The series would've died either way, with or without Van Buren. Nobody in the mainstream cared about isometric RPGs in the 2000s, they were considered a relic of the 90s that was quickly phased out by more console-friendly RPGs like KOTOR and Mass Effect. Interplay had tried to break into the console market with Brotherhood of Steel and it backfired. It wouldn't be until Fallout 3 came around where the franchise would successfully break into the console market and become a household name. Fallout was a popular series in a niche genre of isometric CRPGs. It had a loyal community of fans like those you see on NMA and the RPG codex but it never broke out to be relevant anywhere else in the mainstream consciousness.
The original devs would've likely moved on anyway. Games are made when there's a market for them. If there's no market, there's no game. Sucks to say but if you're selling to the same online circlejerk + a minority of computer nerds you're not really helping yourself. This is the cruel reality.
It worked out well for everyone I think. Without the separation of the original devs from Black Isle we would've never gotten Troika, we've got 2 good games (3 and NV) out of Bethesda's ownership of the series, and Fallout and Obsidian are more popular now than both have ever been. We can talk all day about how well Bethesda have managed the IP but they've done a better job than most would've.

These troons feel accepted for once in their life, as though there are people that understand them, but actually it's just people looking to manipulate them to wage an uphill struggle against a company.
