Yeah, these days especially are lacking in sincerity and passion. FF7 remake for example is the most horribly corporate garbage I've ever seen.
The only problem with the song is that they didn't get a singer who sounded more similar to Briana White. The Loren Allred version should have been saved for the album/end credits like Disney movies do. I don't know how they fricked that up. It's standard practice.
I hate people who say that they have the totally unique 200IQ idea that aerith dresses like a shy girl but acts like a tomboy (repeated ad infinitum) when that is completely wrong.
Aerith acts like a feminine girl, her occupation is being a florist, she helps in an orphanage, can talk to flowers, is a dainty magic princess and is bubbly and cheerful. All her animations are extra girly.
Just because she is also sassy and confident doesn't mean she is a tomboy.

Characters that aren't known for singing or dancing suddenly doing so perfectly is fricking lame. Rolled my eyes when the girls started dancing at the Golden Saucer in unison as if they choreographed it earlier.
I think it works because it's FFVII. People forget how goofy that game can get. I also think getting a deeper glimpse into these characters' inner selves, ESPECIALLY Aerith's, was something to behold. It made me feel almost guilty. Like all this time I spent with the original where I thought I knew these people I was really only seeing the superficial. And now the "real" person is in front of me.
You might as well complain about how the melee characters regularly fight characters or machines with rapid fire guns on an open field, but then all of a sudden Barret points his gun arm at the Turks and they put their hands up. Or how Barret let the president pull a gun on him even though he has a big ass gun himself. It's Final Fantasy, just turn your brain off bro.

Disney typically doesn't have the voice actors do the singing parts but they usually go to greater lengths to make it match better. Brad Kane sounded enough like Scott Weinger to pass as Aladdin's singing voice, for example. But what they did here was akin to using the Peabo Bryson version.
I also wish they foreshadowed it better. It was weird to just have Aerith randomly writing a song that just so happened to become part of her performance. They should have made more of an effort to establish that A) such a thing was happening at the Gold Saucer, and B) Aerith had an interest in it.
Or any kind of conversation where she wishes she could get something out there publicly, ya know? It's clear the underlying point of the song was that she had all this shit bubbling inside of her and needed to release it. All that passion just pouring out. Even if they didn't establish a specificity toward singing, they should have built up that pent up need to cut loose. She did have a bunch of scenes where she'd quietly stew but it wasn't a perfect connection.

If you listen to the npc conversations in the Ghost hotel before doing the date trigger you find out that they are doing a “You are Princess Rosa” song writing competition. Given that Aerith is the canon default Rosa I guess she has a natural crazy singing/songwriting talent on a first take kek

Of course you can disprove this by the hug and the scene afterwards or something, but there will always some minuscule lines that are easily interpretable in a malicious way.

nah, israelitetube is full of videos and comments about how FF6 is the superior, underrated RPG and how Kefka is a much more complex character and a much better villain than Sephiroth. They pop up in my feed because I watch FF7 content.
Cloud remembers things oddly in Rebirth's Nibelheim. Some scenes he remembers word for word out of Crisis Core's dialogue. Other lines are completely different, like the entire reactor scene.

These frickers featured Zack heavily in their promotions, even including him in the cover of the game, only to have his screen time be a total of 1 hour. The only notable thing he did that's connected to the main story is help Cloud fight Sephiroth. The remaining 59 minutes was some unexplained bullshit that added more questions about his existence than answers. Zack's presence and impact was already apparent in Remake, and they amped it up even more in Rebirth, especially when they reached Gongaga. The poem of Loveless that has a heavy presence and link to Zack was made into a play for Rebirth. The reunion flowers are brought up constantly in Rebirth as a sign of Aerith waking up and reuniting with Zack. Zack's road of taking hold of his fate and reaching his dreams get brought up again, only for us to see that he can't run away from his fate. Instead of elevating him, Zack is brought back to be cucked and be subject to a Final Destination run of fate where Shinra soldiers gun him down. Frick SquEn for baiting us with his return, frick them for shitting on Zack, and frick them for turning it into a convoluted shitshow.
They made major additions and changes from the original, even though they keep saying it's going to end the same as the original and tie in with AC. If things are just going to end the same way, what's the point of all the mess they're making with the story? I hope Rebirth's commercial failure becomes a reason for the writers to never write another convoluted mess again for future games.

To be fair, Aerith had a rough ride between OG FFVII and Remake. Square seemed to forget who she was for a long time and tried to turn her into pureness personified. People who latched onto that in stuff like Advent Children and even Kingdom Hearts ended up getting freaked out when Remake returned her original traits.
This is why I never recommend people play stuff "chronologically." It always comes off as weird and people end up not understanding things as well as they would playing them in release order.

I think the big problem is the way the game is structured clashes with the story they're trying to tell. The relationship mechanics of OG FFVII were hidden behind the curtain and there weren't THAT many situations where it was relevant. Here they put it front and center but since Aerith is fundamentally the central character of Rebirth she dominates everyone else.

Agreed. A friend of mine got Red XIII on his first playthrough and was kind of irritated. Especially since some of the conversations can be a bit...obtuse...as far as which response gets you the highest affinity. Plus if you get anyone other than Aerith the narrative just...doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Shit, even Red XIII makes it about her. Regardless of where Cloud and Tifa end up in OG FFVII or where they'll end up at the end of the next game, the way Rebirth as a microcosm is structured the Tifa date is premature. OG FFVII did make Aerith the easiest to get but the game didn't push them NEARLY as hard between leaving Midgar and the date itself. In Rebirth it's basically the Aerith show. Her's is the central character arc. I'd argue she's the real protagonist of Rebirth with Cloud serving as (a notoriously unreliable) POV character. She basically steals the show during Loveless which is kinda weird if you got anyone else. That doesn't happen in OG FFVII. You don't get the Tifa date and then Aerith is like "TOASTY!" popping out from the corner of the screen. But that's exactly what happens here.
I get why they did it. The baggage of OG FFVII meant they HAD to have a date mechanic and they expanded it to include more characters. Cool. Except the narrative they built specifically for Rebirth doesn't jive with it. Even if Cloud and Tifa turn out to be each other's one true love next game, you can't just jump the gun like that at the Gold Saucer.

I agree with everything you said, i just think that if the affinity system comes back it should be tied to other parts of the interaction system. You shouldnt be afraid of doing quests with either Tifa or Aerith if you want a specific date. It can ruin a lot of the narrative, even more in rebirth where caring about Aerith is very important. So by neglecting her a lot of her impact as a character is lost.

And this is that anon's point. Those character moments are too important to be so strongly tied to the date mechanic. If for whatever reason you're adamant about getting the Yuffie date you pretty much have no choice but to ignore Aerith and Tifa. Chapter Select makes it super easy to get the others but you'd think for a first playthrough they wouldn't have designed it so that there's an incentive to not talk to your party.

To preface, I obviously don't expect them to do this but it's one time I think it would make total sense if Cloud turned out to be a closet bisexual who had a crush on Sephiroth. It would actually make Sephiroth's behavior make more sense. He's a narcissist and sociopath who has access to Cloud's mind. He'd absolutely be the kind of piece of shit who'd exploit those insecurities. And Cloud being Cloud, it's not something he'd easily reconcile. Every thread you see trying to "explain" that dream date is mostly sophism. They know what it means and the implications of it, but discussing it or recognizing what happened there is annoying for them. So they at least try to warp the perception of it.

Unrelated but in an earlier thread I suggested using Ancient Greek math to measure the circumference of the planet with the shadows and, well...my results were not great. The maximum distance you can travel on a single continent is very small. The grasslands is only a little more than 2000m corner to corner. Then you're further limited by areas where you can get a good shadow on flat land. And even more, the "sun" in the game is uncooperative. I often measure no change in angle at all, indicating a flat planet, or if I do get a difference of a couple of degrees since it's over such a short distance you get a "planet" that's preposterously small. Like 200km in circumference.

I mean I really do like the remake, I enjoyed it more than some youtubers/internet say about it, and I don't mind how it handled so far.
At the same time I don't really trust Square ever since the 2000s that they spent most of their effort to please the West and imitate it.
I suppose square is big so there is probably different forces within the company doing their own thing ad businesses. It's hard what to support and trust a brand that I grew up with.
I have been an FF fan since I was a kid and the key is to simply have low expectation. Mechanics will change every iteration and that's okay, there will be some entries that are better than others and that's okay, 16 plays as DMC and to me, that's okay, because I mostly play FF for the story and experience, and not fully for the game mechanics. And the music never disappoints. Just make your own decision.

I feel like Tifa will have to get some kind of major moment because otherwise Sephiroth's taunting of Cloud over Tifa to try to split them up wouldn't have much of a purpose. He's clearly trying to prevent her from shaking Cloud free of his delusions. I guess he could succeed and Aerith would have to step in to fill the void but that would make the story so insanely lopsided that Tifa may as well not even be in the game at all.
The only revelations left from the original LS are that he's not a Soldier and his true role at Nibelheim. He learned everything else in Rebirth. I don't think that's how it works. Zack and Cloud met for the same reason Aerith was both dying and not dying at the same time. The universes were merging. By beating Sephiroth they interrupted the merger and the multiverse was thrown apart again. What the final merged universe looks like is up in the air but presumably there'd be just one of every person and each person's circumstances depends on which of the multiverses "win" in the final product.

Why is Zack alive in the main timeline but Aerith is dead? Shouldn't the worlds merge? Is there no penalty for the dead Tifas, Barrets, and Reds in the Zack timelines? Where's the timeline Cloud and party in alive Aerith timeline? Why did Sephiroth want to merge the worlds to kill Aerith but you see merging worlds as a way to revive Aerith? Learn what? Cloud don't know shit. He's still as lost as in part 1 and getting more and more unhinged by the moment, even more so than in the original game. Jenova is still controlling him and in his mid Aerith is still alive.

The planet's motivations are really weird now. It made sense in Remake when it was all about maintaining the OG events but now it isn't clear what exactly its doing. First it seems to help Tifa by prematurely giving her the visions from Cloud's mind and then saving her life, but later on the white ghosts are harassing everyone.
I love how they pull these bait and switches on people who know OG FFVII. Calling the merger of the multiverse "the reunion" and making that Sephiroth's major gambit was pretty sneaky.
What's funny is Sephiroth always seemed asexual to me. Like everything he's doing is clearly just to frick with Cloud's head. He seems too crazy to even think about sex.
I'm so obsessed with this game that I already got the platinum and now spend my free time watching other people play the game to try and feel like I'm experiencing the game for the first time through them.
And mind you, I didn't rush my playthrough, I spent my time and clocked over 300 hours by the end of it. Maxed out all the best materia, made all kind of weird builds and beat "Rulers of the Outer Worlds" like 50 times. Watched all kinds of videos on Tifa to maximize her stagger potential through different cancels that people have found out. I hope for Part 3 they keep making her more and more like a fighting game character but I think it's time to move on. There is nothing else for me to do in this game. I had the same issue when I played Persona 5. It was so hard to move on. I got Stellar Blade and still have not even touched it yet because all I can think about is FF7 Rebirth.

The only notable thing he did that's connected to the main story is help Cloud fight Sephiroth. The remaining 59 minutes was some unexplained bullshit that added more questions about his existence than answers. Zack's presence and impact was already apparent in Remake, and they amped it up even more in Rebirth, especially when they reached Gongaga. The poem of Loveless that has a heavy presence and link to Zack was made into a play for Rebirth. The reunion flowers are brought up constantly in Rebirth as a sign of Aerith waking up and reuniting with Zack. Zack's road of taking hold of his fate and reaching his dreams get brought up again, only for us to see that he can't run away from his fate. Instead of elevating him, Zack is brought back to be cucked and be subject to a Final Destination run of fate where Shinra soldiers gun him down. Frick SquEn for baiting us with his return, frick them for shitting on Zack, and frick them for turning it into a convoluted shitshow.
They made major additions and changes from the original, even though they keep saying it's going to end the same as the original and tie in with AC. If things are just going to end the same way, what's the point of all the mess they're making with the story? I hope Rebirth's commercial failure becomes a reason for the writers to never write another convoluted mess again for future games.

To be fair, Aerith had a rough ride between OG FFVII and Remake. Square seemed to forget who she was for a long time and tried to turn her into pureness personified. People who latched onto that in stuff like Advent Children and even Kingdom Hearts ended up getting freaked out when Remake returned her original traits.

It is fricked up because FF7 is so good when people can understand how important aerith and tifa are for Cloud. But then you see people having meltdowns when Cloud simply interacts with either of them. It is psychotic.

I think the big problem is the way the game is structured clashes with the story they're trying to tell. The relationship mechanics of OG FFVII were hidden behind the curtain and there weren't THAT many situations where it was relevant. Here they put it front and center but since Aerith is fundamentally the central character of Rebirth she dominates everyone else.
I really like the whole thing about giving different options but i dont think affinity should be tied to every fricking interaction you have with a character. It created a scenario where people actively ignore other characters they dont want in their date. And that's not how things should be.
Agreed. A friend of mine got Red XIII on his first playthrough and was kind of irritated. Especially since some of the conversations can be a bit...obtuse...as far as which response gets you the highest affinity. Plus if you get anyone other than Aerith the narrative just...doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Shit, even Red XIII makes it about her. Regardless of where Cloud and Tifa end up in OG FFVII or where they'll end up at the end of the next game, the way Rebirth as a microcosm is structured the Tifa date is premature. OG FFVII did make Aerith the easiest to get but the game didn't push them NEARLY as hard between leaving Midgar and the date itself. In Rebirth it's basically the Aerith show. Her's is the central character arc. I'd argue she's the real protagonist of Rebirth with Cloud serving as (a notoriously unreliable) POV character. She basically steals the show during Loveless which is kinda weird if you got anyone else. That doesn't happen in OG FFVII. You don't get the Tifa date and then Aerith is like "TOASTY!" popping out from the corner of the screen. But that's exactly what happens here.
I get why they did it. The baggage of OG FFVII meant they HAD to have a date mechanic and they expanded it to include more characters. Cool. Except the narrative they built specifically for Rebirth doesn't jive with it. Even if Cloud and Tifa turn out to be each other's one true love next game, you can't just jump the gun like that at the Gold Saucer.
I agree with everything you said, i just think that if the affinity system comes back it should be tied to other parts of the interaction system. You shouldnt be afraid of doing quests with either Tifa or Aerith if you want a specific date. It can ruin a lot of the narrative, even more in rebirth where caring about Aerith is very important. So by neglecting her a lot of her impact as a character is lost.

And this is that anon's point. Those character moments are too important to be so strongly tied to the date mechanic. If for whatever reason you're adamant about getting the Yuffie date you pretty much have no choice but to ignore Aerith and Tifa. Chapter Select makes it super easy to get the others but you'd think for a first playthrough they wouldn't have designed it so that there's an incentive to not talk to your party.

Unrelated but in an earlier thread I suggested using Ancient Greek math to measure the circumference of the planet with the shadows and, well...my results were not great. The maximum distance you can travel on a single continent is very small. The grasslands is only a little more than 2000m corner to corner. Then you're further limited by areas where you can get a good shadow on flat land. And even more, the "sun" in the game is uncooperative. I often measure no change in angle at all, indicating a flat planet, or if I do get a difference of a couple of degrees since it's over such a short distance you get a "planet" that's preposterously small. Like 200km in circumference.

I mean I really do like the remake, I enjoyed it more than some youtubers/internet say about it, and I don't mind how it handled so far.
At the same time I don't really trust Square ever since the 2000s that they spent most of their effort to please the West and imitate it.
I suppose square is big so there is probably different forces within the company doing their own thing ad businesses. It's hard what to support and trust a brand that I grew up with.
I have been an FF fan since I was a kid and the key is to simply have low expectation. Mechanics will change every iteration and that's okay, there will be some entries that are better than others and that's okay, 16 plays as DMC and to me, that's okay, because I mostly play FF for the story and experience, and not fully for the game mechanics. And the music never disappoints. Just make your own decision.

I feel like Tifa will have to get some kind of major moment because otherwise Sephiroth's taunting of Cloud over Tifa to try to split them up wouldn't have much of a purpose. He's clearly trying to prevent her from shaking Cloud free of his delusions. I guess he could succeed and Aerith would have to step in to fill the void but that would make the story so insanely lopsided that Tifa may as well not even be in the game at all.
The only revelations left from the original LS are that he's not a Soldier and his true role at Nibelheim. He learned everything else in Rebirth. Strictly speaking she's not even necessary for it anymore because the stuff that only she can reveal had already been addressed. Zack could very plausibly handle it from here (not that they'd ever write it that way but there's really no reason now they couldn't)

At the edge of creation, the only time they can meet. Otherwise he's back to his non larping Cloud. And beagleverse Zack is rotting dead in a grave. So if you think oh Zack can just jump here and there across the multiverse, then he'd wake up in a rotting body in a grave in beagleverse.
we don't really know the mechanics of the multiverse so it's possible they can still jump body and all, the materia Aerith gave Cloud was a different one, so there were two white materias in one universe so who's to say people can't work the same?
If you follow the dream date mechanic then they have to wake up in their counterpart body in the other world, so Zack will wake up in his grave.
I don't think that's how it works. Zack and Cloud met for the same reason Aerith was both dying and not dying at the same time. The universes were merging. By beating Sephiroth they interrupted the merger and the multiverse was thrown apart again. What the final merged universe looks like is up in the air but presumably there'd be just one of every person and each person's circumstances depends on which of the multiverses "win" in the final product.
Why is Zack alive in the main timeline but Aerith is dead? Shouldn't the worlds merge? Is there no penalty for the dead Tifas, Barrets, and Reds in the Zack timelines? Where's the timeline Cloud and party in alive Aerith timeline? Why did Sephiroth want to merge the worlds to kill Aerith but you see merging worlds as a way to revive Aerith? Will Biggs be revived as well?
The ONLY thing Cloud learned in Rebirth is that Zack was his fellow 1st Class Soldier friend and he drowned in Nibelheim. Nothing changed with his original narrative.
Did you even play the game? Cloud still believes he was a soldier first class and everything in the flashback happened. He just now believes zack was one of the soldiers.
She will have her moment. Sephiroth seem to be aware that Cloud's recovery in the future and the chances of his success all depend on how Tifa handles it. That's why he was so insistent in killing her sooner and when she fell on the reactor the planet took the chance to show her lost memories and strengthen her bond with Cloud.

Learn what? Cloud don't know shit. He's still as lost as in part 1 and getting more and more unhinged by the moment, even more so than in the original game. Jenova is still controlling him and in his mid Aerith is still alive.

The planet's motivations are really weird now. It made sense in Remake when it was all about maintaining the OG events but now it isn't clear what exactly its doing. First it seems to help Tifa by prematurely giving her the visions from Cloud's mind and then saving her life, but later on the white ghosts are harassing everyone.

I'm so obsessed with this game that I already got the platinum and now spend my free time watching other people play the game to try and feel like I'm experiencing the game for the first time through them.
And mind you, I didn't rush my playthrough, I spent my time and clocked over 300 hours by the end of it. Maxed out all the best materia, made all kind of weird builds and beat "Rulers of the Outer Worlds" like 50 times. Watched all kinds of videos on Tifa to maximize her stagger potential through different cancels that people have found out. I hope for Part 3 they keep making her more and more like a fighting game character but I think it's time to move on. There is nothing else for me to do in this game. I had the same issue when I played Persona 5. It was so hard to move on. I got Stellar Blade and still have not even touched it yet because all I can think about is FF7 Rebirth.
