Trails of Cold Steel's a complete mess and completely destroys everything the series built up towards. The first two Cold Steel games are the least offensive of the quadrilogy but they're mostly set-up games and if you're like me and hate high school settings and high schooler protagonists, it's pretty annoying. Cold Steel 3 and 4 is where the entire plot becomes a complete clusterfrick and goes off the rails and has some of the worst pay-off in the entire series, completely fricking up things that have been built up since the Sky trilogy Hajimari/Reverie is just Cold Steel 5: Encore
Apparently Kuro's better than Cold Steel but at this point I frankly don't care; This is a series that heavily relies on all the previous games before it and I can't see Trails ever recovering again since Cold Steel was such a major turning point in everything.

the games before Cold Steel 1 are outdated, if you are new to the series it's best to start there.
