While an account is required, Overwatch 2 doesn't launch Battle.net. Diablo 4 should work the same way.
They need a means of selling this game in China after losing their netease partnership. Going through Steam is pretty much the only option they have.

After they made every server PvE with the Reddit Mode addition in BfA I stopped caring about the other players, it's all about alts and profession/AH/mountsmogscheevos autism for me.
I just don't get anything from amassing tons of gold or having 500+ mounts I never use. There's 0 dopamine in getting a drop that I know will just be a +1 in an achievement. I like chatting with people while doing hard content but there's no people I want to chat with and the content isn't even that hard just timegated by poor balance and item drops.
I also play Hearthstone so whenever I get bored of WoW I swap all my gold into Battle.net balance to buy packs there. In theory you could also buy other Blizzard games too but sadly they are garbage.
I guess that makes sense, if I could trade gold into master duel cards I'd probably care a bit more about it
