Like, I think Pizza Tower is kinda ugly, but it kinda works there since it fits the surreal 00's cartoon atmosphere. Eventually I grew to love the artstyle.
I haven't actually played this game, so maybe it totally works in context, but from far away it kinda looks like its main problem is it's too horny. You can't make people horny and then tell them the artstyle is ugly, it's conflicting appeals. When I look at Peppino, I don't want to be reminded of sex, I want to think "wow this is like a fever dream".
You can add a dash of degeneracy for the atmosphere, maybe, but not make the main character a damn sex bot out on a quest to frick or whatever.
If you frontload the horny, people get the idea they will see something sexy, then you don't show them something sexy and they feel betrayed. If you just postponed it a bit, then they wouldn't feel they're owed hot women and might feel better.
The gameplay does look fun, though. Dunno if it actually is.
Personally I don't mind whether the character is sexy. A character doesn't have to be sexy to be horny. You can put eyelashes on a literal stick figure and make porn out of it, and while it might come across as more silly than horny to most people, I don't think most people would see it as offputting.
The main problem is that the character just looks ugly. Not in a Peppino way where he's simply not attractive and some of his features are cartoonishly exagerrated, but in a "haircut that's bad without being absurd or silly, bulbous chin and constantly upturned head that makes it look like she has no chin at all in spite of the clear head silhouette, torso shaped like a full garbage bag, cankles that go all the way up to her pelvis" way. It's not just not attractive, it's UNattractive.
You could make the main character a literal T-800 terminator with no skin or sexual characteristics at all, simply give it pink eyes and say that it's female, and it would probably be less offputting than the current design even in the horny context.

Sundered is absolute fricking garbage, the art style can't save the major flaws the game has, namely the roguelike aspects colliding with the metroidvania mechanics and the shitty way the skill tree works.
Sundered and Timespinner are the two worst metroidvanias I had the displeasure to play, I won't play this shit game just to make the unholy trifecta of shit metroidvanias, no thanks.
I enjoyed Sundered for what it is and have cleared a corruption, pure and mixed route for all final bosses, but i'd call it decent at best. The major boss fights are really intimidating just for their sheer size and animation quality and it has some interesting ways to go about skill progression, but the game REALLY suffers from the randomized layouts as the metroidvania genre lives from exploration, but instead it has you walking through generic copypasted layouts instead of memorable setpieces.
Also the corruption powers are much more interesting than the "pure" perks and there's no reason to go for a non-corrupted run other than completionism

They don't have to be. I don't know anything about the team, but do they even have seed money to budget? A kickstarter or shareholders?
If this was just a handful of friends doing a project in their spare time, they can afford to take risks because all they're risking is the time they put in. That's not nothing, of course, but they aren't necessarily going to lose their houses if the game doesn't sell, in that case. Even for hand-drawn art like this, a few people might be able to churn out this much in a few years if they worked on it diligently with a lot of their spare time.

Not all newbie, plenty of game are/were forbidden to discuss on Ganker.
That is mostly due to the nature of the games themselves like them fighting herds and console war shit, not because of Ganker hating on it, and who are you calling a newbie? you fricking election tourist.
Except there are case of game shit on solely because the protag doesnt fit what Ganker like and other surface level shit that doesnt require to play the game.

I'm wanting to make a power couple action game featuring a basic swashbuckler and sage/mage, if I were upfront and presented a demo would the 'shill' thing be to gay or would it be fine being transparent. I ask because this and the other Cookie Cutter thread makes me believe Q&A with Ganker isn't impossible, just can't be played in a passive aggressive way.
Yeah, just be patient and don't get defensive, no matter how unhelpful the comments are. This dev tried to damage control and only made it worse. If people are interested, the constructive criticism will come, even if it's the minority of posts, and it likely will be.
There have been several devs on Ganker presenting their games with several degrees of feedback from positive to simply calling the dev shill and to kill himself, it all depends on the game you are making and if Ganker generally likes it or not.
For example the coomer shooter game made by an anon, he usually posts his game, his demo and get positive feedback, but he does it on threads not entirely dedicated to his game but the occasional game engines and related threads.
I'm monitoring this thread for what to do/NOT to do and so far my only takeaway is "have a good artstyle and character designs" which is SUPER subjective. Just the art alone made people assume the devs political opinions (which so far, other evidence has shown to be the opposite to the assumptions)
I also probably wouldn't shit on any other titles/make weird dick references but I wasn't going to do that anyway.

I think a cohesive setting and tone and good presentation is always important. Graphical fidelity is one thing, hand drawn is also another, but there's still a gradient of how much someone wants to focus on assets across the board. If it's consistent I think that is a point towards the game.
If you are going for your own style that you think might be off putting to some people, don't respond to criticism like this:
Filter the feedback you get and think about it for next time you decide to shill.

If anything, undertale is a showcase that ugly characters can be appeaing.
The designs in Undertale are mostyl minimalist with pixel art, this is hand drawn in some Adobe software with western sensibilities and the added effect of trying to be non-conforming in look. One is easier to appeal to a board audience, the other is hyper focusing on being niche.
How could small devs get any feedback from here, when people admittedly almost never play games unless its a big release?
There are hundreds of indies released every day, expecting the entire board to play yours because you posted about it is insanity, just be happy you get contrarians who will play anything Ganker hates and move on.
