Bout to start this up for the first time.
Any thoughts? Opinions? Tips?
I'm aware of Disc 2 shenanigans.

Citan, Elly and Bart are the best party members, debuffs stack endlessly, ether attacks are actually the best moves you just need to stack a bunch of ether doublers to increase a characters base ether stat, you get to hyper mode by getting gears to attack level 3 and landing a regular attack based on the % displayed on the Hud (never explained)
terrible gameplay held up by a wild ride of a story
great music, this is the kind of game that will probably annoy you at times but you've got to get to the ending because it's definitely worth it. also make sure you're paying attention to your equipment and keep aware of your direction, sometimes you'll come out of a battle facing the opposite of where you entered battle
>also make sure you're paying attention to your equipment
this. Xenogears is one of those games where your equipment matters way more than your level. When in doubt, upgrade your armor for your characters, and engines for your mechs.
It takes about 20-30 hours to set up the plot at the beginning. You will feel like you are doing a bunch of random, unrelated things for a while but stick with it and you will see how it all plays out.
Also, do it for her.
I finished the game in 40 hours and did pretty much everything.
Combat that's interesting in concept but painfully easy so it gets dull fast
the combat animations are pretty cool though
Also be sure to do Emeralda's sidequest in Disk 2, it's like the only real major sidequest in the game
Buy ether doublers before you go up the Tower of Babel.
If its not too late just spare yourself. I'm not saying the game is bad, quite the opposite. Its tragically good and its unfinished state will eat at you for the rest of your life.
I played and finished it as a young teen when it first came out, and it was a mind-altering experience that molded my perception of what made a good RPG. I didn't know it was unfinished at the time, but it didn't impact my enjoyment of it.
Watch a Longplay to know what to do, where to go, how many levels to grind, etc. Watch it carefully, it may spoil you if you want to enjoy even more your gameplay
There's a code for autorun.
>I'm aware of Disc 2 shenanigans.
That's unfortunate, the less absolutely batshit insane stuff you know about Disc 2 the better. Was non stop kino from start finish even though it was blatantly unfinished
OP here. I'll admit. I know next to nothing about the plot except three things. Armor guy is maybe Fei's dad or Fei, Soilent Green, and Disc 2 is a VN. I know nothing about the plot and I'll be dipping now. Thanks for the tips peeps.
Welcome to the single most influencial jrpg storyline that exists. Buckle in for a wild ride.
get a mod to speed up the text
such a basic thing missing from the game, the exposition scenes will make you want to have a nice day with how slow they are at default
it's very good but everything turns to shit after you get to the last 1/3 of the game
they say they ran out of money but I don't really know what happened, if definitely could have been 20+ hours shorter.
They didn't run out of money, they ran out of time. It was made a team of rookies who just didn't know how to execute the plot ideas they had and Square couldn't spare any more manpower. They didn't want to make a sequel so they just got it out the door as a VN.
>they say they ran out of money
they never really said that, that was fan headcanon/cope
originally takahashi had no intention of finishing the story, leaving it at the cliffhanger of disc 1(which is also why its so fricking long)
the producers at square forced him to release disc 2 because they had no intention of making a sequel for one reason or another
Play along Resonant Arc's story analysis on YouTube.
>JRPG
>Main character doesn't use a sword
>Instantly hooked
This honestly is what got me. Fei is a KARATE GUY and that ruled to 12-year-old me.
Honorable mention to Suikoden 2 and Riou's tonfa.
>didn't want to make a sequel
>cliffhanger of disc 1
Man Xenogears ending with Fei limping away from the Weltall wreckage with Elly would have had me on tenterhooks until the next game. I wish they split it up.
>Fei is a KARATE GUY
Ummm AHKUSHALLY he's a kung fu guy since he's chinese. Citan is also a Japanese person basically larping as a chinese martial artist master/doctor
My bad anon. 20 years later and I just learned there was a difference.
Ackshually Kung Fu just means skill, so he's a Wushu guy.
the gameplay is so fricking slow i got filtered im sorry
Ngl I only could appreciate Xenogears after playing it up to the Orphanage, dropping it, playing through all Xenosagas and the first Xenoblade. When I returned it was worth it.
It’s easier if you play FF7 first. Better slip into old clunky 90s RPG gameplay.
>The same thread from yesterday
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START THE FRICKING GAME?
>Opinions?
Once you beat this you might hate Square enix and might not even like Xenoblade not because its bad or anything but compared to Xenogears its painfully generic but again that's only if you compare it to gears.
>painfully generic compared to gears
Xenogears plays way more like a generic jrpg than the xenoblade games
I wouldn't even say that, which jrpgs allow you to input commands to do martial arts inputs in the middle of a battle? There are a few, but not that many. Meanwhile Xenoblade just plays like a standard tab target mmo but you have random qtes so you feel like you're doing something more.
It's obvious that the guy was also talking about the story, world and lore of Xenogears compared to Xenoblade. Xenogears' story makes Xenoblade look like a wet fart in comparison
>which jrpgs allow you to input commands to do martial arts inputs in the middle of a battle
Final Fantasy 6?
Blitz commands actually matter in FF6 too unlike the deathblow cancer
>Meanwhile Xenoblade just plays like a standard tab target mmo
What the frick are you talking about?
>but you have random qtes so you feel like you're doing something more.
You're spouting this right after praising deathblows as a feature?
>What the frick are you talking about?
The frick are you talking about? You can literally stand infront of any shitty enemy in Xenoblade and the game will just take care of it for you, it's basically just a shitty mmo combat system
>You can literally stand infront of any shitty enemy in Xenoblade and the game will just take care of it for you
until you get one shot by a premonition you didn't stop
come back when you've actually played the game
>until you get one shot by a premonition you didn't stop
Fricking lol that you'd even use this as an example when those are extremely easy to deal with and don't even occur when you're fighting most enemies. BTW when I beat this game, the enemies in the final dungeon were literally too low level to aggro on me, Xenoblade is the most braindead easy ass game on the wii
>don't even occur when you're fighting most enemies
moron, its not a scripted event
its a proper mechanics which you are too low IQ to understand
>proper mechanic
It's just a shitty gimmick you over zealous xenoblade tard
>which jrpgs allow you to input commands to do martial arts
Legend of Legaia
Pretty sure legend of dragoon has a similar mechanic, as did grandia. The button inputs don't add anything, you use the same ones (or random ones) until you learn a deathblow then deathblow rush bosses
>MMO
Xenoblade is more of a real time RPG than an mmo game, this is especially true for the games following the original
>as did grandia.
I've played through the entire game and don't remember anything like that
>Xenogears plays way more like a generic jrpg than the xenoblade games
I think they meant the story when you compare Gears t blade its like comparing eva to shonen.
Why can't nintendo, Monolith and square work out a deal? to port or remake this game? what are the afraid of?
its a shit game
square has better games to remaster
>square has better games to remaster
and all of those are garbage.
gearshitter and having the worst opinions possible
name a more iconic duo
The guy you're replying to is a salty xenoblade homosexual that can't accept that Gears is better
>square has better games to remaster
which every single one lost revenue, time for a new strategy
>which every single one lost revenue
all the SaGa remasters made more money than xenogears lmao
Same for the Live A Live remaster
and soon to be released DQ3 remaster
>what are the afraid of?
Priests fricking children.
Takahashi.
If you want to trivialize almost every boss encounter, grind for the ether doubler you can buy early on (it's way expensive), and give it to Elly. Then spam her aerods until the boss is dead. Works like voodoo magic for most of the game.
Otherwise, play as you would any other game, pay close attention to the dialog, because most of it is crucial to understanding the entire story, and have fun. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
