Can you name an RPG that has enough variety and replayablity for at least several playthroughs to feel vastly different?

Can you name an RPG that has enough variety and replayablity for at least several playthroughs to feel vastly different?

I'm not just talking about what weapons/equipment/classes you can use.
Branching routes that completely change what locations you visit and what party members you have.
Maybe your starting options change enough for each playthrough to feel different.
Or maybe the game has a lot of randomly generated variables that impact each playthrough.
I'm not asking for an ultimate game, just want to know what game felt like that for you.

when I replay most of my favorite games I add extra restrictions, and that changes the routes/characters/builds I use. The amount of replayability I get out of a game depends mostly on how much I like it, rather than relying on random variables, branching routes and role playing.

I'll give you a couple of recommendations I think might scratch your itch, although tbh there are not many RPGs out there that completely change depending on the route/playthrough, but there will be variation with these.

    >Starting with Warpigs
Tyranny: Can side with multiple other factions early on that will change the feel of the game going forward.

Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2: You can download mods that give you completely new campaigns, also plenty of official scenarios.

KOTOR 1 and 2: Light or Dark side. You'll get an alignment exclusive companion and a gender exclusive one in KOTOR 2.

MB Warband: How you decide to plan your rise to power is completely up to you. Marauding, becoming a Lord, becoming a kingmaker, just invading a city without pledging allegiance to anyone, it's up to you. The game supports mods that completely overhaul the setting and mechanics(feudal japan, rome, fantasy, vikings), so you can fundamentally change the game in many ways.

Alpha Protocol: Game is kinojank. It most likely has the most reactivity ever done in an RPG, but the game is pure jank. If you can get past it, you will see just how much story reactivity this game has. There are so many choice combos that the endings cannot be all named.

The Witcher 2 is like Alpha Protocol to an extent but with not nearly as much reactivity. Still very much in the same vein.

PoE 2 and Pathfinder: WoTR kinda have this? The games will give you reactivity depending on what faction/mythic path you choose, but it won't completely change the game.

VTmB might be a applicable to an extent, maybe more so if you use the clan quest mod?

You could also try rouge likes

      >Jarpigs
Fire Emblem Three Houses: Every route has a different cast of characters who are your students that you teach. Every route is different and all routes need to be played to get the full picture of the story.

Shin Megami Tensei might also work for you, specifically the Devil Survivor spin offs. Different routes depending on alignment.

Fate/EXTRA let's you pick between 3 servants to play through the game with. Also let's you pick between 2 waifus, so you have 6 different routes if you don't account the MCs gender.

Drakengard and Nier have different routes and endings, but these more so work as extensions to previous routes and endings, each building on the previous events of the endings.

I'm sure there will be some more anons that will add more recs, there are a few more I wanted to recommend but I am blanking out rn. Hope it helped OP.

Growlanser 4 has two distinctly different routes and one route that's a somewhat modified version of another. The opening chapter before the route split is a bit of a pain though.

        >Fire Emblem Three Houses: Every route has a different cast of characters who are your students that you teach. Every route is different and all routes need to be played to get the full picture of the story.
Except that every route reuses the same maps and each time you play through it you need to do the first half of the game again which is almost identical regardless of which house you go with and is a massive fricking slog on repeat playthroughs as a result.

True, but that's just how it is with JRPGs. Most JRPGs are a slog to play through after the first run. Assuming OP cares about the different characters and maybe trying new tactics in the next run, it should hold him over if he plays NG+ in short bursts.

I did, or at least it's more recent sequel. Accidently softlocked myself right before Chapter 2, and was too bored out of my mind to continue from a previous save, so I dropped it altogether. The shield break mechanic is admittedly fun at first, but Squeenix doesn't do anything fun and interesting with it, so it gets stale far too quickly for my tastes.

fire emblem 3 houses is terrible choice, there are not enough units for real diversity and the stupid intermap segments that you pretty much have to do to develop your units are just tedious time wasting chores on replay

it is actually the worst fire emblem game for replayability outside of the story

Good replayability isn't from variaty it comes from a good solid experience that's worth playing again

      needs both honestly

Is it mid, absolutely. Repetitive? Yep. Bad map design? Of course(along with every other FE game.) Is it still within the same vein that OP asked for? It is. Like I said previously, there is not too many RPG experiences like OP wants, besides maybe some sandbox titles here and there.

It's not about being "contractually obligated" to play something, it's about wanting to experience (and beat) a number of games. I suppose it's not that big a deal if you miss some of them, but replaying games always makes me feel like I should be playing something "new" instead.

You're gonna need to check out sandbox RPGs for that kinda shit. Most recent one I've played that has potential is Matchless Kungfu. Every NPC is random each game, you build the world the way you want it large tile by tile by either buying them at a ship or completing objectives in an existing area. The cool thing is the npcs that come with these new tiles are fully independent with their own objectives and over time they will build and expand across the map doing their own thing.

You can play the game however the frick you want, you can ignore the kung fu shit and just larp as some business tycoon, or be a thief, a beggar, a thug, or start your own sect and train your followers and take over territory, fight other sects etc. You can also have a family lineage and pass on techniques to your descendents etc. It's still early access but it has the depth of stat and technique autism that I found sorely missing from Kenshi.

Assuming your a modgay, give me your TOP total conversion mods. I played literally everything translated for fallout 2.

For Skyrim, Wildlander modpack is by far the easiest way to make the game more of a real rpg. It uses requiem, frostfall, alternate starts and a few hundred other mods all curated to work together. It has an in depth magic research system where you can find and study artifacts, practice magic, write spells and figure things out yourself. It's totally viable to be some weirdo that lives in a dungeon for years and through research learns all sorts of OP shit before ever engaging in combat.

Bethesda games are like that for me. I regularly replay them all. I try out different playstyles and restrictions. Maybe do one of the questlines, then end the character's story, and start something new. Avoiding all kinds of minmaxing and metagaming, and just enjoying roleplaying in the world.
Previous playthrough was Oblivion, where I visited the cities, and looked for the best houses to rob. Waited until the sun went down and owners to sleep. Took my time exploring and looking for something worth a couple of drakes. Sold all the crap, and spent the profits on alcohol and a bed at a roadside inn.

Stop replaying games. Replay value is a meme with how oversaturated the video game industry has become. Move onto the next good RPG. Just make sure to enjoy yourself along the way. If that means slow down a bit and don’t rush, then so be it.
