I have a ton of cousins (mom had 10 siblings and most of them had children of their own). For the kids family events were basically Pokemon laundering during Gen 1 and Gen 2.

I can already tell those were good times. It was just me and my sister but whenever we went to our grandparents home in the week end we would play and trade become while watching cartoon network and eating grilled toasts and the pie she always made. I can still taste everything perfectly as if I went back to 22 years ago.

My mom had Blue and I had Red. I kicked her ass in link battles, but she kicked my ass in the card game. She also got Silver, while I had Gold. My sister had Sapphire, while I had Ruby. Unfortunately I always put more hours into the games so had the leg up on both of them.

I have a friend who was an uncle the moment he was born. His oldest sibling was 20 and already had a kid before his parents accidentally conceived him.

        Anonymous

It's sad that there are so many people that are utterly unqualified to have children, and yet parents like these lost their son. They obviously loved him a ton, look at that grave. A toy car, a wreath, a custom fricking bulbasaur (based son btw, no surprise), and his photo as well. That wouldn't be cheap. They even remembered to point out that he was an uncle, so the parents weren't even selfishly concerned only about their own connections to him. They were even humble enough to honor him with that favorite quote. Many other parents would avoid choose something else because that one is risqué, shamefully not representing their son the way he would have wanted.
The thing that riles me up with this is the space between the opening quote and the "H". It looks like they accidentally added an extra full space between them, and the kid deserved better than that sloppy work.

          Anonymous

There's a space between the period and the quotation mark as well so this was an intentional decision. However, the font they used has a period that sits close to the right and the end quotation is closer to the left so it makes that gap between the H and the start quotation look a lot bigger than it really is. I do agree that they should have done a better job, but it's mostly due to the choice of font.

  7. 6 months ago
    Anonymous

Back then the intent was social. You bought one version and then you found a friend with another version and then you traded and then you battled and then you continue to be friends. It's part of the reason why Pokemon succeeded so well aside from insane marketing and a partner anime to go with it. The problem is that we now live in the age of the internet. The Link cable is no longer necessary, you can connect with the entire planet at the push of a button. So there's no point in splitting your versions anymore because there's no reason to find a friend with the opposite version and you can't communicate with whoever you meet online.

      Anonymous

      This.

They should make a single version and randomize some kind of seed at the start of the game that determines how rare some Pokemons are gonna be in your game

I think did you know gaming mentioned somewhere that was an idea they had before the 2 version concept.

      Anonymous

Japan has an obsession with making gaming a social experience and even with the NES/SNES the intent was for multiplayer or social gaming. Continued on into N64 with 4 player splitscreen and all the games that supported it, Gamecube's carrying handle was so you could bring it to a friend's place easily. And of course Wii because a party accessory more or less. Even now the Switch was heavily advertised as a social experience. And Pokemon was designed very heavily with social settings in mind (one of the few Japanese social gaming schemes that actually succeeded and was prevelant in the US)

It's bizarre because Japanese gamers are usually the biggest autistic NEETs.

Catching them all is bullshit because you also need the 3rd Eevee evolution and the different evolutionary stages of each starter and version exclusive. It's not as simple as just linking up and swapping the missing pokemon; you need multiple saves from the same version.

      Anonymous

you had to be really committed to catching them all back then, it was admirable. you had to be some rich kid with 2 gameboys or be a chad with enough friends to make the trades
