This is one of the best RPGs I have ever played and I have never beaten it because it's so brutal, yet it's so fair that wizards can beat it consistently. Brogue is so TIGHT and elegant in its design, every move you make is deliberate, every floor could kill you, every item has a good use, combat is never a chore. You can download it for FREE. Any RPG developer, especially turn based and jarpig, is required to play this masterpiece.

ADOM is strictly better in every possible way and it's also free.
>exp and levels
it's shit. in brogue you need to pick your battles carefully and you can choose to skip any encounter if you have the means (an item that lets you pass walls, a potion that confuses the enemy, high stealth etc.)
So you're just talking shit about a game you never played.
I am giving reasons for my opinion, you're not.
You can get killed by a jackal on your way home from closing the chaos gate (regular victory condition) in ADOM.
Not being careful gets you killed and when you think you're comfortable in your high 30s to early 40s, you get one-shotted by random monsters you've never seen before.
I've played ADOM since I was a kid, version 0.9.9 Gamma 6 was on a 3.5' floppy that came with a local gaming magazine.
Remember to note down your first kill, and not make your first kill hard to find for later.
It's good but it's too random. Fights tend to end in a few hits, which is fine, and a lot of the time you and the monsters have about a 50% chance to hit each other, which is less fine, and the two together make the combat system very swingy.
Adom is good too but its time limit doesn't really work and you almost always have the option to grind to win. Brogue is much better about keeping up constant pressure.
Tales of Maj'Eyal is way better and has visuals that are not digital diarrhea.
Every screenshot is either black or pukegreen lol. These amateur flash graphics don't hold a candle to Brogue's clean and colourful ASCII aesthetic
I still can't figure out whether TOME is hideous on purpose
Filtered and stat checked hard. Low INT and taste.
moron
>map is literally called "slime tunnels"
>hurr durr it's green
maybe it really is too big for your head
>single player roguelike that plays like an mmo
hard pass
this
but also brogue isnt an rpg
Tome is also crack.
You will become addicted to crack.
You will cease get work done.
I agree, these INTlets will say otherwise because "le ASCII greffiks makes me kewl 1337 hardcore gamer".
I wanted to like it, but mostly everything is just so goddamn boring in it I can't bear it.
enemies are 99% trash, loot is 99% trash, skills are 99% trash, classes are 99% trash
it's just huge amounts of TRASH everywhere
even the uniques are mostly boring as shit. god damnit.
and every single game plays 99% exactly the same as any other.
and the dev crying for donations all the time... frick that game.
"Digital diarrhea" describes Tome 4's visuals perfectly, and its shitty MMORPG combat is a huge step down from traditional roguelike combat.
Brogue is too simplistic and barren to be interesting, it's on the level of things like Haque, a nice and overall well designed curiosity for casual playthroughs with some quirky ideas, but nothing that can hold your attention for long if you have actual experience with the genre.
By simplistic you mean there aren't 100 different weapons and armors with marginally different values and meme names
No item in Brogue is as cool or memorable as Adom's trident of the red rooster, Larn's pance of death, or Nethack's wand of wishing.
Lance of death, whoops
Tell me you've never played the original without telling me.
I haven't played a real roguelike in like 12 years, Crawl was the last one
What's something super light I can use to ease back into the genre? I've played Nethack/ADOM/Angband/Crawl to the point I was sick of them.
maybe not the super lightest, but play UnReal World.
Shiren the Wanderer is really easy to pick up and play, doesn't take terribly long to play through, and it's as deep, challenging, and fun as any of the best games in the genre. It does have a roguelite item inheritance feature but you can just ignore it, it's never required.
Best single player RPG I ever played? Probably Pokemon. It's so easy to get immersed in it.
Most immersed I have ever been in a single player rpg?
Reading the dialogue between the mc and all the romanceable girls in baldurs gate 2. Really borderline schizo behavior but whatever.
BEST RPG OVERALK?
That goes to Anarchy Online. Its a really old mmorpg, and you can't play it anymore like it was 10-15 years ago because the playerbase is like 1% of what it was.
Worst shit genre that ever existed.
