It works. It's not ideal even putting aside the handful of games that never worked properly on PS2 purely because the PS2 activates different compatibility modes depending on the game and the way Tonyhax works you're stuck with whatever settings go with your entry point game.
Do both tonyhaxx and mechapawn allow you to use the PS1 hardware? Is there anything at all that makes it so you can use the PS1 hardware on PS2 without needing to burn discs?
>Is there anything at all that makes it so you can use the PS1 hardware on PS2 without needing to burn discs?
No. I can't believe it either. I blame garbage like POPstarter existing because it means most people will say "it's good enough" despite it being shit and then nobody will ever make anything better.
>nobody will ever make anything better
Wisi W has been working on DKWDRV, a replacement PS1 driver. Wisi's released a proof of concept video of USB loading with it but the homosexual hasn't uploaded that build. Apparently it only works with PAL games at the moment too.
hugopocked has been studying MIPS assembly to make POPStarter more accurate. POPStarter obviously isn't perfect but there's a decent sum of games for which it absolutely is indistinguishable from real hardware, even more so thanks to hugopocked.
>Apparently it only works with PAL games at the moment too.
It will also only work on DECKARD consoles, aka Slim consoles with the semi-emulated PS1 hardware. That's what makes it possible.
This IMO largely nullifies its usefulness.
I'm just sticking with emulation for PS1 games now, whatever, it works better than these headaches.
yeah but that tends to cause fewer compatibility issues because gpu timing matters much less. even real ps1s are able to use two completely different gpus without causing any trouble.

Damn dkwdrv is only for slims?! I was curious about it but I hate slims, they're useless. Guess the only hope now is hugo tard-wrangling popstarter into a beast, at least he's making progress. The PS1 backup albatross may never be figured out in our lifetimes, it sucks.
DKWDRV works on all PS2s, but has additional features which only work on the later Slims.
USB loading is one of those Slim-only features, but doesn't have a public release anyway.

After all of these years imagine my surprise when I found out you can’t boot ps1 games off of a HDD on a ps2.
Just install Duckstation and runs every ps1 games perfectly fine with default settings. Just make sure the emulation runs on hardware, not software. Boom, have fun. Took you 5 fricking minutes to download, install, make a directionary path for the roms.

Sell / junk it, buy mechapwn-compatible model, burn CDs.
Avoid deckard models, popstation, softmods etc. This is the only viable solution outside of modchipping. You don't want to be some moron having to boot up tony hawks pro skater each time you want to play MGS.
Install a modchip asap
tonyhax is your only softmod option
Some homosexual told me it was only possible on 5000 and up models
Mechapwn is only possible on 50000 and up models. Mechapwn is the more convenient exploit, but tonyhax will work on earlier US and European models.
Tonyhax only works on the earliest PS2 models (SCPH-10000-SCPH-39004). Make sure to use Tonyhax International for improved compatibility.

All PS2's emulate the PS1; Phat models have the MIPS 34K but not the GPU

They make you convert the file via a laptop
I tried converting it with a phone and didn't work
Yes the PS2 will play them
Probably endianess of the file being converted.
All this effort should just go into a PS2 ODE already
PS1 odes are so expensive though, what am I supposed to do? and I need a pico psu too
Swanstation is free
emulators just work like shit for me
Imagine being so moronic you can't even emulate ps1
I want hardware man
Just install Duckstation and runs every ps1 games perfectly fine with default settings. Just make sure the emulation runs on hardware, not software. Boom, have fun. Took you 5 fricking minutes to download, install, make a directionary path for the roms.
What happened to the psone ode?
get an xstation mod. Since I have this I sold all my ps1 discs exept of a few ones I keep, because of my childish nostalgia
You payin?
All these hack names sounds so fricking moronic holy shit.
Yeah. Chop a hole in the top and install a hinged door. Then get a GameShark, go to start game, open the top and switch discs and hit start
