Mid-tier at best. Y'know for a game about a greedy character, there are less coins involved than in a typical Mario title. They could've been more creative and made it a fast paced, arcadey game where you collect coins to maintain a timer and find treasures along the way. As is, it was just your typical platformer and it was very slow paced too. They could've done a better job.

It's not. It's slow, replaces Mario's fun platforming with basically cinematic interactions and wackiness and has unpolished moments

What is it doing you think is exceptionally great? Anything specific? Can you timestamp a video?

This is really what Nintendo fans are calling "so fricking good", LOL.

this games has always sucked ass. 2 is where the series starts to have interesting elements.

we do like wario land. the good ones.

damn, everybody shitting on this game?
it's more fun than the other mario land games. the jet hat is such a fun powerup

The world map is better than any mario game. The fact that levels change and evolve as you progress is great.
Multiple exits is great for replayability.
Multiple endings is great for replayability.

That said, it is slow as frick. And the large character size makes the slow movement even worse.
Virtual Boy Wario Land was the pinacle of this style of Wario game. Much better for controls, character size, etc, but lost all the uniqueness of levels, overworld, etc.

it plays better but its unfortunately way too short. and the game is literally designed to be speedrun

Go back and try and play it again. The jet pack is quicker, but it's still too slow.

It's good but the sequels are better. Wario Land 2 making Wario into more of an anti-Mario by making all his power ups into transformations that often have more downsides that positives was genius.

You know why they still called it SMB3? It still plays like a Mario game.

That being said, what's with the sudden hate for it?

      SMW2 doesn't play like a Mario game

That's why it wasn't called Super Mario World 2 instead some stupid western marketing Black folk put that bullshit on the title. It was just Super Mario: Yoshi Island (not Yoshi's Island, but Yoshi Island)

It's still called SUPER MARIO: Yossy Island, like you just posted, pretentious moron.

A lot of anons have more nostalgia for any Wario game after this one, since they didn't get a Game Boy before Pokemon and didn't know about Wario before MK64. Then they played this one after Wario Land 2 and (on an emulator) VBWL, this one being too hard or not niche enough for them than those. That's all that this comes down to.

Great action platformer. It's slower paced than a Mario game, which fits Wario's fatter, less agile shape than that if Mario, but at the same time it has the dash function, and it works so well, Wario has a weigth to him and tackling enemies then comboing various at the same time, chaining one attack after the other. Satisfying stuff. The platforming is nice too but mostly relies on exploration more like SMW or even Metroid inspired level design.
Speaking of SMW I like how the underground cavern parts of the levels look like the underground SMW backgrounds, what with the circular stalagmites/stalactites, also the forest map looking like a fiendish version of SMW's Forest of Illusion.

I like being able to weaponize coins, and doing that cool thing where you do a shoulder tackle and then jump for a BIG extended jump. Also for some reason holding up while you jump makes you move faster, so if you chain jumps while holding up, you can move pretty fast.

I've read about anons boldly claiming that they drop shitty bait posts in threads simply to stir shit up, and I'm 99% sure this post is one of those.

It's sad to see people shitting up /vr/ for stupid reasons like this.

Yes it's a great game. I didn't play it when it was new. Wario as a character didn't interest me as a kid. The first time I played a Wario game was a few years ago, well into my thirties. I was surprised how good the games are. It feels ideas that were a little too "experimental" to be in a Mario game were put into Wario games.

Context is everything. This was only the second Mario game with a heavy focus on secrets and exploration, and maybe the first that was actually a collect-a-thon. The slower pace and boss-mode Wario not taking damage from every enemy was also new and a welcome change. This is legit one of the first comfy games ever. But I can see how new players might not like it today.

I can’t get into any of the Wario games. The levels seems badly designed, compared to what you see in Mario games. It feels like they were made in a level editor by eye, rather than by feel. It doesn’t feel good to move around the levels is what I’m saying.

They intentionally made it play slightly differently: Wario is a bad guy and a literal boss, so bumping into enemies hurts them (but he's also a Mario-wannabe but fatter and bigger, so he gets powerups and jumps and "runs" (via the bull-rushing) but does so much more slowly and clunkily). It's not only trying to add something different to the established Mario gameplay, but it's also parodying it, so it makes sense if that's not what you're looking to play as a classic Mario fan.

I love Wario Land. Hearing stage theme 7 and replaying the first level in Parsley Woods after draining the lake to get the treasure are my fondest memories of the game.

So many shitters who must have started on GBA ITT. this was my first game ever back in ‘99. I still have it and it was a blast to play, still is even now. I don’t get the hate unless you started on the newer games and can’t appreciate the original.

      >I don’t get the hate unless you started on the newer games and can’t appreciate the original.
That's what this thread sounds like. Not every game has to be perfectly unique on the first entry. The game rewards you for exploring and finding secrets. The characters have a lot of charm. Soundtrack is great. I could pick this game up and replay it any day and enjoy it.

I think the sequels are stronger and I don't really like the hat power-up approach but it's a fun game. You should also try the VB game since it's closer in design to 1.

It's a good start of great series, considering gameboy limits.
