i liked the aesthetics of that game and the added complexity, but i never figured out how to turn a profit, and i always got too focused on getting perfect placements for my farms
it's definitely the hardest in the series. If you can build an efficient economy in this one, you're pretty good at video games. Schönheit ist kein Hexenwerk
Its very swingy, usually you have one block that needs buildings to upgrade, those buildings have a very high upkeep cost. So right before you upgrade you will have profits and after that you will have a time of losses until you make it back through selling new unlocked goods or extra population.
early modern? anno 1800
no i am not paid to make this post, promise
Banished (with CC mod)
Anno 1800
I found CC mod to be bloat because the game can't handle different recipes active in a single building. Having 4 types of meat while interesting means you have to keep switching your smokehouse production mode because as far as the game is concerned those are completely different resources and there are no type tags.
And is 1800 worth getting into now. The base game looks okay but there's a gorrilion DLC and some apparently took game in questionable directions.
>And is 1800 worth getting into now.
always was. try it free on steam this weekend.

Yes, but not for full price, it costs 400 with all DLCs.
buy the basegame on sale and then pirate the dlc.
anno is snooze fest.
Age of Empires
Unironically. I wish I could build roads. Making cities and building castles is really comfier than it should be for a strategy game.
Building bridges should be viable in that game. But then getting them to work in the scenario editor is fricking hard so it'd probably be a shitshow
just add some prefab bridges like Tzard did.
They should have made a spinoff
Did 1503 ever get a fix for ore deposits spawning after loading a save?
anybody?
We need more renaissance/early modern games in general. Kind of an underrated aesthetic compared to your typical feudal-era sword-and-board siege simulator.
Stronghold
unironically tropico
the last one is a bit cucked though

The ANNO series is always great if you want a resource-chains management game disguised as a city-builder.
Other than that, I guess there's City Skylines for modern settings.
If you want a medieval city builder with resource production, and social order and goods distribution mechanics, but also RTS and 4X features, check out Song of Syx.
It's on Steam, GoG and Itch.io.
The Steam and Itch.io versions have Demos that are the full versions of the game, but a few versions back, so you can try it and see if you like it.
