He already admitted several times that game dev is a lot more tedious than most people assume. This is why he never does frequent reveals or announcements because he already said something about it being on the back burner. So you are already right that he ends up being more focused on lets plays and other small projects like working on Smiling Friends or the Tenacious D music video.
This is what happens when you've been carried through life by half-assed copying the most popular thing and never had to ever buckle down and do any hard work.
