Necrons were no longer ridiculously overpowered, vehicles were nerfed so you actually have a reason to build infantry, the morale system actually started to matter and gave you a reason to buy flamers and shit, and stealth units are finally worth using.

I was the #1 Chaos globally at some point, literally all I ever did was go Nurgle or Slaanesh then just take a fleet of 6x Slaughter cruisers. Their speed and DPS combo could pick apart virtually any enemy and the only players who ever gave me trouble were the highest level drukhari players
What is your opinion on the Styx? It's my old warhorse but i'm interested in the perspective of a pro. I usually fill my fleet out with them then use the squadrons to cripple threats.

The Styx was my go-to for PvE only because I also enjoy carriers (And they paired well with me being a Tzeentchgay), but there are too many ways for players to counter squadrons in PvP;
Orks just do squadrons better than anyone else;
Necrons completely shut them down;
Eldar do them better and can just avoid them anyways if they're not trash
And most players I ran into were either Orks, Necron, or Eldar
Tau Merchants were really annoying to fight and they gave me the most trouble outside of Drukhari, but Protectors were hilariously easy

Yeah see I did quite well against ai with my Styx and fell in love with it but it never really carried over to fighting players. Whats your thoughts on the bigger ships as I've read some people say it is better to just get more smaller ones for the price.

It's been a real long time so my memory is spotty but it depended on the faction you were playing. Bigger ships weren't worthwhile as Chaos because the cruisers/BCs were the only viable ships whereas other factions had more options; Drukhari wanted to be using their biggest ships to reduce the number of vessels you had to be microing at a time; they would take 3 battleships and juggle the three of them across the entire map. Orks I don't terribly recall but the Deadnot Urd Unki had the most cost efficient squadrons in the entire game; I think Cairns were the most popular among Necrons until the update that added the... I think Scythe? Reaper? something like that.
Tau Protector players almost always were rocking a Custodian or a pair of them and they were my favorite players to fight because they would think they could just stand-off and shoot me to death but I'd simply just run in with all 6 Slaughters and focus it down; the rest of the fleet came easy after that.
Merchant players though brought tough Bastions and they especially brought Kroot Warspheres which were probably one of the most annoying ships to fight in the game, I don't remember exactly why but I think it had something to do with them just countering my playstyle.
It's pretty good, the lines are memorable but obviously as it's a semi-serious WW2 game you don't get the sheer madness and memability of the Dawn of War lines >JESUS Conrad TIE your FRICKING LACES

Besides the story of Retri being a joke, only being there to facilitate multiple factions at once, the move to individual characters also worsened things for me somehow. One thing I enjoy a lot about 2 is the RPG stuff, seeing your characters or squads grow a lot, going from lowly space marines to hunkin terminators for example. All of this falls flat in Retribution, partly due to how shot everything is, but also since everyone feels like a throwaway character, plus the story playing like skirmish with random unit summoning.

idk, it was pretty shit, especially Retribution which was basically just a boss rush mode where you could spawn adds.
But there was something appealing about the more refined squad tactics and controls. If only they were in a better game.

DOW is excellent as an RTS. DOWII is excellent as an RTT. Which one you like more depends on which genre/mechanics you enjoy more.

Comparing DoW1 and DoW2 is like comparing apples with lettuce.
They're both plants, and fibrous, and that's about it.
Fundamentally, they're both entirely different games in looks, feel, gameplay, and scale. I liked DoW2's multiplayer better, and Last Stand could have been really good if it wasn't an unbalanced crapshoot 85% of the time.
What mods are recommend for Soulstorm? I'm not that deep into WH 40K lore so I'm not that interested in any total overhauls that adds new factions or units since I won't understand the importance, but any QoL, visual upgrades, bugfixes and AI improvements would be great.
Apocalypse was pretty gopd back in the days. Even added a bunch of units and rebalanced everything. It's very zoomed out too so you can use dozens of units at a time including super tanks and flying units.
I don't know what's up with his voice acting in this game. Keith Szarabajka is a godlike voice actor and his performance as Diomedes is... eh.

In the older fluff that was ALWAYS the goal. The primarchs and their legions were just his foot soldiers to conquer everything to make a safe space for regular humans. it is why the thunder warriors got exterminated, they were just another tool to be used.
Isn't that well known? I thought that was the whole point of the original space marines? to pretty much be the ones at the front lines and regular humans just get to enjoy being gloriously human with Big E while he tried to help with the next stage of human evolution with psychers?
I think there is contention about the way he meant to deal with them afterwards. Was he going to delete them like the Thunder Warriors or would they get phased out in time.

He knew full well there was going to be a space marine rebellion and Chaos would make its move through corrupting the Warmaster. His goal was to manage the rebellion by shitting on the right Sons and selecting the least capable Warmaster. That's why he was intentionally such a shit father to certain Primarchs and why he choose Horus instead of better candidates. But it went breasts up because Fulgrim and Perturabo weren't supposed to fall and Magnus ruined the Webway Project. The end result was supposed to be the Astartes were swiftly culled to a manageable numbers in the controlled conflict, psykers would have a safe space to develop inside the Webway and Chaos would be deprived of influence. The long term goal might have been psykers would have eventually replaced the Astartes as the Emperor's chosen weapons and gotten rid off entirely and then the fight taken to the realms of the Chaos Gods in the Warp itself. Absolutely none of that happened. Because the Emperor is a very shitty parent.

Tl;Dr Big E thought it was a better idea to never teach his son's about chaos than warn them of it, so eventually some of them fricked around and found out, leading to them to regard E as a manipulative liar because clearly gods exist and are powerful. It was pretty much Lorgar's right hand man that thought everyone about chaos, and it really really didn't help how shitty of a ruler Big E was.

Minotaurs were not a legion. Hell they aren't even a second founding (they are the infamous twenty first founding).
The Night Lords specifically either didn't care about the Imperium or felt betrayed by the Emperor for chastising them for doing what he created them for. Well it kind of depends on how you want to read it. In addition to other replies, Warrior Lodges had spread through virtually every legion (like fraternity unions of space marine purists/supremacists). These lodges were targeted by the earliest Word Bearer heretics since they were dismayed by what they saw as a growing disrespect for the astartes and legions by the emperor and the imperium as a whole. I would only recommend Deathwing if you really really like Space Hulk as a setting; it's got good atmosphere but otherwise isn't that great. Darktide is a better co-op shooter, Hired Gun and Boltgun are better singpleplayer shooters.

Mostly die hard read the novels based on the 40K lore, and lore does not matter. I just can't get into it bros. I've tried many games and I do not care for the squad shit. I enjoyed boltgun but I probably would have liked it with any other franchise.
It is an expensive hobby to begin with and it goes through editions faster than DnD. My advice is to find a group who sticks to a specific edition and than get figures for them. If you just wanted to try something out, there are 2k Point Value groups always looking to get people invested.

imo making all of the playable characters in darktide human was stupid. I dont give a frick if it breaks the lore. All of the fricking enemies are human, all of the players are human, everything's human. Nurgle zombies are fricking gay and fighting ratmen and northmen in VT2 was way cooler. Why the frick aren't there any bosses. What the frick is wrong with fatshark.
It's a Left4Dead ripoff and Nurgle cultists are the closest thing the setting has to zombies, so it makes sense. I'd rather fight any of the other three or Undivided though. Nurgle in general has the least personality and the worst aesthetics out of the Chaos factions.
Playing Ogryn really makes me wish there was a game like Darktide with Orks, they are just ogryn with more bants, and way more interesting weapons variety. Id like to see ther other races with this level of detail as enemies if not playable.
Also they COULD take us to other planets, do some about chaos cultists opening portals and you go behind enemy lines against non humans for that level where you are tasked with closing the portal. Shit, have it be that there are flat out different campaigns, so you can fight on Tertium with that selection of maps, or another planet where you fight behind enemy lines in an ongoing battle on another planet, we are on a ship after all, it can travel.

Devs are generally pretty cautious about making a non-human protagonist. Lots of ~~*market research*~~ has been done and if you have a non-human you get a big dip in sales or popularity of a character. Necrons were no longer ridiculously overpowered, vehicles were nerfed so you actually have a reason to build infantry, the morale system actually started to matter and gave you a reason to buy flamers and shit, and stealth units are finally worth using.
I'm nearly convinced people complain just because I wreck absolute shit with dark eldar. Even though they're almost universally considered the weakest faction, I still used to see hordes of morons begging to nerf them.

This is why you use a Chaos fleet of Styx's so you can strafe the knife ears with your squadrons then board with your Marines.
I was the #1 Chaos globally at some point, literally all I ever did was go Nurgle or Slaanesh then just take a fleet of 6x Slaughter cruisers. Their speed and DPS combo could pick apart virtually any enemy and the only players who ever gave me trouble were the highest level drukhari players
What is your opinion on the Styx? It's my old warhorse but i'm interested in the perspective of a pro. I usually fill my fleet out with them then use the squadrons to cripple threats.
The Styx was my go-to for PvE only because I also enjoy carriers (And they paired well with me being a Tzeentchgay), but there are too many ways for players to counter squadrons in PvP;
Orks just do squadrons better than anyone else;
Necrons completely shut them down;
Eldar do them better and can just avoid them anyways if they're not trash
And most players I ran into were either Orks, Necron, or Eldar
Tau Merchants were really annoying to fight and they gave me the most trouble outside of Drukhari, but Protectors were hilariously easy
Yeah see I did quite well against ai with my Styx and fell in love with it but it never really carried over to fighting players. Whats your thoughts on the bigger ships as I've read some people say it is better to just get more smaller ones for the price.
It's been a real long time so my memory is spotty but it depended on the faction you were playing. Bigger ships weren't worthwhile as Chaos because the cruisers/BCs were the only viable ships whereas other factions had more options; Drukhari wanted to be using their biggest ships to reduce the number of vessels you had to be microing at a time; they would take 3 battleships and juggle the three of them across the entire map. Orks I don't terribly recall but the Deadnot Urd Unki had the most cost efficient squadrons in the entire game; I think Cairns were the most popular among Necrons until the update that added the... I think Scythe? Reaper? something like that.
Tau Protector players almost always were rocking a Custodian or a pair of them and they were my favorite players to fight because they would think they could just stand-off and shoot me to death but I'd simply just run in with all 6 Slaughters and focus it down; the rest of the fleet came easy after that.
Merchant players though brought tough Bastions and they especially brought Kroot Warspheres which were probably one of the most annoying ships to fight in the game, I don't remember exactly why but I think it had something to do with them just countering my playstyle.

Not him, but I might prefer 2/ChaosRising over Retribution. Besides the story of Retri being a joke, only being there to facilitate multiple factions at once, the move to individual characters also worsened things for me somehow. One thing I enjoy a lot about 2 is the RPG stuff, seeing your characters or squads grow a lot, going from lowly space marines to hunkin terminators for example. All of this falls flat in Retribution, partly due to how shot everything is, but also since everyone feels like a throwaway character, plus the story playing like skirmish with random unit summoning.

DOW is excellent as an RTS. DOWII is excellent as an RTT. Which one you like more depends on which genre/mechanics you enjoy more.

Comparing DoW1 and DoW2 is like comparing apples with lettuce.
They're both plants, and fibrous, and that's about it.
Fundamentally, they're both entirely different games in looks, feel, gameplay, and scale.
I liked DoW2's multiplayer better, and Last Stand could have been really good if it wasn't an unbalanced crapshoot 85% of the time.

What mods are recommend for Soulstorm? I'm not that deep into WH 40K lore so I'm not that interested in any total overhauls that adds new factions or units since I won't understand the importance, but any QoL, visual upgrades, bugfixes and AI improvements would be great.
Apocalypse was pretty gopd back in the days. Even added a bunch of units and rebalanced everything. It's very zoomed out too so you can use dozens of units at a time including super tanks and flying units.
Can't wait for Space Marine 2.

It got out that the Emperor secretly created a civilian government that was undermining the Space Marine legion authority and was going to replace the legion rule of the Imperium. This was one of the reasons why the traitors did what they did. The Emperor was favoring flawed and weak men over his own angels and sons who actually built the Imperium with their sweat and blood.

In the older fluff that was ALWAYS the goal. The primarchs and their legions were just his foot soldiers to conquer everything to make a safe space for regular humans. it is why the thunder warriors got exterminated, they were just another tool to be used.

He knew full well there was going to be a space marine rebellion and Chaos would make its move through corrupting the Warmaster. His goal was to manage the rebellion by shitting on the right Sons and selecting the least capable Warmaster. That's why he was intentionally such a shit father to certain Primarchs and why he choose Horus instead of better candidates. But it went breasts up because Fulgrim and Perturabo weren't supposed to fall and Magnus ruined the Webway Project. The end result was supposed to be the Astartes were swiftly culled to a manageable numbers in the controlled conflict, psykers would have a safe space to develop inside the Webway and Chaos would be deprived of influence. The long term goal might have been psykers would have eventually replaced the Astartes as the Emperor's chosen weapons and gotten rid off entirely and then the fight taken to the realms of the Chaos Gods in the Warp itself. Absolutely none of that happened. Because the Emperor is a very shitty parent.

In most books, Eldar are secondary characters, plot devices or mooks getting killed by protags. Eldrad Ulthran and Yvraine are the only ones getting things done.

I would only recommend Deathwing if you really really like Space Hulk as a setting; it's got good atmosphere but otherwise isn't that great. Darktide is a better co-op shooter, Hired Gun and Boltgun are better singpleplayer shooters.

So my experience with Pathfinder: Kingmaker was opening the game, staring at the character creation screen for five minutes like a deer staring at the headlights of a truck, and then closing the game. Is that new Rogue Trader game a bit more penetrable for someone like me?
Yes, D100 is more intuitive generally. Want to hit harder? Take the strength bonuses. Want to hit more often? Take weapon skill. Want to have more health? Go toughness. There no BaB, no multiclassing, no AC stacking but can't be the same type of bonus type bullshit. Tactics also matter, and if you are still a moron and frick up you can just take Cassia with you and let her use autistic stare.

It is an expensive hobby to begin with and it goes through editions faster than DnD. My advice is to find a group who sticks to a specific edition and than get figures for them. If you just wanted to try something out, there are 2k Point Value groups always looking to get people invested.

All of the fricking enemies are human, all of the players are human, everything's human. Nurgle zombies are fricking gay and fighting ratmen and northmen in VT2 was way cooler. It's a Left4Dead ripoff and Nurgle cultists are the closest thing the setting has to zombies, so it makes sense. I'd rather fight any of the other three or Undivided though. Nurgle in general has the least personality and the worst aesthetics out of the Chaos factions.
Playing Ogryn really makes me wish there was a game like Darktide with Orks, they are just ogryn with more bants, and way more interesting weapons variety. Id like to see ther other races with this level of detail as enemies if not playable.
Also they COULD take us to other planets, do some about chaos cultists opening portals and you go behind enemy lines against non humans for that level where you are tasked with closing the portal. Shit, have it be that there are flat out different campaigns, so you can fight on Tertium with that selection of maps, or another planet where you fight behind enemy lines in an ongoing battle on another planet, we are on a ship after all, it can travel.

Lots of ~~*market research*~~ has been done and if you have a non-human you get a big dip in sales or popularity of a character.
