Honestly the post reads like a thinly veiled attempt to shit on JRPGs while acting all coy by framing it as a question.
But assuming you actually meant what you wrote, you are moronic if you still feel obligated to like JRPGs for some reason despite "never feeling any fun playing them". Doubly so if you can't even tell the difference in designs and gameplay between, say, Persona and Final Fantasy. Accept that they are not for you and move on, stop shitting up the board with low-effort bait threads while you're at it. "Entry-level" is a meme, too, all JRPGs are entry level.

It's so blatant and yet so utterly insenceere in its next line.
It almost begs a reverse thread asking why WRPG & CRPG games have failed to claim a legacy and identity akin to the JRPG field. Though that's bait & shitposting and it'd invite the bethesdawarehomosexuals to argue eternally so frick that shit. They wouldn't even encroach on the capitalist angle.

yeah no one should be coy or veil it, JRPGs really fricking suck and people that enjoy them need to be told they suck over and over until they acknowledge it. and then told some more.

I enjoy their battle systems, their design, their stories and their creators mark.
A lot of JRPGs leave behind a creators mark, a.....soul......if you will....
Memes aside. JRPGs have a legacy here and there, studios that followed another, creators who worked on one title or another.

    > Maybe I need to try out some entry-level ones?
Maybe, maybe not. Maybe you just need to find the right game for you. The right game for you may not be entry level.
Let's take the big daddy of the JRPG scene, FF. There's SIXTEEEN mainline FF games, ONLY FOUR of them have interesting battle systems and one of those is mostly automated. Do you really believe that going in at the weakest point is going to serve you well? Think fool! Even 2 times removed FF spinoffs will engage you more!
I've only enjoyed a few WRPGs & CRPGs, I enjoyed them for their writing and not their gameplay. If I followed their gameplay I would be left with hollow experiences. I am chasing something much more esoteric,

You could be a gigahomosexual who only likes Matsuno games. So the only games you can play are Ogre Batttle, Tactics Ogre, FFT & at an arms length FF XII, and at a double arms length (that's a skill in FFXIV) the expansion scenario save the queen written by Matsuno; a bozja adventure :^).
You can reject all other ivalice entries and deign them not worthy of your praise too.
So long as you identify what you enjoy, be it writing or gameplay.

Search for that, then whenver you ask for recs, be sure to identify what qualities you enjoy in the games you present.
Good day, may I ever find a WRPG that soothes my soul.

Jrpgs tend to be pretty strong on support cast character developement. They also tend to have some pretty unique systems that underly the battle as stated. WRPGs tend to be either three modalities: Bioware, Bethesda, or DnD

Yes. Pick a Final Fantasy from 5 to 10 (prob not 8) and you've seen all there is to see, unless you like edgy aesthetics and dating sims then try Persona 5.
Or, you know, act like you only play cool hidden gems and play absolute garbage.

jrpgs have a lot of subgenres, for example there's moviegames, dungeon crawlers, action rpgss, dragon quests and more. If you've tried out the more common types try playing some more niche stuff like old fire emblem games or something

      >JRPGs what exactly is so good about them?
A long movie with some input from the player involved at times. That's pretty much it.

It's remarkable how well FFX holds up, looks gorgeous. Crazy to think we didn't have voice acting previously. Introduction to the story and world is great. Wakka is endearing, Rikku is hot. Still, it's no wonder turn-based combat got left behind.

Final Fantasy on a CRT, the 2000s nostalgia is off the charts.

    No. Frick off, autismo.
If it's not fun, then it's not fun, period. You drop it and do something better with your time instead.

As for me, it's 75% BOOBA and 25% voice acting.
Also, I love my PSP/Vita a lot, and PPSSPP has an actually working debugger, so what little I can decompile in them is enough for me to make fancy cheats and simple mods. Yes, this is fun in its own right too.

JRPGs, the popular story-based ones, not the nerdy hardcore kind, are enjoyed for the story, world, and characters.
Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, the best way to tell a grand story was with a JRPG, hence it's popularity.
The only other genre which came close was Point and Click adventure games, but those had terrible gameplay, so seemed a lesser way to experience a story and world.

The genre became a bit tropey in the 2000s and beyond, either playing into the anime style and aesthetic to a fault, or being just generic overall.
I guess even the classics are kinda generic in story, it's just that they were revolutionary for their era, games like Final Fantasy 6 and 7, Chrono Trigger, and the like - back then just having strong characters was insane.

If you want an example of non tropey, more unique and compelling examples of what JRPGs can be, honestly RPGmaker games aren't a bad start.
OFF, Earthbound, and Undertale tell very unique and compelling stories in unique and memorable worlds.

I think I only liked OT as much as I did exactly because I was already a pretty big fan of JRPGs in the first place. It's just such a love letter to the genre, it wouldn't have hit nearly as hard otherwise I think.

My issue with JRPGs is that all the characters in them (every single one) do not behave like humans. They behave like an insect attempting to simulate what a human acts like, and accidentally outing itself as an alien creature. JRPG characters never speak like normal people. They never act like normal people. I'd call them a caricature of a human being.

It's possible this is just due to Japanese culture, but no, this is a thing in all asian games.

      Anonymous

They're meant to differ from normal, amplified to be more entertaining, to sort of keep you on your toes. Normal dialogue and scenarios could make the viewer tune out. So you pretty much just play along with it.

real question is why you feel the need to hear subjective opinions counter to your subjective opinion
different people like different stuff for different reasons
just play what you want to play and let others do the same
don't torture yourself with stuff you don't like
don't ask for the best jrpg if you don't like jrpg, even if it were the best jrpg, every other jrpg would then just be downhill from there.

You're not moronic. JRPGs are glorified visual novels and RPGs in name only. That doesn't mean that they're bad, however. They have some of the best music and visuals across all media. The topics explored can also be vastly superior to whatever the decadent West can offer. When I remember something like FFX or Golden Sun my mind is instantly transported into their wonderful and interesting worlds. When I remember Dragon Age or Mass Effect I want to vomit.

There it is. You won't find a better JRPG that defines the genre than Chrono Trigger. You'll likely hate the genre if you force yourself further. I started playing "le quirky earthbound-inspired indie rpgs" becauseGanker wouldn't stop praising them while promising the next one would surely be good and now I hate every single of them and regard their fans as nothing but dysgenic freaks.

JRPG is a shit genre that was a mistake but only gets better the more it deviates from DQ.
Don't even bother with anything "entry-level." Try Atelier, SMT, something else that allows for a lot of customization in general so you're not just going through the motions. Try a borderline DRPG like 7th Dragon, or maybe skip that and just play DRPG (I don't like them but don't think they're bad per se).

I can enjoy relatively standard JRPG myself just fine but won't ever say I'm a fan of the genre. Often the actual gameplay is nothing to write home about, at best. Even when it's action. Or you could say "especially", considering how often the action needs to be tard-wrangled into being at least slightly fun.
