. because some homosexuals might ruin the story with just a single comment. Often not even trolls, but morons thinking they're being helpful and/or clever with their "thinly veiled" hints.
Yeah I agree sometimes you just get the exact amount of hints that for a very hard puzzle that still makes it satisfying to solve. Sometimes you just get the results spoiled with no warning so you basically played a puzzle game with no puzzle. Very hard gamble.
fpbp
This has been my observation as well. Outer Wilds is the greatest filter of all time. If you get filtered by it, you genuinely shouldn't be playing video games at all.
It's a puzzle exploration game, did you think you were going to be blasting aliens or some shit? I dont think you got "Bamboozled" so much as youre just kind of stupid.
I like exploring in games but nothing about this world is engaging me. So far the most interesting thing I've found is these underground ruins in Brittle Hollow, but that's not that interesting. Doesn't help that everything looks like some indie dev's first unity project mixed with Kerbal space program.
there are a lot of locations in ORANGE TEXT that are a challenge to get to. try figuring out where the ORANGE TEXT places are, and how the creatures that originally created them got to the ORANGE TEXT places
>So far the most interesting thing I've found is these underground ruins in Brittle Hollow,
well duh, the game isn't just going to give you the most interesting story bits and discoveries from the start.
did you have that moments where it "clicks" ? where you actually apply the knowledge you found on a wall and discover something new that opens up even more possibilities?
>i like exploring but exploring isnt interesting to me...........
If you didn't enjoy exploring the nooks and crannies of Timber Hearth then there's no helping you.
accidentally discovering the underground caves super late into my playthrough was a great moment
Yes, you fell for the dedicated shill. Sorry.
it's an exploration game, so just refund it
take your meds
>Makes the exact same posts on every thread
>Not a shill
schizofrenia is hell
go back to Fortnite
Same with subnautica, I am just the shooty shooty, drive Cars and beat up people kinda guy, and thats not a crime. Not yet
Yea that’s the whole game
Yes it sucks. And yes, I did finish it. Its a Ganker shill game. But this board also likes empty boring sandbox breath of the wild too so what did you expect? Open world meme is rotting the brain. Sometimes Ganker has some good recs like Return of Obra Dinn, but this one ain’t it. Its got reddit aliens
This game is Return of the Obra Dinn but in space and much more frustrating and less fun. Sucks because I loved Obra Dinn but this game and the fanbase is just so annoying.
>fanbase is annoying
why?
Okay maybe not most of the fanbase but every time someone doesn't like this game, especially here, you'll get called soulless or low IQ or whatever.
Maybe don't do that. I heard the ending is what makes the game a masterpiece. Haven't reached it yet but... I am trying.
This game doesn't have a fanbase? What?
Really? Obra Dinn makes me feel that I have progress every time I completed a puzzle. I also never worry about getting lost or dying. Two things that always happen to me with Outer Wilds.
>Okay maybe not most of the fanbase but every time someone doesn't like this game, especially here, you'll get called soulless or low IQ or whatever.
well anyone who likes the game is called shill, so I think it's something Ganker has instead of the fanbase, don't you think?
Maybe. But I don't hear that for other similar games, like Return of the Obra Dinn, and idk, maybe Myst? Could be because those games are much less talked about recently here.
OP here. Thanks you just convinced me to refund the game. Loved Obra Dinn as well.
there is no fanbase, you just crave to be annoyed at things
I found obra dinn way harder and more frustrating.
>This game is Return of the Obra Dinn but in space
So not like Obra Dinn at all
When I first played this game, I had just come off Obra Dinn. Outer Wilds felt very hand holdy and boring, and I never finished it. I'll have to try it again, but the amount of reading text really turns me off.
The text is always important in terms of fleshing out the backstory of the Nomai and/or giving you gameplay clues. If you hate reading maybe it's just not for you. There are some genuinely smart puzzles in it too, it's not all braindead "go here now" stuff.
It's not that I hate reading..I love reading. I usually try to read 2-3 books a month when I have time. I just hate reading in games since when I play a game I want to...you guess it...play a game, not read some poorly written quasi-philosphy.
Fair enough, but it's not a reading game. Most of what you're doing is platforming and exploration puzzles. the DLC is also extremely well integrated into the base game even if it is kind of a worse experience overall.
That's what I'm saying. There's so much text here. I don't mind it when it's lore text in a game because it's just that, lore. I also don't mind it in Visual Novels because it's basically the whole story and that's what VNs are. But this game I just read shit and I don't even remember what I read most of the time. This especially sucks when I came back after a bit of a break and then basically forget almost everything. This is what I get for exploring?
>I came back after a bit of a break and then basically forget almost everything
check your ships log, it keeps track of everything you found and even tells you if you missed anything.
if only there was some field of science that studies ancient civilizations, by going through their ruins and translating their writings.
even though the game often spell out things very directly, if you are clever enough you can infer a lot of things from incomplete info or just discover shit by dumb luck and/ or experimentation.
Okay. I think I'm making progress but all I see are more question marks in the ships log. I'll try again to push through.
>ADHD zoomers get filtered by letters
>Exploration game
>All you get for exploring is letters
Wow nice exploration. Really makes me curious for more.
>All you get for exploring is letters
wrong
you are truly braindead
Sorry I was pretending to be moronic. I still think the game has too much reading though.
It has less texts than fricking Call of Duty probably.
Fricking ADHD zoomers I swear you are the reason our society is crumbling. Zero attention span morons making zero effort in life.
Less text than COD? What? The text in COD that you have to read is
>PLAY
>NAME OF GUN
>NAME OF GAME MODE
>NAME OF EQUIPMENT AND KILLSTREAKS
>NAME OF MAP
Damn there's so much reading in COD.
I didn't even say the game was bad moron.
What, the quantum moon that is shifting in and out of existence based on the uncertainty principle from quantum mechanics, the planet with cyclones that shoot off islands into space, the planet that is breaking down with a black hole in its center, the twin planets that fill each other with sand, the planet that has dimensions within dimensions in it, the hidden space station that can only be visible through a particular angle as you watch the sun, the entire mystery of the sun exploding every 22 minutes in a timed loop, the goddamn Eye of the universe weren't enough for you?
>muh fanbase
>caring about the fanbase in a singleplayer game
I'll never understand this autism holy shit.
Don't listen to the elitism answer. Just close this thread and play it blind now before you got spoiled.
>too dumb to be enticed by the idea of figuring something out
>reads what the game presents to him without actually figuring out why
Pick a question the game presents and try to find out the reason, eventually you'll understand why the time loop is necessary for both story and exploration
I really do like this game, but I'm stuck and am completely stumped on where to go. I found the quantum moon, but I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to be finding there that's important. I'm also totally lost on where in the Dark Bramble the Vessel is. I found the NPC guy in the anglerfish skeleton though. Any help would be appreciated.
Also what is up with those red bubbles in the Bramble? I have absolutely no idea what it does.
I remember being stuck too, it was annoying. The thing with quantum rocks is you have to use your photo tool thing to [REDACTED]
>The thing with quantum rocks is you have to use your photo tool thing to [REDACTED]
I understand that, I'm just a bit confused on what exactly I'm supposed to be finding. I discovered the trick with the picture by coincidence, and I'm not sure if I needed more context on what to find there.
can you get to all of the moon?
find the escape pod first, in relative space, it's almost next to the vessel
theres no mystery to the red bubbles, it's roe
>find the escape pod first
Oh shit okay, and I'm assuming it gives off a frequency like the other two escape pods?
the red bubbles are anglerfish eggs
Fricking awesome, genuinely helpful tips. Thanks anons.
have fun anon
Use the sound tool in bramble to find clues.
To get around fish don't make sound and just drift
>can you get to all of the moon?
Also yeah I figured out the trick where you take the photo from space in order to land on it. I just figured it out by pure coincidence though, so I'm worried I'm missing context on what's supposed to be there.
go to every location on the quantum signalscope frequency
Landing on the quantum moon is just the first step. Try seeking the other quantum temples if you want more information.
The loop was annoying for a while for me, but i learned to love it, and it's worth it plot wise. When it clicks during the ending is worth it
For the people who are saying this game is good, please tell me whether you liked or disliked the following games:
Celeste
Disco Elysium
Tunic
haven't played any of them
Well I havnt played any of those and I loved outer wilds. I have 0 interest in celeste, both for story and gameplay. Disco Elysium is interesting and I'll prob play it at some point. Tunic looks fine for what it is but I dont have nostalgia for older LoZ games so I dont think I'm the target audience and prob wont play.
Played it for a bit, disliked it at first but I might pick it up one day
Absolute kino
Never heard of it
I sometimes forget people on here have such brainrot that they refuse to play games because heckin leddit likes them too. Literal manchildren lmao
The best part is when they try to deny that anyone on this board liked them at all before they became mainstream.
Or maybe it's because I played all 3 of those games that got lots of recommendations on here and I didn't like any of them, so I don't want to repeat this mistake for a fourth time by listening to the same group of morons. Has nothing to do with reddit but thanks for outing yourself as one.
>95%+ of people liked these games
>anon walks in here complaining he got recommended these games and didn't like them
>It's YOU guys who have a problem
You don't get any points anon.
>NOOOO you have to like games everyone else likes!
>NOOOO you can't ask me what my tastes are so you can get a more informed idea of whether you'll like games that I like
Alright, what are you top 5 games
Havent played celeste or disco elysium but they seem fun
Tunic was good. Very similar to outer wilds in that once you learn certain things about the world, you can't unlearn it, ehich makes for a very fun playthrough that can't really be replayed the same way.
I liked Disco Elysium but it's not for people who are unable to delay gratification.
Yeah, that's exactly what reddit would say, you proved my point.
This place has rotten your brain anon.
That's what reddit would say.
DE doesn't have traditional gameplay mechanics so it's not going to appeal to everyone.
Dropped disco because of the censoring of the word homosexual even though i was really liking the tone
Haven't touched any of the other ones.
>Dropping the GOTD because of that
you gays are worse than SJWs
i dropped it for the same reason but it frontloads the gayer shit like that and generally gets better
if you think the prose or humor is obnoxious that wont change though
>he doesn't know
Imagine you get so drunk and forget so much that you lose the concept of homosexuality.
>Celeste
Never played it
>Disco Elysium
It was alright
>Tunic
Never heard of it
>Celeste
dumb troony game, didn't play it
>Disco Elysium
dumb commie game, didn't play it
>Tunic
haven't heard of it, didn't play it
I love posts like this that prove brainlets roam this board
the only cool thing about this game is that it was made by Hiro Nakamura
You will thank anyone who said to stick with it OP, trust me on that. I had the same issue.
This game is not for normies anon, just refund it.
i spoke to the ghost on the bottom of the moon and thought that would be the end or lead to me to the end but he said nothing i didnt already know and when i jumped into the hole in the sky it just put me back near my ship
will i know when i have reached the end or is it one of those things where i will have to figure out for myself when there is nothing left?
All paths lead to one thing anon, ya can't miss it. You probably haven't explored Bramble or Ash Twin well enough.
There is a "the end" screen so yeah you will know it. What you have done can be considered getting a true ending.
You are unironically have too low IQ to play it. Just go back to Fortnite or Minecraft.
Ultimately filtered. Stop playing video games.
I enjoyed it, but it's not for everyone anon, quit if you feel like this isn't for you
>outer wilds
>obra dinn
is there anything else like this? i wish i could unplay them and play them again tbh
Nope. Closest thing is Myst and Obduction. Only other games that are kinda similar are
>Portal and Portal-likes
Portal 1 and 2 (duh), Talos Principle, Superliminal
>Walking Simulators
What Remains of Edith Finch, Stanley Parable
What about that Rapture game?
It's just another okay walking simulator. The only ones that are great other than the ones I've already mentioned are
>Journey
>Abzu
>Soma
>Before Your Eyes (more like a blinking simulator)
And maybe Death Stranding but that's one of the most divisive games I've ever seen so it's personal taste.
Thoughts on Riven? I liked the new Myst remaster well enough but it wasn't as good as Outer Wilds so not sure if I should play the old Riven
ah well, myst it is then. i remember being too moronic to play it as a kid so at least i can play it blind.
there's like 100 lines of text in the entire game, you are clinically moronic. most of them are obviously extraneous and just there for flavour and to expand the world a bit
Maybe I am clinically moronic. But okay. The world building is good from what I have read.
I forgot about that game. Don't know how actually good it is but it definitely fits the similar kind of vibe of these games.
INFRA
>INFRA
thanks babe, will check it out
Yes it's a pleb filter.
>OH STARS ABOVE IS THAT A WHOLESOME OWL PERSON? WOAWIES IM GONNA GO TALK TO THEM THEY MUST BE HECKIN FRIENDL- ACKKK!!
this would be funny if it wasn't creatively bankrupt
At least save the full version you numbskull
why do people pretend like you need to be intuitive at all to solve the "puzzles" in this game
why do people pretend like you can be filtered by flying the spaceship when there's a tutorial for it and an autopilot button
why do people pretend like the dialogue isn't reddit shit
>why do people pretend like you can be filtered by flying the spaceship when there's a tutorial for it and an autopilot button
No one's pretending on that one, you wouldn't believe how many people I've seen genuinely complain about how bad they think the ship controls are
>this would be funny if it wasn't creatively bankrupt
Does this have a switch version?
It's the only gaming device I have now.
"Soon"
Not yet. But the game's really potato friendly.
It's not that friendly iirc: if you leave your ship and the probe on different planets and go to another planet yourself, you've got a chance of bricking an Xbox because the game is forced to simulate three entire planets completely rather than using less intensive approximations for when you're not there. The Devs mentioned having to remove an achievement for doing it because encouraging players to try something that could destroy their consoles was legally questionable or something.
Does obra dinn have good music like OW?
ding dong
di-di dong
dingdingding di-di diong
I just googled it, seems pretty kino.
I will check this game out for sure.
I watched the Jerma playthrough yesterday. He didn't absorb a damn thing about the narrative.
well he did fall for the looney troons narrative so he can't possibly be the brightest bulb in the box
If you aren't into space exploration and a side of light physics based puzzles, the game really isn't for you and is in fact boring as shit. If you do like those things, then it won't be.
are these projection stone things anything but visual clues? I'm not missing something obvious where I'm able to interact with the weird window they open up for you to look into right?
They're just there to let you see where were the other people they were talking to
yeah that's what I assumed, I was just afraid to possibly be missing something really obvious about them.
thanks
they just give you glimpses into areas you (probably) haven't been to yet. Don't forget you can use the stones to reveal text as well as project like that
this game is super heckin deep if you've never read a book! it changed my life
how pathetic
