Blue bubble mill is my favorite. It revolved around making it so I couldn't be damaged and just milling the enemy to death.

A TCG with no cost curve to balance stronger cards is a mistake in general.
Design-wise, YGO should have died less than 2 years after it started.

There is cost in YGO. Most of the time the cards themselves are the cost.

Man luckily I got immunized to so much of this shit a young age when the MTG deck I spent months lovingly putting together was suddenly rendered garbage when a new expansion came out.
      >But look! You can buy these shiny NEW cards and do it all over again!
Frick that, I threw all my cards in a shoebox and never touched the game again.

You either make them drafting/deckbuilding games OR solid single player games with (MTG Microprose)

? every card game video game is pay to win from the outset. the only way to avoid that is to be completely free like old flash games were in the 90s.

Formats. TCGs are the only game-type were "seasons" make sense. Adding restrictions on to your card use in order to create interesting interplay makes perfect sense but most TCG autists don't actually like card games, they like gacha and p2w progression.
All you need to do is support draft and have 'standard' be a periodic gimmick and you're evergreen.

    card game god here
sadly card games are in such a miserable state that MTG drafting is the only way to play a good one.
and yes I've played every single player deck building roguelike as well (StS's success cursed that genre)

i want to draft but its so expensive on mtga when ur shit at the game like i am 🙁

        Anonymous

It does take work to get good at it. Which means a lot more studying than playing (LR podcast, watching top players draft, using statistic sites).
I used to dislike MTGA but it's become a nice place to go draft infinitely for free, then use the resources that pile up to gamble for $2000 every other month.

yeah i went on like a month long binge watching a pro drafter's youtube/twitch every day and reading articles and shit which was fun for me but at some point i blew like 50 bucks in a weekend after a bad streak and havent touched it since. i dont really mind losing since thats part of the process but the cost was getting too much. its really fun though definitely way better than all my constructed experiences.

A couple of my friends have just gotten into Magic and boy is it a bad starting point. We're relegated to playing only Commander, one just uses precons and the other 'brews' from what I suspect is the frontpage of EDH-rec. Using my own mostly outdated genuine homebrew jank against them is suffering.

Theres plenty of budget friendly edh decks out there and you can also slot in your 10 favourite jank.

you know, as much as people complain that online guides and metagaming ruined video games, that shit ERADICATED the fun from card games almost entirely.

Its more the fault of progression being tied to wins

        Anonymous

He’s clearly referring to tabletop card games which were utterly ruined by the internet and have no progression to speak of. You’d just go to the local game store on Thursday night and play magic with strangers and make friends with most of them, always a few weirdos but now it’s exclusively women who suck at the game and omega tryhard netdeckers.

Yeah buddy, nothing like playing in a casual group and that one autist with his 40 something lands and ten minute searching and shuffling turn deck he got off a website.
