It's alright.
I could see myself picking it up and playing it and having fun at any time really.
Solid 1v1, ffa and team vs team.
Creeping and heroes are fun, the low amount of expansion compared to aoe2 and broodwar does feel a bit lacking tho.
When it comes to watching competitively, I don't really care too much, rts tournaments for me are broodwar and aoe2 mainly.
Watching a random game from someone on the ladder tho, then wc3 can be quite enjoyable, more so even than the others.
Like if I had every RTS installed right now, and I was gonna go and play multiplayer,, queueing up 1vs1 in one of the games, I'd pick wc3.
I'd go human.
although i heavily dislike the heroes system, it is, without a doubt, one of the best representatives of solid asymmetrical balance. fit for 1v1, fit for bigger games. you can get very creative with build and your micro will be rewarded.
also frick blademaster.
It was fun but I stopped playing it after blizzard started doing updates again and every patch broke the balance in some new spetacular way. The Keepercraft era was the nail in the coffin for me, Reforged just buried it further.
I still remember the day the office throw a Warcraft 3 gameday 3v3. The other team has two middling player and a bumbling newb while I have a female team-mate that treat the game like Sims3 while my other team-mate plays it like an RPG/heroes only.
All in all, everyone had their fun.
mid, its good for what it is but the balance between heroes is super fricked so basically everyone just spams blademaster orcs and demon hunter nelves. combat is also very slow for my taste, with some of the more powerful spells in the game being unable to kill grunts from even 3/4th health leading to everything not feeling that satisfying to use. i also just don't really like really intense focus on microing spells and abilities compared games with more macro focus.
I have shit micro and had a 78% wr with just my macro game in 1v1 (admittedly lower in teammatch, where it seems micro matters more). All those micro cheese weenies doing demon hunter mana burn/siren frost arrow just couldnt figure out a few towers/thought they were winning picking off my units 1 by 1 over 20 minutes until suddenly 90 copters rape everything in their base.
copters are genuinely bad against nelves though
Unless they try to go full chimaera or something?
archers dryads heroes and even talons will destroy them.
They would never see it coming, i went to extraordinary lengths to project i was just a typical alliance shitter who only ever had just enough units to fight back my enemy with tower back up, but not enough to actually win without the towers, and doing stupid things like relying on footmen 20 min in to lull them into a false sense of security. Id harass and and try to contest camps and such, but my main focus was getting expos up and fortified and finding somewhere difficult to scout to build my averies/workshops.
I either went into gryphons if they showed absolutely no interest in air units and went bears, or copters if they started throwing anything airborne at me. Most players would scout my base, see 3 barracks and a sanctum or something and assume i was going knights.
Not great. For 1v1, there's minimal variety in viable hero choices. There's little in the way of unit countering. And tier 3 units almost never come up.
it's an anti-snowballing measure, RTS is very much a snowballing genre in MP. You can't field a huge army AND have a huge bustling economy on top of it, I'm pretty certain they wanted to make a fundamentally different RTS from StarCraft and Warcraft 2
It forces players who prefer to econ boom and overwhelm with a sledgehammer hit to play risky mid games trying to restrain an enemy while keeping pop low, to amass the fortune you need to win decisively.
Aoe2 has to be the most overrated out of all the great, almost legendary games. Not that it wasnt fun, but it had remained stagnant and design wise, it still is to this day
There are 45 or so civs nowadays and the overwhelming majority of them have always had the same type of opening and macro
Say what you will about Aoe3 and even aoe4; they have some variance and better ways to interact/fight around the map
I would say it has more to do with the fact that there is little differentiation in a 1v1 match up and that many maps feel empty outside trees and resources. Other games have at least something interesting or two.
A general grievance is that map design has become too stale for many games especially the ones focused on esports
i would rather they made a few special maps that are a bit larger than just the same old stale reskin of arabia
Easily the best RTS for the FFA format due to creeping/hero leveling as a mechanic.
1v1 is still interesting but I prefer a more macro-focused game on both a player and spectator level.
it's legit a game made for custom maps, melee games are mediocre that quickly get boring and dont understand how gays like WTII can play them for more than a decade. I enjoyed the custom maps on multiplayer so much but noooo they had to ruin things with the "remaster" (had the old cd and cant play online anymore frick)

blizzard killed it
and the community itself revived it
How are you playing it? With the new launcher?
Thanks to custom maps you can actually play DotA instead of a shit RTS, so its pretty good.
cringe

so where did you hide the workshops? you cant mass copts without at least a second base and at least 2 workshops

the 2018+ onward rebalances have fixed a lot of this, especially with undead
now this is fricking horseshit, frick upkeep, what the frick were they thinking?
>what the frick were they thinking?
They were thinking about not making you pc burn because of 3d engine and big amount of units, its literally this/
>reddit spacing
>dumbass opinion
checks out

correct. It also gives more emphasis on hero units who are something that can scale regardless of your upkeep lvl
DO NOT LIKE UPKEEP
FRICK UPKEEP
FRICK TAXES
I think it's really lame, like most multiplayer rts games. Nothing comes close to AoE2
Still better than starcraft tho
>Nothing comes close to AoE2
AoE is inferior to AoM
Aoe2 has to be the most overrated out of all the great, almost legendary games. Not that it wasnt fun, but it had remained stagnant and design wise, it still is to this day

zoomzoom
AoE2 is rock paper micro at its best. Its a sheer excercise in frustration to lose because you fell one archer behind 20 minutes ago.

How do I even play the original nowadays? Is reforged still fricked? I don't have a physical copy.
Ladies, if your man conjures vines, summons walking trees and reflects melee damage, he's a keeper
Good but always imbalanced
ANYONE WANNA PLAY WC3CONNECT
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR DAYS NOW FOR SOMEONE TO HOST ANYTHING
I WILL PLAY YOUR ABSOLUTE SLOP IF I GET TO HOST A MAP TOO EVENTUALLY
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Just play Reforged for custom games, moron. Nobody hosts anything on the third-party networks.
>just buy the slop when there's an alternate solution
have a nice day
>buy Reforged
If you actually owned WC3 and TFT you'd be able to activate the cd key on your Blizzard account, and would be able to play custom games.

Wc3connect works, but the only people on are dotagays
>had the old cd and cant play online anymore
Why are you lying?
