Of course. That's probably one of my all time favourite games. I should play it more actually.

If you haven't already tried it, play Galaga '88 for the PC Engine. It's awesome.

Also, a non-/vr/ option I love to death: Eschatos.

      It's just a preference.

      Vertical is better than horizontal.

        Horis are the chads choice
Verts are for posers that hide replays and strategies

Just turn the screen on its side.

Humble guys with huge dicks play both

This is my question as well, there are some really fantastic horizontal shooters out there and some of them are easier to get into than their vertical counterparts. Plus you can play them in regular landscape orientation

The whole point of that one is to have fun, not a challenge (for the most part)

Why is it so challenging to have fun playing it then?

        Anonymous

Because you only like being challenged mentally.

Oh so you only want babby shmups with bright pulsating colors and tiny hitboxes so you don't actually have to route or learn anything, is that it?

Hostility out of the way, here are some recs:

Batsugun - the proto bullet hell, not very hard.

DoDonPachi - the bullet hell genre codifier. Doable if you grind it for a couple of months (and if you want more bullet hells just check out the rest of Cave's catalogue or literally any indie shmup made the last 15 years).

Batrider/Bakraid/Garegga/Dimahoo - semi bullet hells by Raizing, the kings of scoring systems.

Raiden Fighters (Jet) - short but intense, varied strats, good scoring.

Vasara 1/2 - sword swinging shmups.

Space Bomber - meme-tastic oldschool fun.

Akkanvader - Space Invaders but still fun.

In general, these are not games you "beat" unless you have grand autismo, or dedicate years of your life to the hobby (or a single game even). Many of these games have interesting scoring systems, and I recommend checking out score boards on shmupsforum and measure your climb to those instead of the pitiful in-game ones.

Star Parodier is super easy mode. Probably as entry level as it gets. After that there's Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire (kind of challenging but you can spam bombs), Detana Twinbee Deluxe Pack, and Galactic Attack aka Layer Section for Saturn. Aside from that there's the early Touhou games I guess. When you are finally ready to try some horizontal shooters, Cotton 100% and Super Air Zonk are pretty easy. You might also enjoy Harmful Park, Keio Flying Squadron, or Sengoku Blade.

i'd argue soldier blade is the easiest in the series

both are amazing games though and good entry points

    >a good entry point into the genre

Then any non-bullet hell will do the trick. Xevious, Tiger Heli, Space Invaders and it's clones. There's also a fave of mine, Gun Smoke, but the challenge escalates quickly.

Me too, anon. But I loved that arcade, anyway, and patieltly started all over again. Wolf Chief Shot Gun was as fas as I could get with 1 credit. That three-way shooting system alone already made it the most enjoyable shot'em'up of all times as far as my childhood goes.
