>Build the settlement of my dreams
>It gets populated by a bunch of lifeless npcs with terrible path finding and an inability to use a door
What's the point?

is it possible to make it so your settlement can't get populated?

You have to actually assign them shit to do otherwise they will just stand around. They can find their way anywhere the bad path finding is a meme. Sometimes they end up on the roofs but they always teleport to where they are supposed to be.

Yes, just don't build the recruitment beacon.

These two sentences contradict each other. Yeah, they eventually get to where they are supposed to go, but I'm constantly watching my shopkeeps forget how to walk through an open doorway before finally teleporting inside the shop. It takes me out the game when I travel to a settlement and find settlers standing on roofs because they can't figure out how to enter a building.

Don't build the radio beacon and nobody will show up aside from the ones who already there.

You can also move anyone to any other settlement you have.

Just move them away dude. Or ignore them. I mean what are you doing, watching them at all hours just to catch them slipping up?

I wish settlements could've recruited unique quest giving NPCs. Settlements are pretty terrible beyond just building nice looking towns. I hope the next Fallout game cuts back a little and goes for more unique locations. Starfield doesn't give me hope, though.

Theres no hope abandon the franchise.

There's a few NPCs that open special shops (which you have to know about from outside sources as the game itself says nothing about it and build the specific types of commerce booths for them to use) but yeah there's no real individuality to any of them, even the Concord losers are all generic when it comes to actual settlement uses.

In survival mode the settlements serve as a food and water supply, and clean beds to save (sleep) at.

I hate the direction Bethesda is going with their games. Fallout 5 is going to be 90% settlement building, raider shooting galleries, and radiant quests from generic NPCs.

Settlement bullshit is the most annoying aspect of FO4. I would hate it less if everything you can build isn't soulless trash, but that's how it is. NPCs are worthless and raider get gibbed almost instantly by well placed missile turrets.

Also some settlements have raider/mutant spawn points inside the settlement so building walls actually serves no real purpose most of the time.

I am blaming the game. You can't clear out all the bombed out trash in Sanctuary and the "structures" you can build out basically have some bombed out trash look. Can't even build glass for some reason but you can build generators that never need fuel and magical water purifier bullshit.

settlement building would be cool if you could actually improve an area, but it's just organizing piles of shit and rickety walls into something that looks like a structure. 250 years since nuclear war and nobody is going to sweep a floor or move skeletons out of a house they're sleeping in? stupidest part about the fallout universe

    Rookie mistake.
Next time just build a shack with a power armor station, the crafting and cooking tables and a bed. Crazy hermit innawoods is the right way of playing FO4.

Youre supposed to build slave camps that farm resources instead of actual livable settlements.

And that's a shame. Settlement building seems like a good idea. It just feels under baked in Fallout 4.

I love how they don’t even get names, Bethesda gives so few fricks about their games
Like why even PRETEND they aren’t just completely interchangeable and meaningless lol

What a dumb thing to say, most games don't name all of their NPCs

Yeah and it’s lazy as frick and clear proof of not giving a frick. In cases where a character wouldn’t know names it can be excusable, but these are people putting their lives in your hand and joining your community and all any of them get for characterization is 1 shitty randomized line of dialogue and some rags
It’s hilariously half-assed and completely unjustifiable, if you pull Todd’s dick out of your throat before thinking about it

there's a mod called tales from the commonwealth that scatters various settlers with custom dialog, voice acting, and personalities throughout the map. The two first settlers you'll meet are an old guy who makes terrible puns and some autistic fujo chick who likes dnd. I basically ignore all generic vanilla settlers as well as preston and his merry band of wienersuckers and just use the modded npcs to populate sanctuary. It's actually kind of comfy.
