can someone please remind me why this game was hyped beyond belief for seemingly no reason?

people liked the witcher 3
even this doesn't explain it. the fanbase treated cyberpunk like the second coming of christ
what did they lie about
Cyberpunk as a theme isn't a hugely explored genre despite having a lot of potential, and 2077 was the first big name in that genre in a long time.
People were also still high off Witcher 3 hype and thought that this was going to be Witcher GTA.
They made it seem like you could roleplay as anyone. A CEO, a journalist, a cop, a drug dealer etc, with a big amount of ways to solve each quest
Pretty much fucking everything. Could probably find a list online
Literally everything, it was supposed to be an rpg with multiple paths and important choices set in a huge interactive city. Instead it’s a linear cinematic shooter and the city is just an empty setpiece.
So what is the ACTUAL definitive cyberpunk experience as of right now?
Baldr Sky
why not The Ascent
Cool.
the witcher 3 was incredible though, tons of small touches, tons of care, sincere, grand scale, and you could see progress with each witcher made
it became apparent thought that 2077 wasnt gonna be shit though once it completely dominated youtube and no real gameplay was being shown, only soundbytes of what this group was like and that group was like
>what did they lie about
go watch the trailers
>what did they lie about
there was a pretty good list floating around shortly after release, but I can't be assed to find it
People are just salty they couldn't play as a fucking journalist. Imagine wanting to larp as a garden gnome.
I like the idea of trying to do good in an evil profession.
Better part of a decade of lies and promises from a formerly trusted studio
lies
The marketing dept was flush with cash after Witcher 3.
People saw it as a "game of the future" and the initial advertisement (years and years before any gameplay footage was shown) promised things that realistically could've never been pulled off to the degree everyone wanted. Everyone had some vague idea of a 12/10 amazing Cyberpunk game that basically functioned like inserting yourself into the Matrix, not playing a videogame.
The game itself being disappointing didn't help.
this
from 2013
people hyped themselves up into expecting a game with three completely separate paths, a game in which you could be everything from netrunner to cop to thief to whatever and there would essentially be a whole separate game waiting for you in any path where you could do anything and be anything and it would be like real life in a videogame
in retrospect of course everyone was being delusional, but it helped fuel the anger
I had never seen this trailer
funny thing the actual game didn't have a girl with a tit bigger than a lemon
dont think its fair to say people were delusional initially, the game devs were saying all these things were possible and doable
the issue was it was all from a roleplaying perspective
there isnt a need to have an in depth dossier on the trauma team for instance if you only run into them here or there, but there was so much info on them, when really its a huge nothingburger
Good marketing. Ambitious project by a trusted studio. It lacks the story and personality that the Witcher had, but it's a much more interesting open world than the Witcher.
because it was really pretty and we didnt have a whole lot of good cyberpunk games, just weird ones (EYE) and shit ones (Syndicate)
Because of Witcher 3 and because in the beginning the game was advertised as New Vegas in Cyberpunk
it wasnt hyped
My main complaint about the game is generally the tone and atmosphere. I expected something like Blade Runner Deus Ex. Instead it was futuristic GTA.
>Future stories should look backwards and cater to my own old-fashioned tastes.
And GTA is the taste of the future then?
That's definitely the direction they should have gone in, considering Witcher 3 was only good for its story.
CP 2077 answered the question 'why do companies spend so much on marketing and so little on game development?'
I'll never wonder why marketing budgets are so absurdly huge again
they sold the game as a full recreation of the table top game instead of another FPS game.
CDPR had a good reputation.
Only reason to play it is because it's a technical marvel. Best looking console game, maybe tied with the Last of Us remake
The art.
>San Francisco 2025
Marketing, hype, and Keanu Reeves
CDPR had a really good marketing team only rivaled by Rockstar
studio's previous game was GOTY and didn't have a bad game yet
the previous cyberpunk game to compare to was 2016 dude sex
game was based off an existing IP that was generally well liked by fans of the genre
good marketing campaign that hit all the right buttons
people have nostalgia glasses on, these same people were playing gta3 not that long ago
Marketing, Witcher 3 being both a good game and gay “influencers” praising it all the more.
Also lies on top of more lies
>almost a decade in the making
The marketing was that long, the game in dev was waaaaaay shorter
>multiplayer
Scrapped
>story promises/length
Over promised, under delivered by a substantial margin, Judy originally being a romance option for both genders for example
>mechanics and gameplay
Some shit was never made, some shit was scrapped, some shit was taken out because it made the game too easy or was deemed unnecessary.
To be honest the witcher 3 isn't that great. The movements are the same no matter what weapon you use
The only real enjoyment I got out of this game were the side missions where you go after the cyberpsychos. Nearly every mission in the game was just following an NPC around as they slowly walk from one point to another. It really was mindnumbing at points.
Cyberpsycho missions were great especially with the bits of stories that you get. NCPD missions too but it gets boring after a while.
I thought you'd get something really cool at the end of that questline.
>you get a few thousand credits
>a later update adds a jacket
wtf
Hype is a self fuelling machine. Once you get something to a critical point, normies will continue hyping it.
they got a lot of money and the prevailing corporate sentiment is that if you advertise the shit out of something then it can't fail (that's how American elections work)
People just wanted a new GTA kinda game and they thought a reputable company like CDPR could deliver that kind of experience. Little did they know, designing an open world city is a different ballgame than a medieval one.
CDPR were a well respected company and cyberpunk is one of the most kino genres ever made
>one of the most kino genres ever made
Not even close
gays
>kino
Tourist spotted.
well, them being respected in the past tense is certainly accurate
Why were people so surprised that Cyberpunk was basically just future Witcher 3? Surface level RPG elements with a focus primarily on story.
It was way worse than Witcher 3.
how so
>none of the quest complexity
>combat is even worse and with 0 balance
>equipment even more thoughtless
>no hot women, game is full of goblinas
>enemies are way more boring
>soundtrack is way worse
>soundtrack even worse
this, breh tell me a single memorable ost from cyberpunk. how could they fuck this one so much? was this ost generated by ai?
PON PON SHIT is memorable, but only because of the meme value
>single memorable ost from cyberpunk
No Save Point by Run the garden gnomeels was pretty good, and PON PON SNEED was memorable at least.
Anyways it was a 7/10 game for me.
>quest complexity
witcher 3 quests weren't complex, there are like a handful at all that even have different endings and these endings only have 1 flag each
>combat is even worse
combat is just as shallow in witcher 3
>equipment even more thoughtless
I don't see how they can be less thoughtless than Witcher 3 other than picking a random set you want to use for the rest of the game
>no hot women
wrong
>enemies are way more boring
than the 90% of human enemies? I can't even think of a memorable regular mob other than the spirits you have to fight in a circle
Stop coping.
There is literally no quest in Cyberpunk at the level of the Baron quest. There are no big monsters like in Witcher 3 that offer some variety except very few missions where you get mechs. The women are fucking ugly and you can break the entire game by just putting crit chance and crit damage bonuses on your clothes.
This is all superficial shit. Witcher 3 didn't have good game design either. Bad level design, boring mechanics, same-y encounters, no sense of gameplay progression.
It's not superficial and I never said Witcher 3 was perfect, I just said it's way better than cyberpunk which is 100% true.
But fundamentally, the gameplay is what makes the game. If Cyberpunk had the same writing, enemy variety, and non-fappable women but the executed the systemic philosophy of Deus Ex everyone would say it was fantastic and even overlook some of the bugs. The biggest problems with Cyberpunk are problems that existed with TW3.
>the gameplay is what makes the game
Ok and Witcher 3 gameplay is still way better than Cyberpunk's.
>If Cyberpunk had
"if". It doesn't.
Cyberpunk's story is shit, the dialogue is bad and the characters are mostly forgettable.
It's a dystopian society where everything is commercialized, yet all strippers wear bras, all women are titlets and nobody in this universe tries to actually make themselves prettier.
>The biggest problems with Cyberpunk are problems that existed with TW3.
No, that's completely false. Witcher 3 had plenty of boring misc quests, but it also had a few really good ones. The expansions were also great.
Meanwhile CB has literally no high point. The only quest people even talk about are the mayor getting infected with the AI, but not even that quest goes anywhere.
The expansion is still not out but I highly doubt it's gonna be any good either.
Okay fine. If you just want good stories, maybe TW3 is that much better than Cyberpunk. Personally, I didn't play either long enough to know because the gameplay was mediocre and fundamentally I think cinematic narrative delivered through cutscenes is a waste of the medium.
>It's a dystopian society where everything is commercialized, yet all strippers wear bras, all women are titlets and nobody in this universe tries to actually make themselves prettier.
Bro, you gotta quit with this. If you are honestly basing your game purchasing decisions on how hot the women are, you gotta rub one out before shopping for games because that is some horny cringe shit. Keep your porn and non-porn media separate.
No, what I'm saying is that it's an ugly game full of ugly people.
I'm sure that makes you happy since it reminds you of real life, but I don't enjoy it personally.
Same reason No Man's Sky got hyped, devs wouldn't stop lying, underdelivered, what they did deliver was garbage.
The PC RPG audience are the easiest fucking pushovers to win over. They don't even understand what game design is. They just want lots of stats to make them feel smart, dark n' gritty shit to make them feel cultured, and top end graphics to justify their $2000 rigs. Theses are the gamers that will look you dead in the eye and tell you V:TMB is a masterpiece. They will play the eurojankiest shit if it appeals to their edgy noir fantasies. Oh, and tell them how hardcore your game is and how much it respects real gamers not casual normies. They'll defend your shit ass game to the death if you activate their nerd inferiority complex. That's why they were so easily duped by the marketing.
Fucking no one noticed that TW3 didn't have any systemic elements or that its mechanics were shit. You know how cops spawn behind you in Cyberpunk? Yeah, that's exactly how every non-scripted encounter worked in TW3. You know how the AI is braindead, the loot is mountains of underleveled junk, open world content is static, vehicle movement feels bad, the UIs feel clunky, most upgrades are small percentage changes, and the open world overall is just uninteractive set dressing? Yeah, all of that was in TW3.
Ironically it was normies who play GTA, Watchdogs, and Fallout 4 who had to point out that this shit was missing.
>and top end graphics to justify their $2000 rigs
>Theses are the gamers that will look you dead in the eye and tell you V:TMB is a masterpiece
I don't think you need a $2000 rig to play V:TMB
At the time they were really pushing for the best graphics possible. They fucked up their development by licensing Source from Valve before it was even officially released because they wanted fancy facial rendering. You see this pattern repeated with every cult RPG studio who gets a budget like Piranha Bytes, Warhorse, CDPR, and now Larian. They make graphics a chief priority despite the rest of the project screaming that resources are needed elsewhere.
VTMB still has some of the best face animations I've ever seen
You're right except its not unique to PC players. The target audience for gaming is just this stupid.
B-b-but the story is so goood. No, it's fucking not. You're being sold a cringe power fantasy wish fulfillment game where you can pretend to be the heckin witcherino dude. Sprinkle in some shameless imitations of better stories and there you go.
lies upon lies with the marketing.
Its the most immersive single player storyline in a video game ruined by the worst borderlands imitation ever attempted taking place in a half assed open world
Same fucking shit in TW3.
It was sold aa a super immersive roleplaying game that let you do anything you want. It ended up just like all the other AAA western open world games with Ubisoft influence.
i'm convinced everyone here is a nerd or something, i was smoking and drinking and listening to my music the entire game, modded the game to have better driving physics, free vending machines
Featuring the PEAK of Advanced Phallic Technology!
Highest reviewed game of all game you fucking retard tortanic poster.
Literally one of the best games ever made.
fact check: true
why though?
Marketing + dumb children who never experienced a marketing campaign before and actually believed it.
t. learned from the days of Peter Molyneux to never trust vidya marketing
It was supposed to be Witcher 3 meets GTA. It's still buggy as fuck and unplayable on PS4 btw.
I played on release on PC and it ran fine. Still glitches here and there but no worse than Skyrim and everybody loved that game.
I played Skyrim for the first time like 8 years after release with the PS4 remake. it was perfect.
I had two major quests bug out on me, requiring me to reload the game from an earlier save to fix them. I frequently saw people fall through the floor, or float in to the sky, or get stuck inside objects. Bodies sometimes ragdolled around the map for no reason, even dragon bodies.
I had one glitch on the Alduin's Bane main story mission where the dragon wouldn't spawn, but I just went to an earlier save and it worked.
Skyrim mogs the absolute shit out of Basedberjunk and is 1000x more immersive despite having cities with 10 buildings.
Not really, both games were about equally buggy, and I'd say CP2077 was slightly less buggy when it came to the main storyline. I only encountered one bug and it was easily fixed by leaving the area and returning to it, I never encountered anything game breaking or requiring going back to an old save file.
bro who gives a fuck about bugs, bugs were never the issue with Sõyberjunk, the problem is it’s generic Ubisoft looter shooter garbage now an immersive RPG
*not an immersive RPG
It was never going to be an immersive sim. This is CDPR. They do nothing but cinematic adventure games. It's all they've done. That's all Cyberpunk was ever going to be.
They shouldn’t have promised us that it was something that it wasn’t then
Anyone who still trusted CDPR after the TW3 gaslighting debacle is a fool.
Right, that graphics downgrade was staggering. Does the next gen update even reach the same visuals as the Witcher 3 e3 trailer?
Maybe you shouldn't be a gullible 10 year old who believes advertisements as face value? Like was this your first ever gaming disappointment? I guess everybody has to start sometimes, but for me it was in the mid 00s.
Way too much ambition from the developers, which lead to some of the highest expectations for a video game ever.
COMING WHEN ITS READY
Yeah, this is the exact shit I described in
On Ganker people fell for the tortanic meme and convinced themselves everybody pointing out the red flags just wanted a big game to fail, closed themselves off from reality out of spite that way.
Also the reveal trailer was really good
the tortanic people were right though, save for the sales numbers
That's what I mean by falling for the tortanic meme
Tortanic posting doesn't exist,it's just people calling out that something looks like shit and when it comes out and is shit everybody that said people were tortanic posting just erase from their memories that the tortanic posters were right and go on to do it for the next game
Or perhaps more to the point they just pretend they never cried tortanic.
CDPR was a well trusted developer, they had good marketing and cyberpunk is one of the best genres
Lots of marketing, the setting looked neat, people already liked the Witcher and Keanu Reeves.
I wonder how many people loved edgerunners and bought the game because they thought it'd be like that, then got disappointed by the trash heap the game actually is.
Well Edgerunners was the pretty obvious reason for the sudden resurgence in interest for 2077, but the reception afterward was infinitely more positive than it was on launch.
Just took two solid years of bug fixes and some cute anime girls.
At least 30,000 people played this game cause of that show.
Evidently not many, considering Cyberpunk 2077 is still in the top 100 most played games on Steam, and was in the top 20 for a solid month after the show came out. It's average user rating also improved to "mostly positive".
Va 11 ha 1 A cyberpunk bartender action too
>hyped beyond belief for seemingly no reason
you must be over 18 years old to post here
imagine all the strong points from witcher 3 made into cyberpunk like GTA but cyberpunk but the end product you get is fallout 4 cyberpunk
cyberpunk 2077 and witcher 3 are shit games. hot women in those games helped the game a lot.
or in other words, goyslop games.
not no reason. an open world game in this setting being developed at the level it was should have been a masterpiece. it’s a game that should have been made a thousand times over by now but was never realized
