          >Team composition, different builds
          >Battles
          >Boss fights
It's easy for me to forget too, since what's missing is so glaring, but SMT got a lot right. A lot less than its fans will remember and a lot more than its critics will admit

The UI doesn't really fit with the overworld which doesn't fit with the enemy designs which don't fit the particle effects. It doesn't look "bad" just less than the sum of its parts. The yellow dodecahedrons scattered around the map look like outright shit though.

Interesting perspective. I never noticed it, but I'll keep an eye on it this run and see if I agree

My local university sends people to Europe so often it's almost as if they wanted to get rid of them.
Going there isn't a real problem. The problem is getting accepted into ESA while you're there. If you don't and your time overseas is over by then, you're out of luck.
It's a really moronic way to try to get into a marathon, but a damn impressive one if anyone manages to pull it off.

                YOU CAN LIVE IN TEXAS
YOU CAN SPEEDRUN A GAME FAST
YOU CAN APPLY TO ESA IN-PERSON
                THEY SAY OKAY
this is where the airplane comes in
                YOU CAN FLY TO SWEDEN

                here's the tricky one
YOU CAN FLY BACK TO TEXAS
                YOU STILL LIVE IN TEXAS

I'm going to assume you know what an airplane is, because it's important to this whole concept
                YOU CAN LIVE IN TEXAS
YOU CAN SPEEDRUN A GAME FAST
YOU CAN APPLY TO ESA IN-PERSON
                THEY SAY OKAY
this is where the airplane comes in
                YOU CAN FLY TO SWEDEN
YOU CAN RUN YOUR GAME IN-PERSON
                here's the tricky one
YOU CAN FLY BACK TO TEXAS
                YOU STILL LIVE IN TEXAS

This is such a weird plan. If you have a job in the first place, why would you not just save up money for a trip AFTER you speedrun a game for half a year and get a decent record and get accepted? Why are you going to college and then the exchange program before even trying to run a game? This whole thing is moronic.

I don't think anyone would ever do all this convoluted shit just to appear at an obscure speedrunning marathon. But then again, if this pushes someone to start changing their life, might as well leave it be, unless they get into debt to do all this shit.

How much are hotel prices to stay at BSG? Find it weird seeing London landmark pictures in a Dutch hotel when I am actually unironically from London.

Bout 82 bucks a night per room. The rooms here are named after cities. Amsterdam, London, Paris, Manhatten (in that spelling).
Esa has the same with regionally named rooms.

Normally BSG is so-so but I'm baffled by how watchable this year is. Today's been good too and has a lot going for it. Honestly the only dud looks to be Fire Emblem later on because I know that'll be just Warp spamming on loop

It's our secret stream. Surprised there's a thread at all. People were just discussing it in the RTAIJ and FF threads. I once checked for "BSG" and got no results and decided maybe it was best that way.

The current game being run feels like a typical marathon. But I don't know if they enforce really anything -- one of the people I saw running the game was just talking to himself like not trying to key the audience in at all.

      Anonymous

Slow threads so they're not constantly on page 1, also its been a secondary focus this year as it's ran through two major events:

It's why despite ESA being generally higher quality than GDQ, the GDQ threads are far more popular because people just love to whine about troons.
I will never understand living your life in a way where you actively seek out things that upset you.

I noticed it a lot on day 1 of ESA too
              >"ANY TROONS YET?"
              >"WHERE ARE THE TRANNIES?"
              >"IS THIS PERSON A troony?"
              >"THERE'S NO TROONS WHERE ARE THE TROONS?"
              >"THE PERSON COMING UP HAS GIRL IN THEIR NAME, IS IT A TROON?"
              >"IS THE LADY DOING THE PRIZE SEGMENTS A TROON OR REAL GIRL???"

I liked the run, but it was a 4 hour long Jrpg run and you already know what people in here think about those. And in top of that it was a race, so you already knew how low the score would be right from the start.
What really killed the mood for what I would consider a comfy run was the other guy running alongside her.
He had that weird main protagonist syndrome and always tried to make everything revolving around him.
It was pretty satisfying to watch him get rekt, then he trying to simp for the girl and the girl starting to simp for the WR holder instead. And then refusing to hug the guy and instead going for the weirdest handshake was the cherry on top.

It was also pokemon, which for some reason is cursed to almost never have good runs during a marathon. There is always one runner ruining the run, so it never gets comfy. The strategies most of the time are also always really boring, since it is just get the strongest mon and keep using that singular mon. So not only do the jrpg haters rate it low, the fans of rpg runs also don't get what they are looking for and thus also rate it low. Only Werster getting fricked by RNG can get high rating with pokemon

Frick me, you're right. This game was run in 2 different marathons and both of them were cursed with one person being obnoxious as hell. Being a Pokémon fan must be a nightmare.

With a Pokemon run you have like a 5% chance of it being good, which isn't high odds. You're mostly either gonna get:
              >3 - 4 hour borefest
              >Keizaron over estimate run
              >Randomizers (boring, they always "coincidentally" get the best TMs and mons at the start)
              >A 3 - 4 hour Keizaron over estimate randomizer borefest (most likely)

I feel like Pokemon must be similar to me and Final Fantasy. When you get an actual good runner (See: FF9 at ESA summer this year) its absolutely gold, but they're rarely a good runner and because they're so long the runs end up VERY boring. And its not like there isn't good runners for Pokemon/FF its just the event orgnaizers keep choosing the absolute worst people for them.

                >Submit Colo again, this time Starter Bidwar as I'm feeling more confident
                >Eva and Juan submit a race of the exact same category and didn't tell me anything about it
                >Feel left out, don't say anything
                >It's also my first time on the scheduling team
                >Eventually we have to choose the Pokémon runs, I'll be very honest they were all garbage except TTS on White 2, we just don't have good Pokémon runners submitting to ESA, if I had Werster I'd accept that in a heartbeat
                >The team ask me about the Colo, I am honest with them. I'm on the same level as Eva, but the race with Juan would not work because he's a very good router but can't actually run the game to save his life
                >The team suggests me and Eva race instead, ask the three of them and they agree, settle on Umbreon vs Croc to make the routes as even as possible
                >Bummed out but at least I'll be in control of the "fish" so those jokes shouldn't happen as much
                >Learn Croc from scratch, feeling good on the day of the race
                >get manip, fall behind because of it
                >whatever, expected
                >then the emulator starts spazzing out
                >then I die to Cail
                >then the RNG continues to test my patience
                >and all the time the three of them are all focused on Eva's run because she's in the lead
                >the biggest draw of the race was being able to compare the two routes and I just couldn't find an opening to speak
                >Eva throws hardcore though so 3/3 races won on ESA

Needless to say, I am not submitting the GameCubes Pokémon games, probably in any other marathon setting again. I might do All Battle CDs, but that's something I can handle on my own or bully my husband to help out with

Whenever I see a Pokemon run at an event that isn't a randomizer it seems to be a race. Are people submitting them as races or is it a meet in the middle sort of thing when too many people submit the same thing?

Most of the time runs are taken as they are submitted, its usually runners themselves who ask to be joined as a race and not the other way around.

360Chrism's run was alright too for a randomizer, until he got Mewtwo or whatever early on and steamrolled the rest.

The issue with Pokemon runs is this: At some point they get a TM or an item or Pokemon that they need, and from that point on the game becomes trivial and they start steamrolling. There's no tension or excitement because they know they're not gonna fail and we know they're not gonna fail. However, Pokemon runs are long runs, so sometimes there'll be an entire 1 - 2 hours after they get to that overpowered point before the run ends.

The reason why people like Werster are considered good runners and their runs are always memorable is because they don't go the safe route, they don't pick up that OP TM or HM or Pokemon because they know the rest of the run won't be exciting. They take the risks, the potential run ender risks, because Pokemon runs aren't exciting to watch otherwise, unless you're a huge Pokemon game fan and we can assume on an event like a GDQ or ESA, where its a variety of different people watching, that they're not huge Pokemon game fans. It's why at AUS, despite Werster's run being an overestimate mercy kill, his run was still considered the best one of the entire event, and it was the highest viewed. Because he made the run exciting by taking risks, those risks just didn't pay off.

But for whatever reason all the really good Pokemon runners don't submit for speedrun events, no idea why, so what we're left with are the middling runners who are more concerned about PBs that they choose all the safe strats, which is not entertaining to watch.

Also Pokemon randomizers are poison, GDQ don't get that but I hope ESA will. Watching someone "coincidentally" get an OP Pokemon or move in the first 10 minutes, then they can steamroll the rest of the game for 2 hours isnt fun to watch.

You're comparing a randomizer to a vanilla run, which isn't inherently fair.
The risks on the randomizer are playing the rando itself, you can tailor it to your hearts content in order to make yourself (and your audience) suffer as much as possible, but randos also have the inevitable "I solved the puzzle therefore I can go freely now" problem, it just so happened very early in Chrism's run, I was on the audience and don't think it was staged, but that's impossible to prove either way. Randos are hard to balance for entertainment, difficulty and estimate into account, and that is the reason why we took very few this time .
Good runners who take risks do submit to GDQ like Swift and Eddaket, they are cursed with the worst possible couch and atmosphere though.
I can't promise what ESA will or won't accept for the next event but I can promise to fight for Werster to be accepted, I just think it's unlikely he'll ever submit since he's from down under and disillusioned with the general marathon scene outside of ASM afaik

                Anonymous

I think its because in my opinion, randomizers are mostly a lose/lose situation. To be fair its not just Pokemon, I have this opinion on any randomizer but it just feels like in order to get a good randomizer run it has to be challenging enough to be exciting but not too exciting but because it is by nature entirely random you can't guarante that, in fact more often than not, it won't be that. Instead most randomizers I find are either super easy because they get what they need early on and just breeze through it (e.g. Chrism's run) or are too challenging to the point they can't beat it and it goes super over estimate (See Keizaron's SGDQ 2022 run)

They're definitely too much of a risk to put on IMO, because the reward of an entertaining run is too unlikely and the risks are too likely (run being too easy and its boring or it goes very under estimate, or the run goes over estimate etc.) unless its like an amazing runner or an amazing couch.

I think what would catch my interests in terms of Pokemon runs is if someone did a Nuzlocke

                >Nuzlock
Kaizo Nuzlocks are all the rage now but they are way too risky to thrown in a marathon setting unless you are willing to bite the bullet and walk out when your main does die

Speaking as a viewer I hate when a runner won't let a commentator get a word in, so I imagine it feels even worse being that commentator who can't get a word in. I honestly like Pokémon runs when things are explained and it doesn't feel like I got pulled into some random Discord with a million and one inside jokes, but unfortunately it only takes one person to drag something down. I've liked your commentary every time I've been around for it so from my perspective all you can do is keep at it and hope the schedulers don't hand you a shit sandwich in the future.

This also reminded me of an off-topic pet peeve but I gotta say it while I remember it: Speedrunners, please, if someone if commentating on your run and they go out of their way to elaborately explain something please don't just say 'Yeah so anyways...' and brush them off. You don't have to go full GDQ and pat them on the head like a puppy but give them something back, even if it's just a 'That's a good point.' I've seen quite a few commentators give up after they realise they don't need to be there and I always feel bad for them.

Yeah, it's not really a meltdown, but someone recognizing the run was a sham because they didn't explain shit to what was happening on screen and it was just 4 people playing on discord without any other context. Not even the people at GDQ knew what was going on, so I'm sure he's reflecting on that, rather than whatever shitposting happened in here during the run.
