Can we all agree that Demon's Souls is better than Dark Souls?
Demon's Souls has a much greater internal consistency. Look at Boletaria Castle for example - tables are overturned to be used as makeshift barricades, suggesting there was no time to lose. There are clear dining areas for the soldiers. World 2 has a very Moria-esque quality to it in that you start off in a mine and descend into the mouth of madness and magma - the Firelurker is surely a Balrog reference. You can run essentially go from X-1 through X-4 and the connectivity makes perfect sense
Demon's is still my favorite Souls game. Best atmosphere by a mile.
as someone who played ds1 first boletaria is unmatched. i remember wanting to play des so badly but I didn't have a ps3, eventually I got one and I was not disappointed one bit with des.
Dark Souls is the objectively better game, but Demon's Souls is subjectively better.
dark souls really isn't that good
I like both but prefer DS1.
Also Undead Burg also has dining rooms.
I genuinely don't understand how people can consider Dark Souls better than Demon's.
I can solve that mystery for you.
Interconnected world design/branching paths
Secret worlds
Sens fortress
Estus healing system
No, we can't all agree on that. What are you, fricking stupid?
Does DeS emulate well? I actually own this on the PS3 but playing on console gives me a headache so I never finished it
Yes, very. RPCS3 with the 60FPS patch is all you need, although there's a mod that changes the material shader slightly (for the better).
> there's a mod that changes the material shader slightly (for the better).
Do you happen to have a link to this? Appreciate the info, 60fps patch sounds fantastic
https://www.nexusmods.com/demonssouls/mods/70
This is the part where someone replies to this post with "soulless"
I like the shiny reflections of the original. It gives a more eerie atmosphere to the game.
It was the first ps3 game to emulate well. Any modern pc can run it at 60fps.
I'm willing to call it as good but I wouldn't call it better for the simple reason that the world in dark souls was such a massive improvement
I like both but Demon's Souls just hits different. It was the last Souls game I played (right after I finished ER) and yet it impressed me the most. Everything in it just fits together so well.
It’s a very inspired game, that’s for sure. I bought DeS after Prepare to Die Edition restored my faith in vidya as a whole and was pleasantly surprised by how fresh it was despite it basically looking and playing like a DaS prototype. I guess that “atmosphere” that anons are always talking about really is something special.
>Want to play Demon's Souls
>Remember THAT part
>including
>That garbage upgrade system
>That garbage PVP
>That garbage level design
>That garbage weapon balance
>That garbage armor system
>That garbage boss roster
>That garbage item burden
>That garbage world tendency
>That garbage game in general
>too OCD and autistic to enjoy a masterpiece
sad
>That garbage PVP
the pvp is good
it's you who is bad at it
LMAO
I suggest trying some 2D fighting games before to get you more used to solo pvp games
little scrub cúck
You spam your shit videos and hot takes in every Fromsoft thread. You're not funny and you're not interesting. You're just a sad twat who wants to ruin people's discussion about the games.
>garbage level design
? most levels are great, including some that are super linear. interconnectivity isn't the end all of level design ffs.
Demon's Souls is the reason DS3 sucks
Damn this game is pretty good I'm reall- oh it's over.
You don't understand, you have to go into NG+ if you want to properly play a build through the entire game
That's fricking stupid
It's a wonderful game but I still like DS1 better
Boletaria Castle looks nice I guess but the fact that it's technically both the first and the final area it just looks boring. The way to the final fight is so bland and unmemorable.
World Tendency kinda sucks.
Item burden isn't fun.
Not much memorable characters from it.
But it's still a really good game and it has a better blighttown than blighttown.
>and it has a better blighttown than blighttown.
No it doesn't.
Blighttown has kino vertical traversal and is connected through multiple areas that ends with Quelaag
World 5 is boring ultra linear garbage like the rest of Demon's Shart with shitty meme boss at the end
>Blighttown has kino vertical traversal
has the shittiest most inconsistent sections of platforming in the series with structures that look walkable making you slide right off
>and is connected through multiple areas
WOW you can enter the area from the back and skip 95% of it, amazing
the swamp is also a fricking joke compared to 5-2
>WOW you can enter the area from the back and skip 95% of it, amazing
This but unironically... man dark souls ruled. Rules.
filtered snoyshitter
2023 and people now pretend blighttown was good lol. The only good part about it was the general theme and aesthetic. Especially on the original console release it sucked absolute fricking dick because of what wrote and also because the torches would fricking bring you down to 8 fps.
For the longest time the meme was
>remember how good dark souls is
>want to replay it
>remember blighttown
>nevermind
and it was that for good reason
Blighttown is genuinely much better on replays than the first time. It goes from a horrific slog into a complete unknown to an almost tranquil place because of how isolated you end up being.
I genuinely admire the balls it would take design wise to commit to have such a drawn out and horrible potential experience in wait for players, and also let the entire thing be flat out skipped and even accessed directly from close to the start of the game.
this, on subsequent playthroughs blightown always striked me as one of the highlights of das
>the torches would fricking bring you down to 8 fps
I always thought it had something to do with the water and its reflections or something like that
>WOW you can enter the area from the back and skip 95% of it, amazing
This but unironically. The interconnected map really made DS1''s world feel special
>trip over two (2) stacked 2x4 planks
>blame game
embarrassing
Miyazaki considers DeS and DaS to be prototypes for BB, Sekrio and ER
>smash thirty different biomes together within the same square kilometer
>the connectivity makes it good instead of a disjointed mess
The painted world didn't even need to be a teleport. A big door in that exact spot would have been exactly as congruous as the rest of the game
No, it really just felt like undercooked Dark Souls. You can see a lot of ideas from the later games in an early fetal state. Charming, but certainly not better. I liked them both though.
I can 10-0 you in both games
If you're not the kind of person that breaks down in tears looking at Anor Londo they both play like shit now.
I like how no one ever gives any real reasons why DeS is somehow the best. Like wow if you enjoy running around an empty level, looking at "atmosphere", and listening to the nexus music IT'S THE BEST ONE!
I wouldn’t say it’s the best but it definitely has the thickest atmosphere of the franchise so far. 3-1 is still unmatched.
Just bullshit
World Tendency is a kino mechanic and it's a shame later games dropped it
I didn't play DeS yet, whats world tendency? I hear it mentioned a lot but I can't make sense of what the frick it's supposed to do
Prepare yourself.
Worlds/archstones are the "levels" in DeS. DeS is 5 levels connected by a hub you warp out of. All worlds start at 0 or neutral world tendency. Dying while human gives you -1 point. This continues to a max of -7 or "pure black" world tendency. If you kill a boss that moves the counter +2 (i think? Can't recall) towards a max of +7 being pure white world tendency.
Various events are tied to -7 through +7 world tendency. Killing npcs gives you negative world tendency points. Killing certain enemies that only spawn in the negatives give you back positive points etc. It's a fricking clusterfrick of a system and completely inscrutable casually. Also effects how much health you have in soul form and how much damage enemies do Iirc.
But it gets worse. Because if you are online the world tendency is updated to match some global average pulled out of the aether. Destroying any level of control over the process. You were supposed to have some control through pvp contributing to changing it by killing invaders but the averaging erasing your state with each log in sucked.
Basically the only way to use this system is a dumb method.
Play offline.
have a nice day in the nexus to be in soul form
Kill boss moving counter from 0 to +2
have a nice day in the nexus to be in soul form
Kill boss moving counter to +4
...
Repeat to +7 pure white and collect reward
Become human
Kill self in world
Become human
Kill self in world
Repeat 14! Times to reach -7 pure black (actually more than 14 because primordial demons give like +4 or something)
Collect rewards
So the optimal play to get every collectable requires killing yourself a minimum of like 80 times mindlessly jumping off cliffs and falling from high heights.
Did I mention there is no real clear descriptor of your world state and you just have to look at an image and guess what color it is? Fantastic system.
Yeah that seems kinda moronic in an annoying way
I wouldn't bother micromanaging WT. Just play online to get the server tendency and enjoy the randomness.
>So the optimal play to get every collectable
Seems fair that you have to do something extremely tedious to achieve something this moronic. Thankfully nobody sane plays this way.
why is it a kino mechanic?
They probably could've polished it into something fair and interesting but as usual it's just easier to drop a feature. Just like covenants later.
world tendency is garbage
>Bro stuff happens randomly lol
what kind of brain damage you gotta have to praise world tendency
Imagine having all the typical jank of Dark Souls 1/2 questline triggers with added random multiplayer modifiers the player has no control over and are pretty much irreversable
"Shit on my plate, that will make it unique high cuisine" said the DeSgay to the Chef
*irreversible
>Imagine having all the typical jank of Dark Souls 1/2 questline triggers with added random multiplayer modifiers the player has no control
kino, Dark Tourists will never understand
>Imagine having all the typical jank of Dark Souls 1/2 questline triggers with added random multiplayer modifiers the player has no control over and are pretty much irreversable
That's how it's supposed to be. Souls content is meant to be missed and if you don't understand that then you don't understand Souls.
Oh look the tryhards are here.
>no estus
>no interconnected world
No.
>>no estus
>>no interconnected world
just like the other best fromsoftware game, Bloodborne
DeS has shit weapons, shit bosses, shit world design, 0 challenge. DS is better at literally everything and DeS makes DS2 look like peak Sekiro and BB.
It's worth noting that Demon Souls was built from the corpse of a first person Oblivion clone. Man, what a timeline we're in to have avoided that.
considering their previous games it's more surprising they swapped to third person
Good point, but Miyazaki is the reason for that considering his previous game was AC4.
That's kinda funny to think about in the context of AC6. Miyazaki made their action RPGs do third person because of his AC habits, and now that AC6 out the most common complaint was that it's set up too much like their action RPGs
full circle moment
Demon's Souls is a lot more refined than Dark but it came at a big cost. The combat loop was just a part of what Demon's Souls so memorable, but it became something Dark and its sequels doubled down on. Something precious was lost in between
All you do in Demons SOuls is combat
A lot of it is contextualised in far more different ways and more consistently so. And many of the bosses are not just straight-up fights, like Leechmonger or Fool's Idol
>Can we all agree
hivemind here, yes we can all agree
WHY? Because you posted you in the nexus? Again, doesn't fricking mean anything. DeS hipsters everyone
imagine being this autistic, guy was just cracking a joke
maybe if you didn't start the franchise with dark souls because you are poor you would understand why its better than dark souls
Wow again, doesn't mean anything.
>WHY? Because you posted you in the nexus? Again, doesn't fricking mean anything. DeS hipsters everyone
DIdn't you know that Demons's' Souls is actually a pseudo point and click puzzle adventure game where you out think the enemies to overcome the deadly traps just like an adventurerer would? I hear the game doesn't even have combat. Here I use my cunning to cast soul arrow because that's what i would do if i was actually there like an adventurer. Then you play DS#3 and it's just a game about hitting the roll button at the right time.
Moment when you reach anor londo>tower of latria>sens fortress>boletaria>undeadburg>everything else>valley of defilement=demon ruins>ds2, ds3, elden ring
I think I would agree just because the enviroments and NPCs are better in Demon's Souls
There is not one bad level in DeS
The gameplay is better in basically every game after.
NOOOO you cant just mention GAMEPLAY in a video GAME
dark souls 1 plays worst of them all
Just in DS1 and only slightly because of poise
Except DS1.
I've been meaning to play this game, should I emulate the original or play the remake?
Emulate the original, it's runs pretty well these days.
DeS runs circles around DkS.
des is good but kings field and shadow tower shouldn't have died for it, frick miyazaki you fricking hack.
King's Field was already at its end long before Miyazaki showed up. It ended with KF3 with KF4 being a sendoff for the series.
Your post is just some moronic mental gymnastics. Dark Souls obviously has more consistency considering it has a believable interconnected world.
>"can we all agree"
You're not on reddit Black person, I piss in your mouth
Demon's Souls was somewhat scary but I never felt a sense of horror from any Dark Souls game. Dark Souls just has more of a cartoony or video gamey vibe. I played Demon's after playing DS3 so it's not nostalgia
Demon's feels like a proof of concept. Like a test to see what works and what doesn't before polishing the formula in Dark Souls.
Demon’s Souls is phenomenal. Comfiest soul game of all. The lore isn’t too crazy. It doesn’t waste your time with padding. Never gets repetitive. Small levels but amazing design. Every single level is special
It’s just great. Demon’s souls is a fantastic game.
It was a genuine game, given to players before bamco israelitery reared its head
so how do we feel about the remake?
I'm aware they blackwashed the crestfallen knight and all the knights in the intro have their helmets up (revealing that they are either women or black) but getting past the usual shit that gets the flak, did they change anything big gameplay wise or redesign portions of a map? most i know is that they completely forgot what moody lighting is and just made everything everywhere bright enough to see everything.
No, but it's still great.
