I genuinely don’t know if I want to invest any time into this. Seems like it’s basically Nioh Fantasy. Is that a good thing or what?

I don't think it actually plays like Nioh despite being the engine. More straightforward button mashing action RPG. I think it is good.

3/10 but if they let me make my own character instead of playing as their MGR wannabe "ironic" shit character it would be a 10/10.

I know you are, you seem exactly the type of person who watches influencers on YouTube all day long and absorbs their opinions. That's not even the funniest part of the game but of course you have to repeat the meme. Frick you.

                Anonymous

It's a meme because it's ridiculous but in an endearing way. It has nothing to do with "influencers." The only version of the game that I've played was the SNES fan translated ROM 20 years ago. You know it's ridiculous, too, and you're being contrarian by pretending it isn't.

It's dumb and silly. It's only a good plot twist if you're 9 years old which you probably are. That's what I like about the game, though, along with the job system so I don't see why so many of you autists ITT are chimping out at me.

So you only played it for it's deep story or are you just here to argue with me because you want attention? I thought the game suffered from a poor fan translation but judging from the pixel remaster it wasn't. Butz > Bartz though.

As a MMO, FF14 is bad. You can't do anything with your friends because everything is locked behind a 400 hour long singleplayer story, half of which is cutscenes of people standing around and talking. The other half is walking to the next npc to talk to, bursting down quest mobs within seconds, or doing a solo duty. Very rarely you will do a dungeon and have an opportunity to play with your friends. Once you have finally slogged through the story and made it to endgame, there is scarcely little to do. You do an Alliance raid once for the spectacle and that's that. There is no progressing through it like in WoW. For the 8 man raids and trials, there are only 4 raid bosses and maybe 1 or 2 trial bosses that are current (compare that to WoW where each raid tier brings at least a dozen fights). That's the extent of raid content. What's left? The joke of the PvP system? Grinding on hours in Bozja or Eureka for sparkly JPEG weapons?

It is also a subscription MMO with awful business practices. Bank slots locked behind heightened subscription fees. Raid boss mounts locked behind the cash shop. Hrothgar have to pay money to change their hairstyle. Cash shop items are per character, not account wide, so frick you if you want to have alts (which have to go through the entire 400 hour long story all over again...). Despite being responsible for keeping Square Enix afloat and the game being marketed as a AAA production, the vast majority of the game's cutscenes and dialogue are unvoiced, while ESO, GW2, and WoW, and other JRPGs have been fully voiced for years. Not to mention the awful housing system that is laughable compared to the competition, among numerous other issues.

As a singleplayer JRPG, FFXIV is a mixed bag. Moving crates, playing messengers, and other tedious chores isn't an exciting high fantasy adventure that Final Fantasy players want. The main cast are insufferably bland cardboard cutouts. There are no stakes; nothing bad is ever allowed to happen to the protagonists (don't bring up that Roe lady who showed up for 5 minutes and then died from ARR). World wars and apocalypses happen and no cities are wiped out or conquered, no main characters killed. The big bad spent an entire expansion lounging around on a chair doing nothing. Don't forget the burning trashfire that is Endwalker's story.

There are genuinely good moments here and there in FFXIV's story, but I cannot in good conscience recommend slogging through a 400 hour long story just for that. If you want an awesome JRPG, there are dozens of other JRPGs that will give you much more bang for your buck within the 20-60 hour range. You'd have to burn through them first and still be really desperate for something for me to recommend touching FF14. That, or you want to play it because it's popular ATM so you can get in on the conversation.

It was a step in the right direction as far as an actual rpg system goes. Tactics is basically tactic ogre but worse.

If he was a job system sperg he probably wouldn't have hated 7 since it's just the job system but a bit more granular and with learning detached from individual characters and onto materia.

but the job spergs don't like how materia is free-form. they need pre-configured and fixed sets of skills. the fact that you can put cure and steal materia on the same character makes them flip their shit.

That's a valid criticism but still FF7 offers more than the typical game for people who like flexible character builds.
The real problem with FF7 is just that it's not balanced very well across the whole game, with some being really powerful (Enemy Skill) while otherwise being rather stingy with materia slots and stat modification for most of the game.

    >perfected the skill/job system with materia
    >allowed you to do stuff so cool/broken it was never put back in (4x cut, final attack->KOTR)
    >balanced so well mastering materia is fun and worthwhile
    >exceptionally creative characters
    >unique story
    >EXTRA characters (2) and hidden materia
    >intimidating bosses
    >genre-redefining music
    >best graphics out at the time; beyond expectation
    >Tifa is a Z cup

    I rest my case

Most of the criticism for VII comes from the garbo spinoffs like Advent Children

never played any ff past X

really all of them are great games except 2 can be pretty rough at points.
The PSX ports of 1 & 2 are the best imo. 4 and 3 remakes are also great but ig they’re not really mainline. 4 remake on DS might be one of my fav JRPGs in general.
really would check out final fantasy 3 maeson (a romhack) if you have never been able to get into the famicom/nes era ff games. it makes the game almost rival dq3 as best 8bit jrpg imo.

Beat VI for the first time as my first FF game, now playing VII. I'm very surprised they're not just generic fantasy shit about crystals, for some reason I had this assumption my whole life. Maybe it's due to my initial low expectations, but these games are incredible, I guess all the hate I saw comes from people who were familiar with them all this time and just hating the thing after all the sequels or spinoffs or whatever, or just for the sheer popularity of it (VII). Feels good to just enjoy shit for once.

      Anonymous

FFV was the last of the games with the classic 4 elemental crystals that maintain the world as a core story element, but 6 and 7 sort of retain that spirit with the Magicite and Materia

        Anonymous

        >FFV
Is that what I need to play if I want more of the FF combat? Because VI was too easy to break and make super trivial.

          Anonymous

The FF games are mostly pretty easy but FFV is a bit harder than 6 and the job system is mechanically a lot more interesting than Magicite, at least it takes more thought and effort to break the game than 6's Twincast 1MP Ultima spam
If you liked 6 you could also try the T-Edition hack which rebalances the game, ups the difficulty and adds some new content, there's also the Brave New World hack which changes the Esper system entirely so only certain characters can equip certain Espers but it also increases the difficulty by a lot

            Anonymous

FFV is not more difficult than FFVI. The only "difficult" fight in FF6 are the tentacles in World of Ruin if you didn't level Sabin or Edgar. Meanwhile the only "difficult" fight in FF5 is omega weapon which is kind of designed to be cheesed with thunder spells.

FF5 combat system is broken just as easily as FF6, by combining a few OP job skills.

              Anonymous

In fact the tentacle boss is harder because by the point you reach Omega Weapon, you have or at least are supposed to have the tools to cheese him.

              Anonymous

FFVI is easier than V. Not like it's a big difference but even though you can break both games, FFV at least you have to know the weak points. FFVI you have to handicap yourself on purpose to generate challenge. The final boss uses single target elemental magic, for frick's sake, in a game that dumps multiple element-absorbing armor in your lap.

In both games I absolutely destroyed the final boss.

And no, the hardest fight in ff6 WoR by far is the storm dragon on mt zozo. At least, not counting gimmick fights that can be annoying like magimaster and wrexsoul.

The optional dragon when you fetch Cyan? Depends when you go there. The difficulty of all the dragons just depend on your play order, really. It was just another dragon to me.

The tentacles were the most difficult to me.

                >In both games I absolutely destroyed the final boss.
                Anecdotes.
I've never found the tentacle boss challenging even when deliberately trying to keep levels low. They have very low damage output you just have to be patient and pay attention to the resistances.
                >Depends when you go there.
Well no fricking shit. Everything depends. Even the tentacle boss (which is easy to beat even with 2 characters at level 20) is totally trivial if you grind a little.

I'm saying that objectively, Storm Dragon is the strongest boss in the game in terms of pure power. He's the highest level Dragon by far (at 74, he's higher level even than the bosses in Kefka's tower including Kefka himself). He has a simple but aggressive script with a mix of strong physical attacks and full-party AoEs, including a non-elemental one (Rage) and an instant-critical (Cyclonic). If you can beat Storm Dragon, you can easily beat anything else that doesn't have a gimmick requiring a particular setup (like MagiMaster).

Plus the game trolls you into fighting Storm first with that bird that flies to Zozo after you recover the Falcon. Meanwhile if you don't know to immediately raid Narshe, the Ice Dragon will always be a pushover by the time you get there.

                >Well no fricking shit
Right, obvious, isn't it? So why are you claiming a completely optional boss is the most difficult when you can beat it at any point of the game? It's far more reasonable to call a boss that may level-trap you more dangerous, one you are forced to fight. I consider this common sense so you really shouldn't say "no fricking shit" when you need to be told these obvious things. It makes you sound like a douchebag.

                Anonymous

The highest level doesn't mean the most difficult. He is very basic and dies in a few turns. Gg.

And if you don't level, your characters may actually be around 12~ at the start of WoR. Here you talk about level 20.

                Anonymous

In other words you have to tie your hand behind your back to see any kind of challenge in FFVI. OP loot is everywhere, xp flows easily, stats are busted, and enemies are easy. FFV at least makes you work for it. XP is harder to come by, OP abilities are more obscure stuff that you wouldn't expect like mix and gptoss. And the game isn't littered with high end gear that makes you immune to major damage categories, including abilities used by the final boss.

Both FFV and FFVI are easy in the same way, with a tiny amount of encounters that require some thought. All Final Fantasy games are easy in general. There's no reason to even differentiate them when any possible differences are so slim.

                Anonymous

                >All Final Fantasy games are easy in general

                >Both FFV and FFVI are easy in the same way
Sure but FFVI is easier if you're going to bother to try to compare them. If the difference doesn't matter to you personally then don't bother trying to make arguments about it. You just wind up saying moronic things.

you're right, but that fight is not mandatory and most people will avoid after 1 game over. the tentacles are the first forced fight that will rape you if you are not ready.

Oh, the V gays are out in force again. Recently finished it and I don't see what's so good about this game? It has some of the worst characters and by far the worst story of any FF I've played, which is really not a good look considering how low the bar is in this franchise. Is it really just job system autism? Is that all you have? It isn't bad, but you gays are overselling it way too hard. It's nowhere near enough to salvage this dumpsterfire of a game. Also:
    >You want to quickly change skills on a character? Uhm, sweaty? I don't think so. I'm gonna UNEQUIP all your stuff now. Also, you're not allowed to run without a certain class/skill. You WILL play THIEF and you WILL like it.
Seizure inducing gameplay. Frick FF5 and everyone who sucks it off.
