1993 version. Avoid RealMyst at all costs. 2021 version is... fine, but ONLY if you're playing it in VR and if you can get over the shitty CGI versions of the characters.
ignore everything this moron says. the 1993 version is unplayable nowadays....like literally nothing plays it unless you run some virtual machine, it's fine because that version is dogshit. Play realMYST and just set it to old school mode where you movie in still frames instead of full 3d movement. DO NOT play the new one they put a fricking Breaking Bad Mexico Sepia tone filter over it, I have no fricking clue why Cyan did that it's ugly as frick. If there is a mod to remove it then go for it but the Masterpiece Edition is cheaper.
>Myst TV series
if this were the 2000s, I'd be like "That sounds exciting!" but as it is 2023, god please no, the tone would never be right, the writing would probably be full of millennial joss whedonisms ("WOAH, DID I JUST TRAVEL... INTO A BOOK? WHERE AM I?") I just see nothing good coming of it because some exec is going to step in and whine that things are too slow paced, too experimental, too "boring".
It's literally impossible to find OG Realmyst nowadays. At least I couldn't find it.
I don't know what the other anon was complaining about in regards to needing a virtual machine because myst works in ScummVM.

yup. they would put in a bunch of silly bullshit. They sold the rights to make a tv show a while back, with our luck it'll be an apple tv series.

In all seriousness only reason I think a myst TV show would be somewhat interesting is because I read this book back in the day and thought it was fascinating.
Then again, I was also a teenager.

Conceptually, what would differentiate a Myst show from StarGate SG-1, save for the lack of a diverse toolbox of sci-fi concepts?

It has been so long since I watched Stargate SG-1 (we're talking over a decade) that I couldn't honestly answer this question in good faith.

heres a big one, stargate is old now, so this could be a new generation's stargate show.
>You guys ready for that Myst tv series?
oh boy i can't wait to see atrus write an age where real life bad thing that has nothing to do with games never happened and catherine was captured because she did real life thing that has nothing to do with games and gehn is cooky old crackpot who lives in an age where real life bad thing that has nothing to do with games happened and he likes it instead of it just being a fantasy show.

the Stranger will be played by black woman
Watch the talk by rand at mysterium this year. There was one question where he said in so many words that he doesn't like wokeshit and ruining shows with real life politics. So if rand is involved it won't happen probably.
>What's the best way to play Myst?
This question has a complicated answer. If you plan on playing through the series? The Masterpiece Edition. Thus, you get in the groove of what you will encounter through the series rather than being given a more fluid experience that spoils you.
And, since I'll assume you're totally new, Myst and Riven are brother games. Riven is basically Part 2 of Myst. So playing in the original format so you'll thus be able to better enjoy Riven when the time comes is a thought.
at this point the only caveat to riven remake is the live action bits. starry exapnse already did the leg work of camera matching everything so the look and feel should be fine.
>he doesn't know
They're going to be making actual changes. Rand is autistic about lore so he justifies it as 'material newly uncovered by the drc' or whatever
oh no
i had heard they had a gameplay demo but they showed crater island that looked pretty faithful. i'm open to some changes i guess but i hope they can be optional. i think what makes me the most of it is stuff like that will just delay the release to frick knows when.
>They're going to be making actual changes.
oh god don't frick it up, I'm worried, I just wanted riven in 3D with VR support. Here's hoping the changes aren't bad.
oh no

If Myst VR is any indication...we're in for a bad time.
I liked what I played of Uru. It wasn't much but it was enough to not hate it. Never played it with other people though I wonder if that was any fun. Also I need Myst walls. Anything really, screenshots from the games whatever.
i didnt play this game for so long because i was sure it was gonna be some esoteric hard as frick puzzle game. I played a few point and click adventure games with my ex like Scratches and some of the Lucas Arts games so i was like "Oh man, Myst is gonna be too hard"
Played it last year and really liked it, not hard at all. makes sense since it was the first of it's kind. Funny, a lot of the indie horror games you see on itch.io play like this game all these years later, lore included.
>boot up myst as a teenager >fumble around looking at cool scenery >can't figure jack shit out >no fricking idea what these buttons do >bro what is with this fricking talking scrambled man I can't understand shit >solve 0 puzzles before going back to sim city 2000 or something
The most potent memory I have of this game is buying a Myst figure for $1 at fricking save-a-lot maybe 15-18 years ago now
I saw the original 3 games ran at a GDQ back to back last year (on youtube not live obviously) and I still don't understand the story.
I could spell it out, but a big part of the original Myst is that it's a mystery game. So I could if you didn't care, but there's a lot of backstory to dig into.
>Myst Figure
they sold Myst Action Figures? thats interesting.
They made 2 for Myst III's release. One of Atrus and one of Saavedro.
I really doesn't matter to me but the chance of playing Myst in the future is still above 0% (still fairly low given the talk that most versions change the original vision and I don't feel like getting scumm VM for three games and nothing else)
Myst was "le liminal spaces" before zoomers picked up on it as a horror concept.
Myst 3 specifically scared me as a kid not because of the lonely spaces or the liminal visuals, those were beautiful and cozy to me, it was because I always thought I was gonna turn a corner and Saavedro was gonna be there to fricking murder me.
Bro, same. I was terrified at any moment some shit was gonna just pop out from somewhere and spook you
I played it just last year and honestly going into the first age with all the trees, after reading about it, i was getting axious thinking there was gonna be one of those creatures the lore describe just suddenly jumping out.
It was a pretty solid game. Too bad the development seemed so troubled. It's one of those games that's probably a tiny fragment of the original ambition.
Not a fan of every puzzle being interfaced with the exact same way (probably a concession for VR) or the 'just dump all the story in the last 20 minutes' ending
>(probably a concession for VR)
The only thing VR changes is having a 6DoF camera and having 2 mouse pointers you can control indepentently instead of one, I wish devs would realize this instead of going >"NOOOOO YOU HAVE TO BUILD EVERYTHING FROM THE GROUND UP FOR VR OR IT WON'T MAKE SENSE REEE"
because one of my most played games in VR is GZdoom and that was never designed for VR but plays beautifully in it anyway cause it's basically just a light gun game in that context with freedom of movement.
lel. what game console is that supposed to be, i dont recognize it.

They didn't have a Dreamcast model when I took this screencap, nor did they have a guncon model. They have both now IIRC. I was playing the Dreamcast version of House of the Dead 2.
I hear you can also set up Dosbox Pure to run windows 95 and play Myst on a simulated CRT since all EmuVR is is a retroarch wrapper, and play myst, though I don't know what the performance is like.

Honey Select has you covered there. https://github.com/Eusth/HoneySelectVR
I'm very disappointed that games never were able to emulate the care put into the setting, lore, atmosphere, visual design, etc. of Myst. Games are treated like a source of quick dopamine and nothing more and target teens and preteens.
is that destiny

yeah, realMyst masterpiece is what i meant. You guys ready for that Myst tv series? anyday now....

Really quickly by not going into any of the levels or exploring anything
There was actually a special re-release for the switch a few years back,still no sign of Riven being ported though;_;
it's just gonna appear on steam one day, and there will be an announcement the same day like "Riven Remastered is here!" watch.
nah b***h i've seen your rooms you're not getting shit except a spanking from dad
I'm cautiously optimistic about the Riven remake. Change scares me but having Richard Vander Wende makes me happy.
I just wanna play Riven in VR.
at this point the only caveat to riven remake is the live action bits. starry exapnse already did the leg work of camera matching everything so the look and feel should be fine.

Is that some kind of Origami structure?
>They're going to be making actual changes.
oh god don't frick it up, I'm worried, I just wanted riven in 3D with VR support. Here's hoping the changes aren't bad.
If Myst VR is any indication...we're in for a bad time.
What's wrong with myst vr I played it on pc without vr and thought it was alright. I also haven't played the original myst in over a decade though so.
They replaced the FMV video with 3d model holograms, which didn't look very good and which many people considered a crime against god.
Oh well they patched that. The ending is still in 3d though.
>I also haven't played the original myst
thats why, enjoy your sepia tone game
Bro it's been over 15 years since I played myst frick off homosexual.
They all look good.
>They all look good.
>frogposter
Riven was probably one of biggest parts of my childhood. I used to fantasize about living in the Rivinese village because it was just so damn cool
I liked what I played of Uru. It wasn't much but it was enough to not hate it. Never played it with other people though I wonder if that was any fun. Also I need Myst walls. Anything really, screenshots from the games whatever.
Frick, I remember trying to play this game as a child
I never got very far because I was still a gamelet who got easily filtered
Buy realmyst masterpiece (2014), it gets discounted to about $5 on steam pretty regularly
i didnt play this game for so long because i was sure it was gonna be some esoteric hard as frick puzzle game.
For me, it's
>boot up myst as a teenager
>fumble around looking at cool scenery

I wouldn't call it "action" per se but yes. Wish I still had it just for that left-field factor.
I could spell it out, but a big part of the original Myst is that it's a mystery game. So I could if you didn't care, but there's a lot of backstory to dig into.

>gatekeeping myst
only on Ganker
Myst scared me when i was a little kid.
Bro, same. I was terrified at any moment some shit was gonna just pop out from somewhere and spook you
*makes you shit your pants*
Well, Myst 100% is a horror game, of a sort.
>mfw couldn't get very far literally just the first room before mom freaks out over the constellation room thinking it was promoting demonology
lol. i heard about ids like you with very religious parents. Did you mom & dad think the nintendo would hurt the TV too?
Myst was "le liminal spaces" before zoomers picked up on it as a horror concept.
Myst 3 specifically scared me as a kid not because of the lonely spaces or the liminal visuals, those were beautiful and cozy to me, it was because I always thought I was gonna turn a corner and Saavedro was gonna be there to fricking murder me.
>Atrus I'm not you
Atrus needs castration, frick his children.
The entire series is about Atrus dodging responsibility. The entire god-damned series.
I was also easily creeped out by early 3D games
I played it just last year and honestly going into the first age with all the trees, after reading about it, i was getting axious thinking there was gonna be one of those creatures the lore describe just suddenly jumping out.
>2023

I think it should be obvious that's a typo
>cause it's basically just a light gun game in that context with freedom of movement.
