We've blown far beyond the DS even though it technically hasn't reached its numbers. Notice how even Sonybros aren't even mentioning the DS anymore. PS2 is all they have left while the rest of the real world has accepted the Switch will sell more.
If nintendo dropped the price to like 99 it could still continue to sell as a budget console while the switch 2 is getting it's feet out the door. But nintendo usually just likes to kill the previous console as soon as the successor comes so I doubt it will pass the ps2
I think that's a perfect way to end the generation. Infinite wieneriness only to fall short at the finish line would be characteristic of Nintendo and their fans.

So this is it, right? Even with the Switch 2 coming out this year, all it had to do was beat out the 139 mil count three years before the 10 year anniversary and so 159 mil was guaranteed for the next three years even without the price cut. It's been a good run Ps2.
It's inevitable at this point. With a price drop and new selects program they could easily reach 160m units before Switch 2 production catches up with the demand.
Depends, but assuming a late 2024 release and that the information about the initial order being 10 million units is correct, the next console could be in short supply well into 2026. Nintendo will have plenty of reasons to keep making the current Switch for a pretty long time, especially if they make a clear upgrade pipeline for new users through backwards compatibility.
You know you can Joke all You want but in Reality it's not the PS2 that the Nintendo Switch should be Celebrating about because in Actual Reality it's the PS5 that is Going to outsell BOTH the Switch AND the PS2 by the End of it.
PS5 is actually getting new and quality games like Dragons Dogma. Rise of the Ronin. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Tekken 8. Not to mention future titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, Kingdom Hearts 4 and Wolverine.

PS5 can't even bat in the general direction of the rates the Switch or the PS2 hit during their years at the same point the PS5 is at now, and this is with the Xbox being a complete non factor for the PS5. Switch is going to be king for at least a whole generation, PS6 will have to be the next challenger unless the Super Switch or the Switch 2 blasts past the total of the Switch's numbers by then.

What's confusing about it? it is a Nintendo handheld console and they always sell well. If you combine the sales of the Wii U and 3DS you get about 90 million units sold and that was Nintendo's worst generation. Since Nintendo stopped splitting their market between 2 systems and sold enough hardware to get 3rd party interest early on, these are not all that weird sales numbers at all. It also helps that Sony didn't release any competing handhelds.
The 3DS and Wii U markets have overlap, though. I own a 3DS and a Wii U, so that's two sales. I own one Switch, so that's one sale. The Switch is selling to additional people.

I do, I got hardware decent enough to emulate TotK at 1080p 30fps which is better than how the Switch runs the game, and my hardware is about 30% more expensive than a base Switch console. The only reason I want to get the Lite is because of the portability.

Because in reality the goal isn't "quality discussion" or any gay shit like that. This site functions under the same logic as kotaku where it doesn't matter if it's rage or hype, as long as you're clicking and engaging that's all that matters. The shit that people complain about the most are the things that get the most activity. That's why we have shit like console wars, twitter threads, and off topic AI Waifu OC posting.
It wasn't the Wii U and this was the time where brand recognition became law of the land. It doesn't help that the Switch was the first console for a lot of people and it especially shows with BotW.
Having the best year 1 line up since the PS2 probably helped build a lot of momentum early on. Even if you disregard a lot of the shovelware it had, new major entries for several of their IPs within a year of launch is shit most console launches can only dream of these days. Throw in the ports of Wii U games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Bayonetta 2 and that helps a little bit more, considering far fewer people had a Wii U.
That's why I think they should hold off until March 2025 for Switch 2 for software. They need to have the best motherfricking launch line up of quality games ready to go.

By the time 3rd parties realized the Switch wasn't DOA, it was too late since they plan shit years ahead of time. They'll be there day one on the Switch 2; they have no choice since nothing other than iterative yearly franchises and live service games make money on Xbox or PS5.
While they slipped and stumbled during gen 6 Capcom was at least smart and kept Nintendo close, they could have gone to the Xbox360 with MH tri & 4 if they cared about power after Sony fricked them with their handheld but they went to Nintendo even went out their way to port almost all their games that skipped Nintendo like Okami, RE5 & 6 and Dragons Dogma, now if they could release Lost Planet 2 on Switch.
Only BG3 and Palworld fans. Pizza Tower and Armored Core 6 are legitimately better games than anything else that have come out in years. It's a step up from cinematic experiences like Xenoblade and Zelda, IMO.

Nintendo's weaknesses in their library were big gaps between first party games, a lack of RPGs, a lack of shooters, a lack of notable 3rd party games. The Switch has all that plus adding in Pokemon. I respect how they fixed up those weaknesses. It could be frustrating to own a Nintendo console in the past. Because of the gaps between games, it made a first party game that you didn't like hurt even more.

I believe that is why the switch is so successful, the lineup of games is full of AA games with modest budgets, people love that shit. It's not that weird. 3DS still sold 9 million more after the Switch came out. Assuming Pokemon is late to making the jump again to the next platform that could be the last big nudge the Switch gets.
There's either a tactical price drop or Nintendo is expecting to launch Switch 2 at a premium price($350-399) that they think might make some people averse to an early purchase, and can offer the more reasonable Switch with its enormous library as an entry point while Nintendo gets Switch 2 big hitter exclusives, e.g. a new 3D Mario, Mario Kart 9, Animal Crossing, at this point probably Metroid Prime 4, out the door.
A lot of things could keep the Switch rolling along.

We've blown far beyond the DS even though it technically hasn't reached its numbers. Notice how even Sonybros aren't even mentioning the DS anymore. PS2 is all they have left while the rest of the real world has accepted the Switch will sell more.
It did pretty well for something that can't play DVDs, though.
If nintendo dropped the price to like 99 it could still continue to sell as a budget console while the switch 2 is getting it's feet out the door. But nintendo usually just likes to kill the previous console as soon as the successor comes so I doubt it will pass the ps2

So this is it, right? Even with the Switch 2 coming out this year, all it had to do was beat out the 139 mil count three years before the 10 year anniversary and so 159 mil was guaranteed for the next three years even without the price cut. It's been a good run Ps2.
It's inevitable at this point. With a price drop and new selects program they could easily reach 160m units before Switch 2 production catches up with the demand.

Depends, but assuming a late 2024 release and that the information about the initial order being 10 million units is correct, the next console could be in short supply well into 2026. Nintendo will have plenty of reasons to keep making the current Switch for a pretty long time, especially if they make a clear upgrade pipeline for new users through backwards compatibility.

What's confusing about it? it is a Nintendo handheld console and they always sell well. If you combine the sales of the Wii U and 3DS you get about 90 million units sold and that was Nintendo's worst generation. Since Nintendo stopped splitting their market between 2 systems and sold enough hardware to get 3rd party interest early on, these are not all that weird sales numbers at all. It also helps that Sony didn't release any competing handhelds.
The 3DS and Wii U markets have overlap, though. I own a 3DS and a Wii U, so that's two sales. I own one Switch, so that's one sale. The Switch is selling to additional people.

I do, I got hardware decent enough to emulate TotK at 1080p 30fps which is better than how the Switch runs the game, and my hardware is about 30% more expensive than a base Switch console. The only reason I want to get the Lite is because of the portability.

Having the best year 1 line up since the PS2 probably helped build a lot of momentum early on. Even if you disregard a lot of the shovelware it had, new major entries for several of their IPs within a year of launch is shit most console launches can only dream of these days. Throw in the ports of Wii U games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Bayonetta 2 and that helps a little bit more, considering far fewer people had a Wii U.
Also handheld play is comfy and convenient.
That's why I think they should hold off until March 2025 for Switch 2 for software. They need to have the best motherfricking launch line up of quality games ready to go.

What. I was able to emulate their games just fine on my dogshit computer at work. If you're playing Xbox and PS games on your PC your PC is more than capable of emulating switch games far better than how they run on the switch. Even the deck can emulate switch games and it's piss easy to set up.

It's not that weird. 3DS still sold 9 million more after the Switch came out. Assuming Pokemon is late to making the jump again to the next platform that could be the last big nudge the Switch gets.
There's either a tactical price drop or Nintendo is expecting to launch Switch 2 at a premium price($350-399) that they think might make some people averse to an early purchase, and can offer the more reasonable Switch with its enormous library as an entry point while Nintendo gets Switch 2 big hitter exclusives, e.g. a new 3D Mario, Mario Kart 9, Animal Crossing, at this point probably Metroid Prime 4, out the door.
A lot of things could keep the Switch rolling along.
