I'd play it but lately I can't for the life of me finish a playthrough of any given pokemon game. Legends/violet kinda killed the franchise for me. I'm also surprised at some of their decisions with the retyped Pokemon, regionals and new evolutions. From what I can gather, they did things like keeping the Clefairy and Puff lines pure Normal or only having the Magnemite line gain the Steel type when it becomes Zone. I also notice from just the cursory glances I've given to the dex that they added say H-Arcanine but not H-Growlithe, or both the original Space world Farfetch'd evo AND Sirfetch'd are present but there isn't a G-Fetch'd so it makes me wonder how that works mechanically.

romhacking limitations gave them a limit of 253 mons in the dex. they couldnt fit johto babies or regional form preevos because of this. regional forms are handled by all being trades, and thus almost all of them are available as soon as you obtain the kantonian forms. in-game trades also dont give bonus exp, dont disobey, and can be nicknamed to compensate for the large amount of them now. i like the way they went about it because it makes trading feel like a very important mechanic even in single player.
I don't get why Steel ISN'T weak to Electric in the first place. Literally every JRPG depicts robotic enemies as being weak to electric attacks because they conduct electricity. It's the same shit with Ice being resisted by Water, even though every fictional character with ice powers is shown freezing water. Were Gamefreak just being contrarian?
well I'm going to let my autism fly here, but I always figured Water resisted Ice because water has a high specific heat. I do think it should go both ways though, where Ice should resist Water for pretty much the same reason. And as for Steel, hardly any of the Pokémon with that type are robots or mechanical like in other JRPGs. I think Steel is really just "metal minerals" the type, so it just being neutral with Electric makes more sense. I did find it wacky though that in this original type chart Steel is immune to itself, which actually makes a lot of sense, and doesn't resist a majority of types -- only Rock, Poison and Fighting of all things. And you know what its other weakness is? Frickin Water. And offensively, it is only resisted by Electric and Water and only strong against Rock! Every other type is neutral except obviously itself, which it is immune to. I would have loved to see how the games developed if that was the type chart. I don't think Steel is as omnipresent as it once was since the changes in Generation 6, but thinking about them originally planning Steel as NOT a defensive type but something more like Dragon that's just fairly neutral across the board is absolutely wild. I think it would have made a huge huge difference in how we use that type today and passively it would have pretty much allowed Normal and Psychic to stay massive threats in conjunction with the beta version of Dark type being weak to the former and only resisting the latter
i think of it this way: water is resistant to changes in heat. you go to a pool or beach, it's cold during the day but warm at night because it takes time for heat to transfer between the water and the environment around it. so if ice represents the cold and fire represents the heat, water resists both because it is resistant to changes in temperature.

That would be such a lore-breaking implementation. It doesn't make sense for your best pokemon buds to be forced into peak combat performance mode at all times. Considering that many dex entries also heavily imply mega evolving is painful for the user, it feels even worse than just the base implications of it.
There's also a another implementation issue than just getting the mons in. If we do go with the hacky method of just making them 4th stages, how do also restrict them to 1 mega per team?
I also really do think balance is important and giving the player what amounts to box legendary stats in the main quest doesn't sit right with me. I don't like it when GSC does it, either, for the record. Obviously for weaker megas like Beedrill and Pidgeot this doesn't really apply, but I think I'd rather sacrifice the weaker megas so we don't let the stronger ones roam free. I say this as the biggest Mega Beedrill fan on this planet, for the record.

the game already does this with things like the Zubat line where they added in the baby but also Crobat for some reason. I haven't checked the entire dex, but it looks like this is also the case for Magnemite who now has a different second stage before Magneton. some really bizarre shit honestly I don't like it
the problem with adding betamons is that some of the designs were scrapped because they were too similar to another design that made it in, or they were made into that later design. there really is no reason to add another squid when tentacruel already exists. they probably merged the two water turtles together because having two water turtles is unnecessary.
