the Kernel is the part of your OS that talks to your hardware on the behalf of your programs.
Web browser wants to read from the keyboard in order to let you post on Ganker/v/, so it asks the OS which then supplies it via a Kernel routine.

Microsoft totally redid how sound drivers were supposed to work because vendors constantly wrote buggy crashing drivers that would bsod windows. Microsoft finally got windows to a place where it'll generally never blue screen unless something actually bad happened.

Now gaymers are going to destroy the stability of their computers because of this basically malware. Nevermind security implications. It's a nonstarter if you take privacy or security seriously.

I've heard shit like this for decades now, starting with Steam's release.
Does anyone have any examples or news articles of any company using kernel-level DRM to do anything malicious?
Or any examples or news articles of kernal-level software from a video game affecting someone's life?

The DRM aspect goes more into the philosophy of ownership, but it has been proven that DRM can negatively impact performance and also cause problems for any setup that isn’t a bog standard windows install.

As for the anticheat, I forget the name but recently some jap mmo had it exploited to steal some network information. And regardless, it’s not a good argument to make that it’s fine since it hasn’t caused problems yet.

“Well, the bomb hasn’t exploded and killed us yet, so I guess it’s fine to let it sit in our living room.”

So if it runs fine, there's no issue?

          >And regardless, it’s not a good argument to make that it’s fine since it hasn’t caused problems yet.
I'm not making an argument. I just think it's interesting how autistic people get about privacy or whatever, but three decades of internet later and not one studio's thought of being malicious with their kernel-level access.

            >So if it runs fine, there's no issue?

I fricking hate Capcom so goddamn much. Their old games are good but now my entire Steam collection is pozzed, I had to delete all my Capcom games because some moron in management decided to add third world DRM to fricking Resident Evil 5 and other decade old games.
