This has become especially pervasive in the tabletop RPG world. Up until recently, everyone I played D&D with since the 90s was excited to explore playing a character in a fantasy world and roleplaying in a believable way. Self-insertion was not uncommon, but it was more about using yourself as a template to build a fantasy character on top of, to play out a "what if" fantasy.
These days, it's way more common to see players projecting their own fantasy characters back onto themselves, much like how furries treat their sparkledogs like "this is the real me." Because of this, D&D has become less about how your character fits into the setting and story, and more about how the setting and story can accommodate and validate your character and thus yourself. Players get extremely upset about bad things happening to their characters because they mentally treat it the same as the bad thing happening to their real self, and it has led to the most unstable cohort of players driving the already shallow pool of DMs further out to the fringes because they just want to play a fantasy game instead of being treated like a personal therapist responsible for everyone's mental well-being.
I can't even say it's strictly zoomers, I've seen people in their 40s acting like this who never used to. I think social media is probably a primary factor in whatever social mutation has led to this lack of emotional maturity that continues to spread and get worse. I don't really know what the best solution is other than to try my best to identify and surround myself with people who aren't phone zombies.

That part is definitely true. Being extremely, overly conscious about "identity", manufacturing it as carefully as possible, advertising it to others. Every waking moment, they have to take care that everything they express suits this identity, even such things as tastes in music or movies or simply food. When I play an roleplaying game, I like to, you know, roleplay.
I am going to immerse myself into the game. I don't want to just "play" the game, thinking YES, THIS IS A VIDEO GAME, I want to BE in that world for the time playing. It's much more fun than just clicking buttons trying to beat that boss, check that box, move on.
Immersion is extremely important, I can't imagine disattaching yourself from the game and just being a dumb fricking drooling moron afraid of his own imagination.
People pick what resonates with them. It's why they have favorite colors or pick a specific monopoly piece. You can keep coping but the fact is if you exclusively play as girls you are a homosexual or a troony. Just like if you said your favorite color was hot pink or you pick the ship everyone knows what you're about no matter how hard you try to deny it

I played Gen 1 as a dumb kid but never finished it, and that was about all of my Pokemon experience for the last 20 years.
Suddenly a few weeks ago I felt like trying them again, and holy shit these games are so much more enjoyable when you can just hold down a button to fastforward through longass animations.
I've been playing them on my Vita, and it's great. Did everything in Red, then Crystal (Battle Tower sucked ass), and now I'm trying to 100% Emerald. Battle Frontier makes me want to end myself.
Unfortunately all that's left after this is Fire Red, then that's about it for the Vita accessible games.
Games that give me the choice between playing as a male or female are based entirely around the question of whether or not the game will provide me an appealing pre-created waifu, or if I could choose/make my own, better waifu.
In Mass Effect or Elden Ring, I play a male because there is a waifu I want and therefore will self-insert as. If there was not, I'd make a cute waifu character of my own if possible., In Cyberpunk, there are no waifus I'm interested in at all, so I make my own ideal waifu and make decisions for that player character waifu that make her all the more ideal in my eyes. I download mods to make her more custom and dress her up in cool/sexy ways that I'd want my custom waifu to look like.
In Pokemon Omega Ruby, I chose the game version AND a male because I wanted my male character to be around the autistic enemy girl character Courtney, even if only tangentially and briefly, because it's fun to think about this autistic robot fanatic woman raping my character (me). Same with Pokemon Sun/Moon and Lusamine. But that's a little different because that game has customization of female characters, so I'm tempted to play the girl. In Pokemon XY the customization was so good I played as a girl and made a little waifu.
If I do play a male, I prefer to make a Solid Snake or Geralt type of dude.
All my girl characters if given the option have long hair and bangs too. And thick eyeliner/mascara. That's my type. I'm just making my type.

It works just fine.
The touch screen in the NDS games is just for secondary stuff like picking attacks, looking through your bag, your map etc.
Only problem is if you are playing on the Steam Deck or any portable since you are going to have to pick a rather awkward way of setting up both screens, either one beside another, or make one big and the other tiny, or set up a button to switch between screens.
So I could probably just plug a gamepad in and be fine to play it like that most of the time?

Kinda, there is some stuff that does requiere using the touch screen, though if you are emulating on PC you can just use the mouse.
It mostly only uses the touch screens meaningfully in some minigames.
Yes, it's worth playing Platinum and/or Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Emulation of DS games is pretty straightforward and Pokemon only really uses the touch portions for very specific touch centric mini-segments if at all or for convenience of menu selection that can still be done with just normal dpad+A selection. And even then, since gen 3 or later you can basically play the games largely 1 handed because you can in the settings make it so the L button functions as a second A button.
Many people consider Black/White, Black2/White2 the best games in the entire series but for me it's Platinum and if you're a Johtogay then HG/SS.
