A lot of new pokemon designs rely on 3D and animations to showcase their quirks. If we were to ever go back to pixel art it would have to be better than ever before to convey that.

I like sprites too and all those 'demakes' of 3D models generally look awesome but people need to understand that it wasn't an aesthetic choice for the series, it was about technical limitations.
Same with Pokemon not being visible but appearing in random encounters. Same with the environments being small and linear.
Once you have a 3D model, it's way easier to work with, the series will never go back to 2D.

Guess this is why they shouldn't base their designs around the generational fad. Gen 8 mons don't look fully evolved with Gigantamax gone, there's nothing in Duraludon's regular design that really hints at it being a building, it's giga form completed the concept. Same thing with Sandaconda, Alcremie, Orbeetle and Toxtricity (mostly because regular tox is hideous)
And people got mad when Gen 6 didn't give mega evos to Kalos Pokemon instead of letting them stand on their own. Mega Diancie suffers from the exact same problem as the Gen 8 gigantamaxes

The only mons that really got fricked over by G-Max’s removal were Duraludon and Alcremie. They lack an evolution and need the G-Max to fulfill their fantasy.
Sandaconda’s a bit plain but the “sand shotgun” part of its design is still clearly there, and the rest of the G-Max mons look fully evolved.
